How to Prevent OBS from Dropping Frames on a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To prevent OBS from dropping frames on a 24/7 YouTube stream, first identify whether the problem is the internet connection or local encoding/rendering overload. For connection drops, use stable wired internet, choose a bitrate your sustained upload can support with headroom, and match YouTube’s live ingest settings. For local overload, reduce GPU and scene workload. No single setting guarantees a continuous stream, so test and monitor stream health.

Diagnose what is actually dropping

OBS dropped frames: check the connection

OBS uses “dropped frames” for frames it cannot deliver because its connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. OBS says it is “extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames,” and OBS sends directly from your computer to the streaming service rather than through an OBS-operated relay server. (OBS stream connection troubleshooting; OBS FAQ.)

Watch OBS’s dropped-frame count and connection status while checking YouTube’s stream health. Note when the count rises and whether YouTube reports an issue. A speed test can help estimate upload capacity, but one result does not prove that the route will remain stable throughout a day-long broadcast.

“Encoding overloaded” or locally choppy output: check the computer

Encoding and rendering overload are different from network drops. OBS attributes failure to keep up with rendering or encoding to GPU overload or a bottleneck between the GPU and the rest of the system. If the output is locally choppy or OBS reports “encoding overloaded” without a rising network dropped-frame count, investigate the computer’s workload rather than lowering network bitrate first. Viewers buffering while OBS counters look normal

Do not assume viewer buffering means OBS is dropping frames. Playback can vary by viewer device, location, and internet connection. If your sending-side counters are normal, check YouTube stream health and consider whether a lower bitrate would make playback more accessible to viewers. (OBS guide to buffering and viewer-side issues.)

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

Use the stable upload capacity of the connection that will actually run the stream—not just the advertised plan speed or a single best-case test. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. YouTube separately recommends keeping 20% of available upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. These are setup heuristics, not guarantees; shared household or workplace traffic and route instability can still cause drops. Retest with other users and devices active if that reflects normal conditions. (OBS connection guidance; YouTube streaming network tips.)

For example, YouTube’s currently retrieved live ingest table lists these H.264 values. They are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that your connection can sustain them:

Live ingest format Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

The same YouTube table gives 1080p30 values of 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, and 1080p60 values of 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended for those codecs. Use YouTube’s complete live encoder table for other resolutions, frame rates, or codec combinations; do not substitute upload-video encoding recommendations for live ingest values. Match YouTube’s live encoder requirements

In OBS, use settings compatible with YouTube Live and the stream key and ingest details shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; supports up to 60 fps; recommends CBR; and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. The precise encoder options available depend on your OBS version and hardware encoder. (YouTube live encoder settings.)

  • Rate control: CBR for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: no more than 60 fps under the cited YouTube guidance; choose a rate your system and connection can sustain.
  • Bitrate: choose the YouTube live table value for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then make sure the actual connection has sufficient headroom.

Before committing to a 24/7 broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the intended program and monitor YouTube’s stream health messages. A static test may not expose the same encoding or bandwidth demands as representative motion. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewer devices and networks, so increasing the source settings beyond what your connection can deliver is not a substitute for a stable feed. Make OBS’s connection more reliable

Start with Ethernet and isolate the path

OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Its troubleshooting guide identifies the Ethernet cable, network card, router or modem, switches, and extenders as possible fault points. Test the current link and components one at a time before buying replacement hardware; a cable cannot fix ISP congestion, a distant ingest-route problem, or local encoding overload. OBS’s guide specifically says, “It’s recommended to use a wired connection when streaming.” (OBS, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, dated 2024-09-30.)

Try connection diagnostics only when drops point to the network

  • Try another YouTube stream server if OBS offers one, and lower bitrate as a diagnostic. Testing another streaming service can help establish whether the issue appears service-specific; it is a comparison test, not a fix for a weak connection.
  • On Windows, try OBS’s Network Optimizations and TCP pacing options. OBS says some users report improvement; the options also add troubleshooting detail to logs.
  • Leave Bind to IP at Default. Try IPv4 Only only as a diagnostic; if it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
  • Dynamic Bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion instead of dropping frames, but OBS labels it beta and warns that it does not fix the root cause and can reduce stream quality.

Security software, VPNs, bundled network-prioritization utilities such as Lenovo Vantage or Killer NIC, and outdated network drivers can also interfere. Change one likely cause at a time. If temporarily disabling security software is necessary for diagnosis, restore protection afterward. Get network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer. If local checks do not resolve the problem, contact your ISP before assuming which component needs replacement. (OBS connection troubleshooting.)

Reduce rendering or encoding load when the evidence points to it

When OBS reports overload or local output stutters without network drops, try targeted changes one at a time so you can tell what helped. OBS recommends these performance remedies: (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.)

  • Close other GPU-heavy programs. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator in cases of GPU overload.
  • If a game is running, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, and reduce its graphics settings to free GPU capacity.
  • Lower OBS output resolution or frame rate if necessary. This can reduce rendering and encoding work, though it also changes the delivered stream quality or motion smoothness.
  • Simplify costly scenes: high-resolution capture media, complex filters, numerous or large browser sources, and oversized scene collections can add workload.

Do not replace the computer simply because the stream is dropping frames. A rising network counter calls for connection diagnosis; local overload calls for workload reduction. Change hardware only after evidence points to a specific component limitation or fault.

Plan for a 24/7 stream, not just a successful launch

A longer broadcast has more time to encounter intermittent network, power, computer, software, or service problems. The OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a universal uptime target, restart schedule, failover design, or guarantee for continuous operation. A practical operating routine is therefore to test representative content before launch, monitor OBS and YouTube stream health during operation, and investigate incidents at the network, software, hardware, and ISP layers rather than assuming one setting can prevent every failure.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a pre-recorded YouTube stream to continue without leaving your home computer on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud.
