To change the video in an encoder-based 24/7 YouTube stream, change the active source or scene in the encoder that is sending the broadcast—not in YouTube Studio. If you are away from that encoder, you can use remote access to its computer, but the setup and whether a switch interrupts the stream depend on your equipment and configuration. Test the workflow before relying on it unattended.
Where the video change happens
An encoder-based stream sends video to YouTube from streaming software on a computer or from a standalone hardware encoder. The encoder is configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key; the key is a credential, so keep it private and out of screenshots or instructions shared with others. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the connection and broadcast workflow.
Live Control Room is for the YouTube-side workflow, including previewing the incoming stream, going live, monitoring, and ending the broadcast. It is not documented as a control for selecting a video file in the active encoder feed. The content change must be made at the encoder.
Prepare the replacement video in OBS
OBS builds its output from scenes and sources. A scene can contain sources such as a video file; OBS calls this a Media Source. You can prepare the replacement clip or a scene containing it before you switch to it. OBS also documents VLC video playlists as an option when VLC is installed. See the OBS Sources Guide for its scene, source, and visibility controls.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open the scene used for the stream. In OBS, identify the scene currently supplying the broadcast and review its sources.
- Add or prepare the replacement. Add a Media Source for the video file, or prepare a VLC playlist if VLC is installed. Set up and check the source before making it active.
- Switch the output. Make the replacement source or its scene visible/active using the controls in your OBS layout. Confirm the intended clip is playing in OBS’s output preview. The precise switching behavior depends on your configuration.
- Check audio and the YouTube feed. Confirm picture and sound at the encoder, then check the YouTube live preview or player to make sure the expected output is arriving.
Make the switch when you are away
If OBS is running on a computer at another location, remote access to that computer is one possible way to reach the encoder controls. This is a system-level operating choice, not a YouTube feature or an OBS remote-access setup described in the cited guides. Choose and secure your own method; keep the stream key private, and do not assume that a remote session will remain connected or that changing sources will be seamless.
Before depending on remote changes during an unattended stream, test the complete sequence: connect remotely, select the prepared source or scene, verify picture and audio in OBS, and verify the incoming feed in YouTube. The cited documentation does not guarantee gapless switching or continuous operation during a source change.

Keep source switching separate from broadcast controls
Changing an OBS source changes what the encoder sends. It is different from starting or ending the YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s encoder workflow says to wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room and select Go live to begin the broadcast. To end it, YouTube instructs creators to select End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder. Do not end the broadcast just to change the video source.
Choose a control approach that fits the setup
| Approach | What it changes | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder such as OBS | Scenes and sources determine the outgoing content. | Prepare the replacement source or scene and verify the actual output after switching. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | The hardware encoder supplies the stream to YouTube. | Use the controls available for that device; OBS source instructions do not apply to every hardware encoder. |
| Manual source or scene switch | The operator selects the prepared content in the encoder. | Requires access to the encoder controls at switch time; interruption behavior is configuration-dependent. |
| Prepared playlist | A playlist can supply a sequence of video items where supported; OBS documents a VLC playlist when VLC is installed. | Set up and test the playlist in the actual encoder configuration. The cited guides do not establish automated remote playlist management. |
| Remote access to the encoder host | Lets an operator reach the encoder computer from elsewhere, if their chosen access setup allows it. | The YouTube and OBS guides do not endorse a particular remote-access tool or establish its security, reliability, or continuity. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want an uploaded video to keep looping without leaving an encoder computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera.
