To loop a prerecorded video on a YouTube live stream, set up an encoder such as OBS: add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop, then send OBS to YouTube Live using your stream key. For several clips, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. YouTube’s own Loop control repeats playback for a viewer; it does not create a live broadcast.
Choose the right kind of loop
| What you want to do | Use this | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video in a live broadcast | OBS Media Source with Loop enabled | Plays the selected file again when it reaches the end. OBS describes the setting in its Media Sources documentation. |
| Play several clips in a repeating sequence | OBS VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled | Plays a configured playlist repeatedly. VLC must be installed for this source to appear; OBS recommends 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Media Sources documentation. |
| Repeat an available video while watching | YouTube’s viewer-side Loop control | Repeats playback for you; it does not send a live feed from an encoder. See YouTube’s instructions for looping videos. |
Before you start: check YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube’s setup guidance says your channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. It also documents simultaneous-stream limits of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; both limits apply. These are YouTube Help limits and guidance accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that every account or stream is eligible. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming setup instructions if your channel’s status or the interface differs.
Set up a single repeating video in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose an existing scene or create one for the broadcast.
- Add the video. In the Sources area, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name, then select the local video file in the source properties. OBS lists common supported media types, but support is not universal across every codec or file.
- Enable the loop. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS defines this setting as playing the file again after playback completes.
- Check the scene. Confirm that the video is visible in the OBS canvas and that any intended audio is present. A loop setting tells OBS to replay the file; it does not promise a perfectly seamless join between the end and beginning.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or manage the stream, and connect OBS as the encoder. Enter the stream key in OBS’s streaming settings, or use YouTube’s offered encoder connection flow. YouTube describes the stream key as the key/password and address information the encoder uses to send a feed for YouTube to accept; keep it private. An owner or manager can reset it if it is compromised. See YouTube’s instructions for creating and managing a live stream and stream-key guidance.
- Review before sharing. Start the encoder and check both the OBS output and YouTube Live Control Room preview, including audio. Share the watch link only after the preview looks and sounds right.
Loop a playlist of multiple clips
- Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC so the source is available.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source from the Sources + menu.
- Configure its playlist with the clips you want played in sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties, then check the order and preview before connecting or sharing the YouTube broadcast.
The VLC source is the more suitable choice when the broadcast should rotate through multiple files. For one file, a Media Source has fewer dependencies. Refer to OBS’s Media Sources guide for its source properties and supported media types.
Copyright and channel rules still apply to a loop
Looping a file does not change the rights or policy obligations attached to its contents. YouTube’s official livestream terms state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” They also require the creator to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another copyrighted live broadcast. It may replace a matching stream with a placeholder, temporarily interrupt it, or terminate it if the material remains. If you have licensed material, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent an interruption if that allowlisting has not happened. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
If YouTube has restricted your channel from livestreaming, its guidance says you may not use another channel to stream while the restriction remains. Trying to get around the restriction can result in termination. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and check that Loop is enabled. For a sequence, confirm that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, as OBS specifies for this source.
- The file will not play or has no sound: Confirm that the selected file is the intended one and that its type is among the media types OBS supports. OBS’s documentation does not establish that every codec or file will work. Check the source’s visibility and audio in OBS, then check the YouTube preview.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Recheck that the correct stream is selected in Live Control Room and that OBS has the corresponding stream key. Treat the key like a password; if it may have been exposed, reset it through an owner or manager account.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced: Look for warnings in YouTube Studio. A third-party-content match may trigger a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Resolve the rights issue and, for licensed content, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting.
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and any live-stream restriction status before changing encoders or keys. YouTube says restrictions cannot be bypassed by streaming through another channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
With OBS, the video is sent from your own computer. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live, so no computer, OBS session, or home connection has to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly option is $9.99 per month.
