But “PIN” can mean two different things: a PIN entered into a banking app is not the same as your Android lockscreen PIN. Google’s guidance documents credential-theft risks; it does not establish that malware routinely reads or bypasses Android’s lockscreen PIN.
How Android malware can steal bank logins
Google defines phishing as code that impersonates a trustworthy source, asks for authentication credentials or billing information, and sends that information to a third party. It also includes intercepting credentials in transit. Banking credentials are among the examples of common phishing targets in Google’s Play Protect malware-category guidance.
That can mean a fake app or sign-in screen tricks someone into typing in bank details. A malicious app may also abuse access the user has granted: Google identifies extracting credentials as a disallowed use of Android accessibility access. These are distinct routes—deception and abusive app access—and a permission request alone does not prove an app is malicious.
Which PIN is at risk?
Bank-app PIN or code
A banking-app PIN, password, or other credential entered into an app can be exposed to phishing or malicious app behavior. Treat a PIN entered into a suspicious screen as potentially compromised, even if it differs from your phone’s unlock code.

Android lockscreen PIN
The lockscreen PIN protects access to the device; it is not the same as a bank credential. Android’s technical documentation says device PIN, pattern, and password authentication is enforced primarily in a trusted execution environment or secure element using Gatekeeper or Weaver, with attempt rate-limiting. These controls help resist brute-force guessing, but they do not prove that malware can never compromise a device or protect credentials typed into a banking app. See the Android rate-limiting documentation.
Permissions and installations that deserve scrutiny
Google warns that sideloaded apps—those installed from internet sources rather than Google Play—that request SMS, notification-listener, or accessibility access are high risk because these permissions are often abused for financial fraud. Review whether an app has a clear, expected reason to use those capabilities. Accessibility access also supports legitimate assistive and screen-reading tools; the permission by itself is not evidence of malware. Google’s Play Protect warning guidance distinguishes permitted accessibility uses from credential extraction.

- Be wary of APKs prompted by unexpected texts, websites, or file-sharing requests.
- Question requests for SMS, notification access, or accessibility access when they do not fit the app’s purpose.
- Do not install a “cleaner” or security app offered through a pop-up or unsolicited call.
What Play Protect can—and cannot—do
Google Play Protect is Android’s built-in app-scanning protection on devices that support Google Play services. Google describes scanning and responses to harmful apps, but does not promise that every malicious app will be detected. Keep it enabled and take its warnings seriously; it is a protective layer, not a guarantee.
Google’s potentially harmful application guidance, last updated October 31, 2024, describes categories of harmful apps and Play Protect responses: Potentially Harmful Applications (PHAs). Neither that page nor the Play Protect overview establishes how prevalent banking-credential theft is, so the documented risk should not be mistaken for a measured rate of infection.

If you entered bank details into a suspicious screen
- Use a trusted device or the bank’s official app, website, or published phone number—not a link or number supplied by the suspicious screen.
- Change the exposed bank password or PIN and any reused credentials. Ask the bank to review recent activity and follow its instructions for securing the account.
- Review your Android apps and sensitive permissions. Remove an app you do not trust, and heed any Play Protect warning.
- Keep Play Protect enabled and avoid installing replacement “security” or cleanup apps from unsolicited offers.
These are conservative steps; banks’ procedures differ, so follow the bank’s official guidance for your account.
