To recover a YouTube lofi stream automatically, set up three separate safeguards: OBS automatic reconnect for a dropped connection, an operating-system process supervisor to relaunch OBS if it exits, and YouTube Live Control Room’s auto-start setting so a returning encoder feed can start the broadcast. Each handles a different failure; OBS reconnect alone cannot restart a crashed OBS process.
Identify which part failed
“The stream crashed” can describe three different failures. The right recovery depends on whether OBS is still running, whether it can reach YouTube, and whether YouTube is set to start the broadcast when the feed returns.

For a hands-off setup, configure the recovery layer that matches each failure you want to handle. A supervisor can also be defeated by a host shutdown, a missing desktop session, or a bad launch configuration, so test the full path before relying on it.
Configure YouTube and OBS for connection recovery
1. Verify the YouTube stream and keep its key private
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the intended stream.
- Verify that the stream key shown there is the one configured in OBS. YouTube describes the key as the credential and destination information that allows an encoder to send the feed; treat it as private. [YouTube encoder setup help]
- Check the stream’s auto-start setting. If you want YouTube to start the broadcast when encoder video begins, make sure auto-start is enabled for that stream.
2. Enable OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, check the streaming output’s automatic reconnect option and its retry settings. OBS documents reconnect retries for supported output interruptions and says the retry interval doubles on each retry. OBS labels and the exact location of output settings can vary by version and configuration. Confirm the setting in the OBS version installed on the stream host rather than assuming it is enabled.
Make OBS relaunch after it exits
OBS’s reconnect feature cannot act once OBS has closed. To recover from an unexpected process exit, configure an operating-system process supervisor or watchdog to launch OBS again. The exact instructions depend on whether the host uses Windows, macOS, or Linux and whether OBS normally runs in an interactive desktop session; there is no single platform-independent command that is safe to apply to every setup.

- Configure the supervisor to relaunch OBS after an unexpected exit, not merely after a network disconnect.
- Ensure it launches under the correct user and desktop session, with access to the intended OBS profile, scene collection, and stream configuration.
- Check how the supervisor handles an existing OBS instance so it does not create duplicate processes.
- If the host itself may reboot, configure and test recovery after reboot separately. A process supervisor running only inside an unavailable session cannot bring that session back by itself.
- Test with the real channel and stream configuration before leaving the lofi stream unattended.
Because the operating system and launch environment determine the supervisor setup, use the supervisor’s documentation for the specific host rather than copying a command intended for another platform.
Check the broadcast after OBS returns
When the supervisor relaunches OBS, YouTube must receive the feed and the selected broadcast must be configured to start as intended. If OBS is running but YouTube receives no video, recheck the current stream key in Live Control Room, update OBS if the key has changed, and start the encoder again. [YouTube encoder setup help]

If you reuse a YouTube stream’s settings, verify its auto-start and auto-stop selections. YouTube says reusing a stream carries those selections along with its metadata, settings, and stream key, so an older choice can persist. [YouTube encoder setup help]
Troubleshoot a lofi stream that does not recover

Keep the lofi stream safe and within YouTube’s limits
Automatic recovery only restores the encoder and broadcast; it does not grant rights to the music or visuals in a lofi video. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright requirements before leaving a continuous stream running. If you use a reused stream configuration, also verify its settings as described above.

YouTube’s live-streaming help page lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are platform limits, not a measure of recovery reliability. [YouTube live streaming help]
