For a reliable YouTube Live baseline in OBS, use H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps, and RTMPS. Start at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps if your encoder and sustained upload can support it; if not, test 720p30 at 6 Mbps. Those are YouTube’s published recommendations, not India-specific guarantees: your connection to YouTube ingest and your computer’s encoder determine what will hold steadily.

There is an important catch for any 24/7 setup: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, record locally and verify the recording rather than relying on YouTube’s archive.

Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live

Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as a starting point, then test them on the exact connection and hardware you will use. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not measurements of Indian ISPs or a promise that a particular connection will sustain them.

OBS or stream setting Starting point Context
Service and protocol YouTube RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. YouTube encoder settings.
Video encoder H.264 A broadly compatible baseline. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; availability depends on encoder and hardware support. YouTube encoder settings.
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate for the listed YouTube encoder settings. YouTube encoder settings.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube encoder settings.
1080p, 30 fps, H.264 10 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum Use this when your upload and encoder can sustain it. YouTube encoder settings.
1080p, 60 fps, H.264 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum The higher frame rate has a substantially higher recommended bitrate than 1080p30. YouTube encoder settings.
720p, 30 fps, H.264 6 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum A lower-bandwidth option to evaluate if 1080p is unstable. YouTube encoder settings.
Audio AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. YouTube encoder settings.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit Use the SDR guidance unless your production intentionally uses a supported HDR workflow. YouTube encoder settings.

Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate for your connection

There is no special India-only bitrate in YouTube’s published encoder table. A speed-test result is useful, but the important question is whether the connection can sustain the upload to YouTube ingest during the stream. Congestion, other people or devices sharing the connection, routing, and encoder capacity can all affect that.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use 1080p30 when the setup has headroom

For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30. Select it only if the computer can encode continuously and your real upload performance can carry the stream reliably. The published 5 Mbps minimum is not a recommendation to choose that bitrate for every kind of video.

Step down when stability matters more than detail

If 1080p30 drops frames, test 720p30 at YouTube’s recommended 6 Mbps. For mostly still scenes, ambience, devotional music, or a talk format, 30 fps and a lower output resolution may be a more practical reliability choice than 60 fps. Fast motion and gameplay can benefit more from 60 fps, but YouTube’s H.264 recommendation rises to 17 Mbps for 1080p60.

YouTube transcodes live feeds into viewer formats, so the ingest resolution and bitrate you send are not necessarily the only rendition viewers can select. YouTube encoder settings.

Keep upload headroom

OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting heuristic when diagnosing connection limits; it is not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of stable streaming. OBS connection troubleshooting. Treat the YouTube bitrate table as a target to test, not proof that your measured maximum upload can sustain a stream. Where practical, use wired Ethernet: OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming.

Set up OBS and YouTube before going live

  1. Check channel eligibility. Confirm the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance covers eligibility and setup: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  2. Create or schedule the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Select the encoder workflow and obtain the stream key there. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
  3. Configure OBS for the target. In OBS, open Settings → Output and select the streaming encoder and CBR rate control; set the bitrate that matches the resolution and frame rate you intend to test. In Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in the encoder’s streaming settings. In Settings → Audio, use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps where those controls are available for your chosen encoder.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service and connect the account or enter the server and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Use RTMPS when the selected workflow offers it.
  5. Run a representative test. Make an unlisted or private test with audio and motion like the intended program. YouTube specifically advises testing with comparable audio and movement. Check OBS statistics and the Live Control Room preview and health messages before you make the stream public. YouTube encoder settings; YouTube live-streaming guidance.
  6. Verify local recording. If you need a backup replay, start local recording and check that the file is growing and playable before relying on it. Do not assume a long YouTube broadcast will be archived.
  7. Monitor the live session. Watch OBS statistics and YouTube stream health, along with audio and video quality. If network frames drop, reduce the bitrate and investigate the connection rather than treating dynamic bitrate adjustment as a fix for the underlying problem.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, record locally and verify that file. A continuous 24/7 broadcast also means you should not build an archive plan around one uninterrupted session. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

YouTube’s operational guidance also describes testing backup-encoder rollover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. If you configure failover, test the handover before depending on it. YouTube live encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot common OBS streaming problems

OBS reports dropped frames

Dropped frames indicate a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Reduce bitrate, test the wired connection, and check possible fault points such as the network cable, router, network card, or other network equipment. OBS recommends wired Ethernet and notes that dynamic bitrate can reduce quality without resolving the cause. OBS connection troubleshooting.

The stream disconnects or the preview does not appear

  • Confirm the stream key and selected YouTube service in OBS match the current event in YouTube Studio.
  • Check the Live Control Room for health messages and whether the stream is waiting for an encoder signal.
  • Check that the channel remains eligible for live streaming and that the network can reach YouTube ingest consistently.
  • If using backup encoding, test failover rather than assuming it will switch correctly.

Video looks soft, blocky or jerky

  • For blockiness, check whether the selected bitrate is adequate for the motion and output resolution; if upload is constrained, reduce resolution or frame rate and test again.
  • For jerky video or dropped frames, check both network statistics and whether the encoder can sustain the selected output.
  • For mostly static content, compare a 30 fps setup with 60 fps; the latter requires a higher recommended bitrate at 1080p.

The stream is live but the replay is missing

Check session length first. A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so use a local recording if the replay is important. YouTube archive guidance.

Keep an OBS stream running 24/7—or run it in the cloud

OBS is a do-it-yourself option when you can keep the streaming computer, network connection, encoder and local recording setup running and monitored. A configured scene and stable bitrate do not guarantee uninterrupted service: power, hardware, software or connection failures can still stop a stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.

  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
  • Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same features are included on every plan; only billing length changes.
  • Billing options: Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year.
