Start with the exact stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room, then match it to FFmpeg’s connection log and output settings. A timeout or “no data” points first to the ingest URL, protocol, stream key, or VPS network path; a stream that arrives but is flagged for incorrect settings needs a targeted check of codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, or audio. There is no single fix for every rejection.
1. Capture the error before changing the command
Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the complete message shown next to stream health. YouTube reports distinct issues for audio, video, bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, and stream configuration, so the category matters. Its health-status documentation groups issues by those same areas: YouTube Live API stream health status.
Also save the FFmpeg output around connection setup and output initialization. Redact the stream key before sharing logs, command lines, or screenshots: it is a credential that lets someone publish to your stream.
2. Check the ingest URL, protocol, and stream key
- Compare the destination with Live Control Room. Use the server URL and stream key currently displayed for the scheduled stream. Treat them as separate fields when assembling the destination, and check for a copied character, missing separator, or stale key.
- Match protocol to endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH are supported ingest options, but they have different capabilities and are not interchangeable in every workflow. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and live ingest guidance and ingestion protocol comparison.
- For a conventional FLV push, confirm FFmpeg is using the intended RTMP-family destination. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation gives this general publishing shape:
ffmpeg -re -i input -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. It is an illustration, not a verified YouTube command; replace the example destination and ensure the endpoint, key, codec, and output options match your stream. See FFmpeg protocol documentation.
A protocol mismatch can appear as a timeout rather than a clear rejection. Google’s RTMPS guide notes that cleartext RTMP sent to a YouTube server expecting RTMPS can time out without a useful response: YouTube RTMPS guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Match media settings to the health warning
Read FFmpeg’s output stream summary and compare it with the specific warning in Live Control Room. YouTube’s current encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). Use the bitrate range for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one number as universal. The page does not state a publication year.

For H.264, YouTube’s current page gives these examples:

| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |

| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or deliver them reliably. The full table includes other resolutions and separate recommendations for AV1 and HEVC; consult the current YouTube encoder settings for your exact combination.
Keyframe interval and GOP
YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If Live Control Room reports a GOP or keyframe problem, check the encoder’s actual interval and whether it is producing an open GOP. YouTube’s health guidance says its ingest does not support open GOP. The option syntax for configuring a closed GOP depends on the FFmpeg encoder and build; use the documentation for the encoder selected in your output summary rather than copying a flag meant for another encoder.

Audio format
If the warning concerns audio, confirm that output audio is AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround; 5.1 over RTMP or RTMPS is supported only with AAC. See the YouTube encoder settings.
4. Separate VPS connectivity problems from media problems
If YouTube reports no incoming data or FFmpeg times out
- Recheck the endpoint, protocol, and key against Live Control Room.
- Check that the VPS can reach the destination host and port for the selected protocol. A provider’s firewall, egress policy, DNS, or routing could matter, but the error alone does not establish which one is responsible.
- If the connection appears to reach YouTube but hangs without a useful response, verify that the endpoint expects RTMPS and that FFmpeg is not sending cleartext RTMP to it.
When asking a VPS provider for help, give its region, the destination host and port, the protocol, and the connection error. Remove the key and any other secrets.

If YouTube receives data but flags invalid settings
Use the reported health category to focus on the relevant output property: video codec, CBR bitrate, frame rate, resolution, keyframes, or audio. Changing unrelated retry flags or upgrading VPS hardware is not a reasoned first step when YouTube is already receiving the stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Retest one change at a time
- Make one change tied to the observed error, such as correcting the protocol or adjusting the keyframe interval.
- Start a test stream before the planned broadcast. YouTube recommends testing audio and representative movement, then monitoring stream health during the event.
- Record whether the health state changed and retain the matching FFmpeg log excerpt with credentials removed.
Changing several unrelated settings at once makes it harder to identify what fixed the issue. YouTube’s health indicator and message list are the key feedback; see its live streaming encoder guidance.
