You can stream kirtan on YouTube with OBS by creating a broadcast in YouTube Studio, sending OBS’s audio and video to it with your stream key, checking the preview, and taking the broadcast live. For a continuous stream, plan separately for the media to keep playing, the computer and internet connection to stay available, music and visual rights, and the fact that a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube.
Before you set up OBS
Make sure the channel can go live
Your YouTube channel must be verified, and it must not have a live-streaming restriction from the preceding 90 days. First-time activation of live streaming can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and confirm access well before your planned launch. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains eligibility and activation.
Decide whether this is a live performance or prerecorded kirtan
For a live performance, the OBS scene needs the appropriate camera and audio inputs. For a prerecorded program, add the media and any visuals you have permission to use. Test the selected source and playback behavior in your installed OBS version; do not assume a media source will restart or loop unattended indefinitely without checking its settings and behavior.
Clear rights for each use
Being devotional, publicly available, credited, or purchased as an audio file does not by itself establish permission to broadcast a recording. Get the necessary rights for the live stream, any rebroadcast, and any audio or video on demand. Google’s Full Live Production Guide addresses content clearance for these uses. If you do not control the necessary rights, choose different material or obtain permission before streaming.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one, then set its title, description, and privacy. YouTube can reuse stream settings; check the selected settings before each broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Get the connection details. In the stream’s encoder or streaming-software settings, copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as a password and address for the stream. Treat it as a credential: do not post or share it, and reset it if you think someone else has accessed it. A custom stream key can be used when you want to reuse a key. Details are in YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- Set up an OBS scene. Add a media source or capture source for prerecorded material, or configure the camera and audio inputs for a live performance. Confirm that the intended sound and picture are present, levels are usable, and only cleared material is included.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, choose YouTube as the streaming service and enter the stream details as prompted, or use the server URL and stream key if configuring the connection manually. Use RTMPS where available. Keep the key private.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then verify that Live Control Room receives the feed and that audio and video look right. Take the broadcast live using the workflow shown for the stream you created. Do a test before relying on the setup for a long-running broadcast.
Choose OBS output settings your connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as a starting point, not a universal preset. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. H.264 is a supported video codec. Its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 frames per second is 14 Mbps; the appropriate bitrate changes with resolution, frame rate, and codec. Check the current YouTube recommended encoder settings for the resolution and format you intend to send.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate that match the source and that your upload connection can maintain.
- Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed the four-second maximum.
- Test with representative audio and motion, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators before treating the configuration as ready.
A high setting is not automatically a better setting if the connection cannot sustain it. OBS is free and open-source; its dropped-frames help explains that rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to the service or a bitrate the connection cannot support. For a baseline configuration, OBS also provides an Auto-Configuration Wizard.

Plan for a genuine 24/7 operation
With OBS running locally, the stream depends on the host computer, power, network, encoder, and media source continuing to work. Decide who will monitor the broadcast and how you will respond if playback stops, the computer restarts, the internet drops, or YouTube reports a problem. A UPS may bridge some local power interruptions, but it does not protect against a network, hardware, encoder, or platform failure. If you record locally, allow enough storage for the bitrate and retention period you choose.
A single continuous YouTube broadcast is not a dependable way to create one complete 24/7 archive. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured and recommends a local archive backup. If you need distinct YouTube archives, plan shorter broadcasts; if you need a full copy, make and check a local recording or separately upload the content. Confirm rights for those recordings and uploads as well. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream archives.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live broadcast. | The channel is not eligible, live streaming has not finished activating, or a restriction blocks access. | Verify the channel, check Live Control Room access and channel restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed. | The wrong server URL or stream key is in use, or the encoder has not started sending. | Compare OBS’s connection details with the current stream in Live Control Room, start the encoder, and check the YouTube preview. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| The stream drops frames or looks unstable. | The upload connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. | Use OBS’s dropped-frame guidance, test the connection, and lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the feed is stable. Recheck stream health. |
| Audio or video is missing, wrong, or stops playing. | The scene may use the wrong input, the source may not be playing, or its restart behavior may not match the intended loop. | Inspect the active OBS scene and source, test the complete media sequence, and confirm audio and video in the YouTube preview before going live. |
| A long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive. | Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. | Use shorter broadcasts if you need separate platform archives, or keep a local recording and verify that it saved correctly. |
| A rights claim or interruption affects the stream. | The channel may lack permission for music or visuals, or YouTube may identify material through its rights systems. | Use only content cleared for the intended live and on-demand uses. Do not treat a lack of an immediate match as proof of permission. |
YouTube’s live Content ID matching is a rights-management feature for eligible Content Manager partners, not a creator’s license-checking shortcut. Its documentation describes eligibility requirements, including global rights and exclusive ownership for that matching use, and possible actions such as warnings, replacement of the stream, or termination. It does not grant a creator permission to use music. See YouTube’s live Content ID documentation.

If you want prerecorded kirtan to keep playing without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The service plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera, and you still need the rights to stream your material. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
