A 12-hour YouTube live stream is not automatically ended under the official guidance. The often-cited 12-hour threshold concerns whether YouTube archives the stream and whether viewers can use DVR controls—not a universal broadcast cutoff. If your live event actually stopped, check whether your encoder is still sending content and inspect its status, logs, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and any local recording.
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance actually means
YouTube Help distinguishes the live broadcast from its recording and viewer controls. Its archive guidance says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Its encoder guidance says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” These statements describe archive capture; they do not say that YouTube ends every broadcast at 12 hours.
DVR is a separate issue: YouTube says rewind and pause capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That affects viewers’ ability to move back through a live stream, not whether the broadcast itself must stop.
So first identify what ended: the live event, the replay being saved, or the ability to rewind while the stream is live. A missing archive or unavailable rewind is not, by itself, evidence that the broadcast was terminated.

How to narrow down why the broadcast stopped
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe a feed sent to the YouTube Live server using a server URL and stream key. Ending a stream involves stopping content from the encoder. If the event itself ended, check the sending side before assuming the 12-hour archive rule caused it.
- Check the watch page. Determine whether YouTube says the live event ended, or whether the issue is only that no replay appeared or viewers cannot rewind.
- Check the encoder. Confirm it is still running and sending content to the YouTube Live server URL with the current stream key. Look at its status and logs for an interruption or stopped output.
- Check Live Control Room. Look at the preview and stream status. YouTube recommends monitoring accessibility and audio/video quality; the preview can help you see whether a feed is reaching YouTube.
- Check a local recording, if you have one. See whether it continues to grow. If it stops at the same time, that is useful diagnostic evidence about the recording setup, but it does not by itself identify the cause of the stream ending.
- Record what you find. Note the event status, encoder logs, preview behavior, and local recording. These checks help locate the failure point, but the official guidance does not establish the cause of a particular incident from those symptoms alone.
Protect long streams and check account limits separately
Keep an independent archive
For a run longer than 12 hours, keep a separate local recording and verify that it is growing. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a YouTube replay should not be your only copy. YouTube’s live-streaming tips also recommend checking local archive growth.

Check restrictions and concurrent streams when starting another broadcast
YouTube’s current Help guidance lists a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. It also notes that live-stream restrictions can affect access. These limits may matter if you cannot start a new stream; they do not establish a 12-hour duration limit or explain why an already-running broadcast ended.
Can a different encoder prevent the stream from ending?
YouTube describes both software and standalone hardware encoders, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. It does not say that buying a hardware encoder prevents stream termination or bypasses the archive threshold. Choose equipment for your production needs, not as a guaranteed fix for this symptom.
