To play music between videos in an OBS 24/7 stream, use a separate music or interstitial scene and switch to it between video scenes. Add a Media Source for one looping track or a VLC Video Source for a playlist. OBS does not automatically insert music between clips, so the scene change and playback behavior must be set up and tested.
Choose the setup that matches how you want music to play
| Choice | Best for | Relevant controls | Dependency or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One music file or a single track that repeats | Loop; Restart playback when source becomes active; Close file when inactive | Does not provide the multi-file playlist controls documented for VLC Video Source. OBS Project documentation |
| VLC Video Source | A sequence of tracks, played in order or shuffled | Loop Playlist; Shuffle Playlist; visibility behavior | VLC must be installed. Match its 64-bit or 32-bit version to OBS. OBS Project documentation |
Use a separate interstitial scene if music should play only in the gaps. If music should continue underneath the videos, put the music source in a scene with the video and set its volume against the video audio. Whether a source continues seamlessly across different scenes depends on where it is placed and how its visibility behavior is configured; test your own scene collection.
Add one looping music track with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene where the track should play. In the Sources box, click + and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- In the source properties, enable Local File and browse to the music file. OBS documents support for common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV, as well as common video formats. OBS Project documentation
- Enable Loop if the track should repeat when it ends. Set Restart playback when source becomes active according to whether you want playback to start from the beginning whenever the source becomes active.
- Adjust the source volume in the OBS audio mixer and listen to the scene. If music shares the scene with video, balance it so it does not overpower speech or other important audio.
For a track that should play only between clips, keep this source in the interstitial scene. OBS documents the source controls; the separate-scene arrangement is a practical way to build the behavior, not an automatic “insert music between clips” feature.
Build a playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video Source. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Project documentation
- Select the scene for the music, click + in Sources, and choose VLC Video Source.
- In the source properties, add the files to the playlist in the order you want them to play. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the playlist; use Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized order.
- Set the VLC source’s visibility behavior for your scene design. Depending on the selected behavior, playback can stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue while the source is hidden. Choose deliberately if the source is used across scenes. OBS Project documentation
- Preview the playlist and listen through its end and loop point before using it unattended. OBS documents playlist and loop controls but does not promise gapless transitions between tracks.
Arrange scenes so music plays between videos
A reliable basic layout is one scene for video playback and another for the music interstitial. Switch scenes when a video ends, and switch back when the interstitial is over. This is an implementation pattern using OBS scenes and sources; OBS does not automatically detect the end of one video and insert a music scene.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Create or choose a video scene containing the video source or sources.
- Create a separate music scene and add either the looping Media Source or VLC playlist.
- Choose a transition in OBS and test switching from video to music and back. Check whether music restarts, resumes, or keeps playing as intended when its source becomes active or hidden.
- Run through a complete test cycle, including playlist looping and the scene switches you expect to use. Check audio levels and confirm that the intended source remains active at each point.
If music should sit underneath videos instead, keep both the music and video sources active in the same scene and set their relative volumes. Test any cross-scene arrangement rather than assuming playback will continue seamlessly.
Check music rights before leaving the stream running
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If detected material remains in a stream, YouTube may interrupt or terminate it. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: for licensed third-party content, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube also says creators must hold the rights needed for their livestream, including music rights. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and its livestream terms and conditions.

- Confirm that your permission covers live streaming, the platforms and territories where you broadcast, and monetization if applicable.
- If you retain an archive or VOD, confirm that the license also covers that recording.
- Do not assume a track is safe because it is labeled “free.” YouTube advises checking third-party music licenses; its safe music tips include the YouTube Audio Library as an option to investigate for YouTube use, but that does not establish suitability for every use or platform.
Troubleshoot common playback problems
- The VLC Video Source option is missing: Install VLC, then check that its bitness matches OBS. The OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. OBS Project documentation
- The track starts over when you return to the scene: Check Restart playback when source becomes active for a Media Source, or the VLC source’s visibility behavior. Choose restart or resume based on the result you want.
- The playlist stops after its last file: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled in the VLC Video Source properties.
- Music plays over the videos when it should not: Keep the music source in the interstitial scene rather than in a scene that remains active during video playback; check scene transitions and source visibility.
- There is a gap between playlist tracks: OBS’s documented VLC playlist controls do not guarantee gapless playback. Test the actual files and loop point; do not assume adjacent tracks will transition without a pause.
- The live stream is interrupted after music plays: Check YouTube’s copyright notifications and confirm that the license covers livestreaming and any archive. If you licensed third-party material, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube copyright guidance
