If a YouTube loop stream plays videos in the wrong order, inspect the exact concat script FFmpeg opens: the concat demuxer processes its file entries in sequence. YouTube’s ingest settings do not choose that order. Check the list before changing bitrate or encoder settings.
Check the playlist FFmpeg actually reads
- Find the concat script named in your FFmpeg command. Open that exact file, not just the playlist or source folder you intended a script generator to use.
- Read every
fileentry from top to bottom. Put the paths in the desired playback sequence and check for duplicates, missing entries, or unexpected files. - If a script is generated, inspect its output. A generator’s sorting rule may produce an order different from the one you expect. Sort filenames explicitly or change the generator’s rule, then verify the resulting script.
- Check the paths. Confirm each file exists and that relative paths resolve from the process’s working directory.
For example, this list specifies opening.mp4, then main.mp4, then closing.mp4:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'opening.mp4'
file 'main.mp4'
file 'closing.mp4'
This illustrates the documented list format; it is not a complete FFmpeg command and does not guarantee that arbitrary files can be concatenated by stream-copying.
Validate the concat script format
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer recognizes the optional ffconcat version 1.0 header only when it is exactly at the start of the first line, with no byte-order mark or other leading characters. Use one directive per line. If you omit the header, check that the script is still being read as intended rather than assuming a malformed header is harmless. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Distinguish order from looping and transition problems
The sequence is right once, but does not repeat
List order and looping are separate behaviors. FFmpeg documents a concat demuxer loop option that is disabled by default. Check whether your command applies the intended loop option to the concat input, and whether playback reaches the end of the listed entries before you diagnose an ordering problem. Confirm the installed FFmpeg version and the placement of input options in your command; the correct invocation depends on how you run FFmpeg.
The order is right, but a transition glitches or stalls
The concat demuxer expects corresponding streams in the files to match, including codecs and time bases. It uses each file’s duration to position timestamps in the next file; inaccurate stored durations can cause artifacts. Check the media’s stream compatibility and duration metadata. The concat script’s duration directive can override a file’s stored duration when needed. These checks address timing and transitions, not the order of the entries. FFmpeg documents these requirements and options in its concat demuxer reference.

Choose a concatenation method that fits your media
Changing concatenation methods does not by itself fix a wrongly ordered list. Choose based on whether your inputs are compatible and whether re-encoding is acceptable:
| Method | When it fits | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Files have matching stream characteristics and file-level concatenation is unsuitable. | Reads listed inputs in sequence without re-encoding when compatibility requirements are met. |
| Concat filter | You need to re-encode, including when inputs need processing to make a continuous output. | Requires a filter-based workflow; it is not a playlist-order shortcut. |
| Concat protocol | The media format supports file-level concatenation. | Use only when the format allows files to be joined this way. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ on joining video files explains the distinctions. Check the documentation for the method you choose and the properties of your actual inputs.

Keep YouTube ingest settings separate from playlist order
FFmpeg determines the order in which it reads the local concat list. YouTube’s ingest settings affect delivery and stream health, not that order. Once the playlist is correct, verify the stream URL and key in YouTube Live Control Room and compare your encoder settings with YouTube’s current live encoder settings.
- YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as streaming protocols, and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its video codec options.
- YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the current table on YouTube’s settings page for your target instead of applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health. For encrypted ingest, YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents its setup separately at Set up an encoder for live streaming.
YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending. That detail can matter when planning a long-running broadcast, but it does not change playlist order; consult the current live stream setup instructions for the applicable setup details.

Troubleshoot the symptom
| What you see | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Videos play in a consistent but unexpected order | The script entries or generated list are in a different order than intended. | Inspect the exact script FFmpeg opens, correct its file lines or generator sorting rule, and verify the output list. |
| A video is missing or appears twice | An omitted or duplicate entry in the actual script, or an unexpected generator result. | Compare every script line with the intended playlist and source paths. |
| Playback ends instead of repeating | The concat demuxer’s loop option is disabled by default or is not applied as intended. | Check the loop option, its placement in the command, and whether the input reaches the end of the list. |
| Audio or video jumps at a file boundary | Input streams may not match, or a file’s stored duration may be inaccurate. | Check codecs, time bases, and duration metadata; consider a duration directive or a concat method suited to the inputs. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health issue | Protocol, stream URL or key, codec, frame rate, keyframes, or bitrate may not match the current encoder guidance. | Verify the URL and key in Live Control Room and check YouTube’s current settings. Do not change these expecting them to reorder the concat list. |
