Measure upload speed where you will stream, reserve about 20% as headroom, and set the encoder below the remaining capacity. If even that feed is unreliable, upload your videos first and let a cloud service send the ongoing stream instead.
Measure upload speed, not download speed
Upload speed is the capacity your connection has for sending data to YouTube. Download speed does not tell you whether your connection can sustain a live broadcast. Run a speed test at the place and time you expect to stream, ideally more than once, and pay attention to the upload result and how much it varies.
YouTube advises leaving about 20% of available upload bandwidth unused. Its guidance is that “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” In practice, choose a bitrate below the capacity left after that reserve—and lower still if your upload speed fluctuates or other people and devices share the connection. Example: turn a speed-test result into a bitrate ceiling
If a test shows a stable 4 Mbps upload, 20% headroom leaves about 3.2 Mbps for the total stream bitrate. That is a ceiling to work under, not a guarantee of smooth streaming: shared use or a dip in capacity can still cause interruptions. Audio also contributes to the total bitrate, so do not set video bitrate equal to the entire allowance.

Choose an encoder setting your connection can sustain
YouTube lists 3 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for both 480p at 30 fps and 360p at 30 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not a promise that any connection rated at 3 Mbps will stream reliably. Leave the recommended bandwidth reserve, account for audio and network variation, and use a lower bitrate if needed. YouTube’s current encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Start with a lower resolution, such as 360p or 480p, if your upload capacity is limited.
- Choose 30 fps rather than a higher frame rate when the video does not need smoother motion.
- Set the video bitrate below the capacity available after headroom and audio are accounted for.
- Test the stream with representative movement and audio; a static test image may not reveal issues that appear in the actual playlist.
Do not treat a faster router or an Ethernet cable as a fix for inadequate ISP upload capacity. They may help with local Wi-Fi instability, but the available outbound capacity still sets the limit. Measure the connection and fit the stream bitrate to what it can sustain.

Set up a local 24/7 stream with an encoder
A local encoder can send a prerecorded playlist as a live broadcast, but it requires a computer and a stable internet connection to remain on throughout the stream. YouTube supports encoder workflows using RTMP or RTMPS; its guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use a compatible encoder and follow YouTube’s current protocol and settings guidance.
- Check channel eligibility. Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live activation can take at least 24 hours, so do not wait until launch day to enable it.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream creation flow and choose the encoder option. Follow the prompts to create or schedule the stream. YouTube’s walkthrough is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream details into your encoder. Copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Configure the output. Choose H.264 and a resolution, frame rate and bitrate your measured upload can support. Keep total bitrate within the capacity available after the headroom reserve; include audio in that total. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports YouTube’s recommended secure workflow.
- Start a private test and inspect it in YouTube Studio. Check the preview and stream health, then run the playlist long enough to observe the real connection and content. If health warnings or buffering appear, lower the bitrate or resolution, reduce competing upload traffic, or use a more stable connection.
- Start the public broadcast only after the test is sound. Keep the computer and connection running, and monitor the encoder and YouTube Studio for interruptions.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a reliable way to create a complete replay. If you need an archive, consider planned sessions shorter than 12 hours and/or a separate local recording, and check YouTube’s current controls before relying on either approach. Choose between local delivery, cloud delivery and a regular playlist

Gyre describes a workflow of uploading prerecorded videos to its storage, building a looping playlist, scheduling it and streaming from its cloud infrastructure. Its site lists a seven-day trial and paid plans; these are vendor-displayed terms checked on 3 October 2026 and may change. Or let it run in the cloud
If a low home upload cannot reliably carry a continuous feed, a cloud service can send the broadcast after the source videos have been uploaded. The initial transfer still needs bandwidth and time; the difference is that the ongoing stream no longer depends on your home connection.

- Stream health shows buffering or an unstable connection: The bitrate may be too close to the connection’s available upload capacity, or capacity may be fluctuating. Lower video bitrate or resolution, restore the bandwidth reserve, and test at the actual streaming location.
- The encoder will not connect: Check that the stream URL and stream key match the broadcast in YouTube Studio and that the encoder is using a protocol YouTube supports. If you exposed the key, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Confirm channel verification and check for live-streaming restrictions within the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take at least 24 hours.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Plan shorter sessions if an archive matters, and do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete replay.
- Source uploads take too long for a cloud loop: Cloud delivery removes the need for a continuous home feed, not the initial upload. Estimate transfer time and confirm the service’s storage and upload requirements before scheduling.
Check copyright and permissions before going live
A prerecorded playlist still needs rights to the video and audio it contains. Confirm that you own or have permission to use the material, including music, before broadcasting. YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips are a useful starting point for reviewing live-stream requirements. A continuous stream does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast content.
