To keep a prerecorded music stream running, handle three different failures separately: loop the file when it reaches its end, use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer to attempt recovery after a temporary output failure, and use an external process supervisor if FFmpeg exits. The FIFO approach is a recovery attempt, not a guarantee that YouTube will preserve one uninterrupted viewer session.
What can stop an FFmpeg music stream?
A looping input and a reconnecting output solve different problems. Identify which layer failed before changing options:
| Failure | What to use | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| The music file reaches its end | Loop the input with -stream_loop -1 and read it at real-time pace with -re. |
It does not restore a failed network connection. |
| The publishing connection temporarily fails | Use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery options on the output. | Recovery may fail, and YouTube viewer or event continuity is not assured. |
| The FFmpeg process exits | Use an operating-system process supervisor to restart it, then test that behavior. | A new process is not guaranteed to attach to the same uninterrupted YouTube session. |
Why -reconnect 1 is not the general RTMP fix
FFmpeg documents the -reconnect option family in its HTTP protocol options for input connections. Those flags do not promise to re-establish an RTMP publishing output to YouTube. For output recovery, the relevant documented starting point is the FIFO muxer. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation and FFmpeg Formats Documentation: FIFO muxer.
Build an illustrative looping command
This shell example loops a local MP3, generates a black 720p video background, encodes the streams, and applies FIFO output recovery. It is an illustrative starting point assembled from FFmpeg’s documented FIFO recovery pattern and YouTube’s encoder workflow; it has not been executed or tested. Check the exact options and behavior against your installed FFmpeg build and your media file before using it for a real broadcast.

Replace the ingest placeholders safely
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the current stream URL and stream key and use the URL format shown for your encoder. The key is a credential that allows YouTube to accept your feed, so treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or log you share. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Check the generated video and stream mapping
The example maps the generated video from input 1 and the MP3 audio from input 0. If you use a different visual input, change the mapping deliberately. The generated video must continue for as long as the audio output is intended to run. Because the sample uses -shortest, verify how the output behaves with your exact file and FFmpeg build; do not assume that a finite visual input will keep pace with an indefinitely looped audio input.

Understand the recovery flags
-f fifo -fifo_format flv selects FIFO output using FLV formatting. -attempt_recovery 1 enables recovery attempts after a temporary failure, and -recovery_wait_time 1 sets the wait between attempts to one second in this documented pattern. That interval is not a promise that a dropped connection will be restored within one second, or at all. Confirm these muxer options in the documentation for your installed release.
Match encoding settings to YouTube
Choose protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for the stream configuration in Live Control Room and your available upload connection. YouTube currently documents RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its settings guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The example’s -g 60 produces a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, or two seconds between keyframes. If you change the frame rate, revisit the GOP value rather than copying it unchanged. The sample sets AAC audio to 128 kb/s; check YouTube’s current recommendations and your own stream requirements before treating that as the right setting for every broadcast.
Configure and test YouTube recovery behavior
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy the current stream URL and stream key into FFmpeg’s output URL in the format provided for your stream.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. Check the settings for the target stream in YouTube Studio. YouTube says these allow starting or stopping from the encoder; reused stream settings also copy the auto-start and auto-stop selections. Test how those settings affect what viewers see after a reconnect. See Manage live stream settings.
- Run an unlisted or private test. Preview the feed in Live Control Room and inspect stream health before relying on the setup for a public broadcast.
- Test the failure you need to recover from. Check a temporary output interruption separately from a deliberate FFmpeg process stop. If the process exits, verify that your supervisor restarts the command and observe whether YouTube accepts the new publishing session.
- Check the watch page and media quality. Confirm that the intended event is visible and that audio and video are behaving as expected. YouTube recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring stream health in its live streaming tips.
If a third-party encoder reports a startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises copying the current stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Troubleshoot common reconnect problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The music stops at the end of the track. | The input is not being looped. | Use -stream_loop -1 for the file input and -re for real-time reading. Confirm that the output is not ending because another input ends first. |
| The file loops, but YouTube still loses the feed. | Input looping does not repair an output connection. | Check that FIFO output recovery options are applied to the publishing output and review FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation for your installed release. |
Adding -reconnect 1 did not restore publishing. |
The HTTP reconnect option family is for HTTP inputs, not a general RTMP output recovery mechanism. | Use the FIFO muxer recovery pattern for the output instead; do not assume HTTP input options re-establish an RTMP session. |
| FFmpeg stops instead of recovering. | The process may have exited rather than experiencing a temporary recoverable output failure. | Inspect the FFmpeg error output and test an operating-system supervisor that restarts the command. A process restart does not guarantee the same YouTube event remains continuous. |
| YouTube rejects the encoder at startup. | The stream key may be stale or incorrect. | Copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. |
| Video or audio is missing or ends unexpectedly. | Input selection, stream mapping, or input duration may not match the command. | Check the input order and explicit -map options. Verify that generated video remains available for the intended duration and test the exact command with the actual media. |
Plan for long broadcasts and content rights
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer broadcast, check the current Live Control Room behavior rather than assuming one event can run indefinitely; the archive statement is documented in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Automatic reconnect does not grant rights to the music. Use music and visuals you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules before broadcasting. A stream can reconnect technically while still facing a rights claim or other YouTube enforcement.
