OBS scene transitions control how your live output changes between scenes; they do not schedule videos or keep a 24/7 playlist running. To use OBS for a prerecorded YouTube stream, configure transitions for the visual changes you want, set up a separate video-playback workflow, and keep OBS and its encoder feed connected for as long as the stream runs.
What OBS transitions do—and what they do not do
OBS includes Fade and Cut transitions from first launch. You can choose the active transition and set its duration; Swipe, Slide, Fade to color and Luma Wipe are also available to add. A transition changes the program when you switch scenes. It does not start the next video file, create a playlist, or schedule a scene change by itself.
For an unattended prerecorded stream, plan two separate jobs: a playout source or workflow that continuously supplies video and audio, and an encoder that sends that feed to YouTube. OBS can serve as the local encoder, but the computer running it must remain available and connected throughout its role in the stream.
Set up a scene transition in OBS
- Choose the scene change you need. In OBS, use the Scene Transitions controls to select an available transition such as Fade or Cut. Add another transition from the transition controls if you want an effect such as Swipe, Slide, Fade to color or Luma Wipe.
- Set its duration. Adjust the transition duration in the Scene Transitions controls. A cut changes immediately; a fade or other animated transition takes the configured time. Choose a duration that suits the material and check the result in a test before relying on it.
- Switch scenes deliberately. A normal scene switch applies the active transition. If you need different transition behavior for a particular switch, use OBS Quick Transitions and configure the desired effect and duration there.
- Preview safely with Studio Mode. Turn on Studio Mode to separate the editable preview from the live program. Prepare or adjust the next scene in preview, then use Transition or a configured Quick Transition to send it to the live output. You can also assign hotkeys for transitions if you operate OBS from the keyboard.
- Check both picture and sound. Confirm the incoming scene has the intended sources and that audio does not disappear, double up, or change unexpectedly during the switch.
Keep prerecorded playback and the YouTube feed running
Scene transitions are only the presentation layer. For a continuous stream, the video source or playlist must keep playing, and an encoder must keep sending the resulting feed to YouTube. Do not assume that a scene transition will sequence prerecorded files or restart playback; configure those functions separately in the media source or playout workflow you choose.

- Enable live streaming and create or schedule the stream. Use YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube notes that first-time live activation may take time, so do not leave setup until the moment you intend to go live. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Connect the encoder. In YouTube’s stream settings, use the stream URL and the stream key in OBS or another encoder. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube lists OBS as an encoder and Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded video in its encoder information.
- Configure playback independently. Add or configure the source that supplies your prerecorded video and audio, and verify its looping or sequencing behavior in the relevant tool. Check what happens at the end of a file, on a missing file, and after a source restart; do not infer playlist behavior from the OBS transition setting.
- Test the complete path. Run a representative test with movement and audio like the intended stream. Confirm the encoder connects, the right scene reaches program, playback continues, and YouTube reports healthy stream input. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; see its live encoder settings and stream-health guidance.
Encoder settings and stream-key safety
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS. For RTMP or RTMPS, it lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate; use the bitrate table in YouTube’s encoder settings guide rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream.
- Choose resolution and frame rate that match your source and available upload connection.
- Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends; do not exceed four seconds for the listed RTMP/RTMPS settings.
- Use the stream URL and private key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not publish the key or include it in screenshots or public instructions.
- Test with actual representative audio and motion, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast. A successful connection alone does not establish that video, sound and bitrate are behaving as intended.
Rights and YouTube policy checks
Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Only stream recordings, music, images and other material you have the right to broadcast, including any relevant licenses or permissions. The fact that a video can be played in OBS does not establish that its contents are cleared for a live broadcast. Repeated or prerecorded format alone is not a guarantee of policy compliance or monetization; check the applicable rules for your content and channel. Operating locally: what must stay available
With local OBS playout, the computer running OBS and the encoder needs to remain powered, online and able to send the feed for the duration of its role. The operator is responsible for the local playback setup, encoder connection and monitoring. If the computer, application or internet connection stops supplying the feed, YouTube may lose the incoming stream. Test the whole workflow rather than relying only on a transition preview.
For a physical operator control, Elgato documents Stream Deck actions for OBS scene selection, Studio Mode, preview-to-program and transition effect or duration control. It is optional hardware for manually operating OBS, not a substitute for the playback source, encoder connection or an unattended continuous-pl streaming setup. Check compatibility for the specific device and software before purchase.
