If FFmpeg skips, jumps over, or glitches between videos in a YouTube live stream, first identify the playlist format and inspect the files and FFmpeg log at the affected transition. With FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, every input must have matching streams—including codecs and time bases—and inaccurate file durations can put later timestamps in the wrong place. If the files are incompatible, use a workflow that re-encodes them instead of assuming stream copy will make them compatible.
Start by identifying the playlist and the failure
“Playlist” can refer to different inputs, and the fix depends on which one your command uses. A concat-demuxer script is a text file listing media files for FFmpeg to read in sequence; an HLS/M3U8 playlist is a different input. Do not apply concat-demuxer assumptions to every playlist type.
- Identify the input. Check the FFmpeg command and the file it reads. Determine whether it uses the concat demuxer, an HLS/M3U8 URL or playlist, or another format.
- Capture the exact command and log. Keep the output around the point where the video is skipped or jumps. Compare the script’s listed order with the files FFmpeg says it opens and processes.
- Pinpoint the transition. Note which file plays before the problem, which should play next, and whether FFmpeg itself reports an error or an unexpected duration at that point.
There is no reliable one-line fix without the command, playlist, FFmpeg version, media metadata, and relevant log lines. These details determine whether the issue is file compatibility, duration/timestamp handling, or stream delivery.
Check concat-demuxer compatibility and durations
The concat demuxer expects the listed files to have the same streams, including the same codecs and time bases. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps across files, and the duration assigned to each file affects where the next file starts. Incorrect duration information—whether from an inaccurate estimate or a truncated file—can therefore create artifacts at a boundary or shift the timing of subsequent material. - Inspect each listed file’s streams, codecs, time bases, and reported duration. For example, run
ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format input.mp4on each file, replacinginput.mp4with its actual filename. - Compare the results across the files, especially the file before and after the skip. Look for missing or additional streams, different codecs or time bases, and durations that do not match the media you expect to play.
- Check the concat script’s paths and file order against the log. Confirm that a file is not absent, listed twice, or being opened under an unexpected path.
- If the streams are compatible, correct any demonstrably wrong playlist or duration information and test the transition again. Avoid adding loop or timestamp flags at random: they do not make incompatible streams compatible.

Choose the concat method that matches your files

FFmpeg’s FAQ on joining video files distinguishes these approaches. Stream copy avoids re-encoding but does not normalize heterogeneous inputs. If the files differ in stream layout or properties, normalize them to compatible streams or use the concat filter and re-encode.

If FFmpeg reaches the next file but YouTube playback still breaks
If the log shows FFmpeg processing the transition as expected, investigate the outbound stream rather than changing the playlist blindly. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health in Live Control Room, reviewing encoder messages and output, checking a local archive, and testing outbound connection strength when needed. Its live-streaming troubleshooting guidance is a useful diagnostic path.
- Compare local output with the live stream. If a local archive also freezes or jumps at the boundary, focus on FFmpeg, the input files, and encoding. If it is clean but viewers see a problem, inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and the connection to YouTube.
- Check the encoder output. Confirm it uses RTMP or RTMPS and supported video and audio codecs, and that the encoder is actually sending the expected output through the transition.
- Check connection capacity. Test outbound connection strength if YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient feed; do not assume a file-boundary artifact is a network problem, or vice versa.
Verify YouTube encoder settings
Use settings appropriate for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, ingestion codec, and available upload capacity. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. The recommended bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the applicable value from YouTube’s current table rather than copying a generic bitrate.

- Set the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate to the intended stream format.
- Use CBR and set keyframes every two seconds where possible; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, then ensure the outbound connection can sustain it.
