To add a video to an always-on YouTube stream, change the video or playlist in the encoder that is sending the live feed. YouTube Studio manages the live event and supplies the stream URL and key; it does not edit the encoder’s video playlist. If you want an upcoming listing viewers can find and get reminders for, create a separate scheduled event instead.
First decide whether to change the current stream or schedule another
“Adding a video” can mean changing the program viewers see now, or setting up a separate live event. Those are different actions: the encoder supplies the live picture and sound, while YouTube Studio manages the event, its details, and its connection to the encoder.
| Choose | When it fits | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Update the current encoder feed | You want viewers to keep watching the existing event while the program changes. | Whether the current encoder can change sources without interrupting its feed depends on that software and version. Check its controls and test the change before relying on it live. |
| Create a new scheduled event | You want a separate upcoming listing that you can promote in advance. | YouTube lets you schedule a stream, reuse previous stream settings, and let viewers set reminders. The new event has its own watch-page and continuity considerations. |
YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how to connect a feed and manage a live event, but it does not establish one universal method for changing a playlist while live. Do not assume that switching a source preserves the same watch page or uninterrupted viewing in every encoder setup.
How to add a video to the encoder feed
The exact import, playlist, ordering, and transition controls depend on your encoder. The steps below describe the workflow without assuming a particular app’s menus.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Prepare the video. Confirm that the file is available to the encoder and that its audio and picture are what you intend viewers to receive. If you use a playlist, decide where the new item belongs and whether it should play immediately or after the current item.
- Open the active encoder program. Select the new video source or add the file to the encoder’s playlist using that application’s controls. Check the encoder’s help for the exact steps for your software and version; YouTube Studio does not provide those app-specific instructions.
- Keep the existing YouTube connection if it is still appropriate. YouTube’s documented connection flow is to create or select a stream in Studio, copy its stream URL and key into the encoder, then start the encoder feed. A source change inside the encoder normally concerns the program being sent, not the YouTube event setup. If the current event or connection should change, verify the Studio settings before going live.
- Preview before making the change live. Check the Live Control Room preview and verify that the event is accessible from its watch page. Test representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health and picture and sound after the change.
- Make the source change using the encoder’s live controls. Follow the app’s instructions for switching or queueing a source. Avoid stopping the encoder or ending the YouTube event unless that is the outcome you want; the precise continuity behavior is encoder-specific.
Protect the stream key and check the connection
A stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send a feed to your YouTube stream. Keep it private. YouTube supports custom reusable keys and reuse of previous stream settings. If you believe a key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in the encoder before reconnecting.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, for encoder delivery.
- Use a bitrate appropriate to your connection and encoder output. YouTube’s guidance does not supply one universal bitrate for every resolution, frame rate, and connection.
- Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube’s guidance says not to exceed four seconds.
- Test before a planned event and watch the Live Control Room’s stream-health information rather than assuming a successful encoder preview means YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
For planned events, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees of a successful stream.

When a new video should be a new live event
Schedule a separate event when you need an upcoming listing, advance promotion, or a distinct event identity rather than simply changing the current program. YouTube allows creators to reuse previous stream settings, which can reduce setup work. Check the event details and watch page for the new event, and make sure the encoder is pointed at its intended stream URL and key before starting.
If your priority is continuity for people already watching, changing the existing encoder feed may be more appropriate—but verify how your encoder handles live source changes. YouTube’s general connection instructions do not promise that every app’s switch will behave identically.

Archive and ingestion limits to know
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single uninterrupted always-on broadcast, or its archive, will continue indefinitely. If the archive matters, plan the event duration and confirm the resulting recording after the stream.
YouTube also supports HLS ingestion for certain needs, including HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. HLS sends segments and has higher latency than RTMP; YouTube’s HLS guidance includes a rolling playlist requirement with no more than five outstanding segments. HLS is an encoder-ingestion method, not a YouTube Studio editor for uploaded video playlists. Use it only when your encoder and streaming requirements call for it.

Troubleshooting a video change
- The new video does not appear in the preview: Confirm that the encoder selected the intended source or playlist entry and that the file is available to the application. Check the encoder’s own source status and documentation; YouTube Studio cannot correct an encoder playlist selection.
- The preview works, but viewers see a problem: Check the Live Control Room for stream health and verify the public watch page. Inspect the outgoing audio and motion, and confirm that the encoder is still sending the intended feed.
- The encoder cannot reconnect: Confirm that it has the correct stream URL and key for the selected Studio event. If the key may have been compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
- The stream is choppy or delayed: Check the encoder’s output bitrate against the available connection and verify the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. HLS may add latency compared with RTMP because it sends segments.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: Check the event’s duration and archive after the stream. YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours; it is not a promise of an indefinite archive for an always-on broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating an encoder on a computer at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera or stream to platforms other than YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on.
- Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; it is one free day per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
