To improve Wi-Fi, first move your router to a central, elevated, open spot, then compare performance near the router with the weak area. This no-cost diagnosis helps distinguish a coverage problem from slow internet service, device limits, interference, or network congestion before you buy equipment.
How to improve your Wi-Fi speeds: diagnose the problem first
Wi-Fi performance depends on more than signal bars. Distance and barriers can weaken the wireless link, while an older device, many active devices, the chosen frequency band, or a slow or faulty internet connection can also limit results. Google’s speed and performance troubleshooting guidance recommends considering these factors together.
- Identify the pattern. Note whether the problem affects one room, the whole home, one device, or mainly a particular time of day.
- Compare locations. Run a speed test near the router and again in the problem area, ideally with the same device. If your router or ISP provides a separate internet speed test, use it to help check the connection beyond Wi-Fi.
- Compare devices. If only one device is slow, its age, Wi-Fi capability, or settings may be the limiting factor. A newer router cannot give an older client support for newer Wi-Fi standards.
- Check the service connection. If several devices are slow even near the router, the issue may be the internet connection, service plan, or ISP—not the wireless signal. Contact the ISP if tests are below the expectation for your service.
Speed-test results vary with test method and conditions, so use comparisons to locate the likely bottleneck rather than expecting one test to explain everything.
Where to place your Wi-Fi devices
Start with the router or primary Wi-Fi point. Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi speed guidance recommends a central, elevated, open location. A router tucked inside a cabinet, placed on the floor, or surrounded by walls and objects can have a harder time reaching devices around the home.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Move the router toward the center of the home rather than leaving it at one far edge.
- Raise it off the floor, for example on a shelf.
- Keep it out of cabinets and away from nearby obstructions; leave its sides and top clear.
After moving it, test again in the weak location. If performance improves when you temporarily bring the affected device closer to the router, distance or barriers are plausible contributors. Walls and building materials make each home different, so test placement rather than assuming one spot will work everywhere.

Nearby electronics and wireless interference
Nearby electronics can contribute to wireless interference. Google’s wireless interference troubleshooting advice includes enabling channel auto-switching where available and, when practical, moving, unplugging, or disabling nearby electronics to see whether performance changes. Make one change at a time and retest; results depend on the home and its devices.

Busy networks and device capability
Many active devices can compete for network capacity, especially when several are streaming, downloading, or on calls at once. If a slowdown appears at particular times, compare results when fewer devices are active. A single older phone or computer may also perform worse than newer devices on the same network.
2.4 GHz and 5 GHz: range versus speed
The FCC describes 5 GHz Wi-Fi as faster but shorter-range than 2.4 GHz. That is a trade-off, not a universal rule that one band is always best: a nearby device may benefit from 5 GHz, while a more distant device or one separated by obstacles may get a more usable connection on 2.4 GHz. The FCC’s Household Broadband Guide explains this frequency-band difference.

When to add a mesh point or Wi-Fi extender
If a weak area remains after improving placement, added coverage equipment may help—but only if it receives a reliable signal from the router or another mesh point. Adding hardware in the wrong location can extend a weak connection rather than fix it.
| Option | Best fit | Placement and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh Wi-Fi system or point | Broader coverage across multiple rooms or persistent dead zones. | Place points in the open where they can maintain a strong connection to each other. Google’s guidance for its own systems suggests points about one to two rooms apart; this is Google-specific guidance, not a universal spacing rule for all brands. Models may have compatibility limits. |
| Wi-Fi range extender | A smaller, localized coverage gap where an extender is compatible with the existing router. | Position it where it still receives a usable signal from the router—not at the far edge of the dead zone. A strong link from the extender to a nearby device does not compensate for a weak upstream link. |
Google explains coverage and compatibility considerations for its products in What is Google Wifi? Its mesh test guide covers checking connections between points. For extender placement, see Google Fiber’s work-from-home setup guidance. Those instructions are product-specific; follow the placement and compatibility guidance for the system you own.

Use Ethernet for stationary devices
If a desktop computer, TV, or game console stays in one place and running a cable is practical, connect it to the router with Ethernet. The FCC’s consumer guidance says a direct Ethernet connection provides the highest speeds for that wired device and can alleviate Wi-Fi congestion. It does not improve wireless coverage in other rooms, so it is a targeted fix rather than a whole-home Wi-Fi solution.
Choose the next step based on what the tests show
- One weak room, better results near the router: improve router placement first; if the gap persists, consider a properly positioned extender or mesh point.
- Several rooms have weak coverage: a mesh system may better suit a broader coverage problem, provided its points can maintain reliable links.
- One device is slow while others work well: investigate that device’s capabilities and connection before changing the whole network.
- Everything is slow, including near the router: check the internet connection and contact the ISP if the service is underperforming.
- A fixed device needs the most dependable connection: use Ethernet when a cable route is feasible.
No universal speed gain can be promised from moving a router or adding a point: outcomes depend on the home, equipment, internet service, and placement. Diagnose the bottleneck before buying anything.
