These tools automate playback and OBS actions; they do not make a computer, power supply, or internet connection fail-proof, or guarantee that YouTube will remain live unattended. YouTube Studio scheduling is a separate step from starting the encoder.
Choose the right OBS tool for the job

For a playlist-only stream, start with VLC Video rather than adding a plugin. Advanced Scene Switcher is useful when a stream needs timed scene changes or other automated actions; it is not a media playlist and does not itself keep the stream online.
Build a looping playlist in OBS
- Install VLC with matching architecture. Install VLC separately from OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC so the VLC Video source can use it.
- Add the source. In the desired OBS scene, add a VLC Video source, then open its properties.
- Populate the playlist. Add the video files in the order you want. Choose loop for continuous repetition; choose shuffle if you want the order randomized.
- Check playback before going live. Confirm the video appears in the scene and that the playlist advances and repeats as intended. Check audio levels and the scene’s framing as well.
- Keep the scene active. Make sure the scene with the playlist is the one sent to the stream. A playlist source controls playback, not YouTube’s live state.
If you only need one file to repeat, OBS’s built-in Media Source has a loop option. VLC Video is the built-in route documented for playlists.
Install and configure Advanced Scene Switcher
Advanced Scene Switcher adds automation through macros: conditions determine when an action should occur. The OBS Forums resource currently lists version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, and a minimum requirement of OBS Studio 31.1.1. Because plugin and OBS compatibility can change, check the resource’s current requirements and release notes before installing: Advanced Scene Switcher on OBS Forums.

- Confirm compatibility. Check your installed OBS Studio version against the plugin’s current minimum and release notes.
- Install the plugin using its current instructions. Restart OBS if the installation instructions require it, then confirm the plugin is available in OBS.
- Create a macro for the task. Add a condition, such as a timer or a relevant scene, source, or streaming state, and pair it with the action you want OBS to perform.
- Test each trigger while not relying on it for an unattended broadcast. Verify that the condition becomes true when expected and that the action targets the intended scene or source. A missed condition or an unexpected state can prevent a macro from doing what you intended.
- Save and validate the full sequence. Run the playlist and automation together through at least one complete transition before using them on a live channel. The plugin’s feature list does not establish that a particular macro recipe will survive every crash or outage.
The plugin author describes it as allowing users to “automate various tasks using ‘Macros’.” That is the right way to think about it: it automates OBS tasks, while the encoder, computer, network, and YouTube broadcast remain separate parts of the workflow.
Connect OBS to a scheduled YouTube broadcast
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Scheduling the broadcast in YouTube Studio does not, by itself, schedule OBS to launch or start encoding. In YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow, the creator connects the encoder, waits for the preview, and clicks Go live in Live Control Room.

- Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and follow YouTube’s current flow to create a stream or schedule one.
- Copy the connection details. Use YouTube’s server URL and stream key in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Start OBS streaming. Confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed and displays a preview.
- Complete YouTube’s live step. For the scheduled workflow, wait for the preview and click Go live in Live Control Room. Do not assume that a scheduled event starts OBS for you.
- Monitor the actual broadcast. Check the YouTube live status and OBS connection rather than treating a running playlist or an enabled macro as proof that viewers can watch.

Plan for YouTube archives and content rights
Archive length
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a complete automatic archive for a continuous stream that runs longer than 12 hours; check YouTube’s current guidance and make a separate recording or archiving plan if retaining the full program matters.

Copyright and reused content
Automation does not grant rights to the videos, music, or other material in a playlist. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights and permissions for the content and understand YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. Repeating content around the clock does not make it original or exempt from those policies.
What a local OBS setup can and cannot automate
- It can: repeat a file, play a VLC playlist, and trigger configured OBS actions when macro conditions are met.
- It still depends on: the computer staying on, OBS continuing to run, a working network connection, and the encoder staying connected to YouTube.
- It does not establish: automatic recovery from a power failure, PC or OBS crash, internet outage, or a YouTube disconnect. YouTube’s scheduled-event workflow also includes a manual Go live step.
The plugin and platform documentation describe controls and setup, not comparative uptime or a tested recipe guaranteed to run continuously. Validate your own scenes, playlist, macros, and broadcast flow before relying on them.
