Boeing announced the selection on September 29, 2026. The aircraft is intended to replace the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet fleet, but its design and program details remain classified.
Who won the Navy’s F/A-XX contract?
The Navy selected Boeing for the F/A-XX program, which the company describes as a sixth-generation fighter. Boeing announced the award on September 29, 2026, calling it a multi-billion-dollar contract. Axios reported the value as more than $20 billion; Boeing’s announcement did not provide an exact figure. Boeing’s announcement and Axios’s report provide those respective descriptions.
Boeing prevailed over Northrop Grumman, which reporting identified as the other finalist. Axios reported that Lockheed Martin had earlier been eliminated. These are accounts of the competition, not a public comparison of the firms’ designs.
What is the F/A-XX for?
The F/A-XX is intended to replace the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet fleet and operate from aircraft carriers. Axios says it will complement the F-35, rather than replace it. USNI News reported that the transition to the new aircraft was expected on carriers in the 2030s; that is a reported planning horizon, not a confirmed service-entry date.

The Navy has also discussed a future carrier air wing in terms of greater reach, stealth, MQ-25A Stingray unmanned refueling and collaborative combat aircraft. In April 2026, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle spoke about these broader air-wing concepts, as reported by USNI News. They should not be read as confirmed features of Boeing’s classified F/A-XX design.
How the award timing changed
In an April 20, 2026, USNI News report, Caudle said he expected a downselect in August: “I think you’re going to see a downselect on this in August. I think that’s the month that they have committed to making the decision on the program.” Boeing announced the award on September 29, later than that forecast. The August remark was an expectation, not the award date.

What is known—and what remains classified
Boeing said in its September 29 announcement: “The technical and programmatic details of F/A-XX remain classified under U.S. national security and export laws.” Its release establishes the selected contractor and the program’s broad role, but does not disclose the winning aircraft’s configuration, range, speed, weapons, engine, crew arrangement, delivery milestones or detailed cost.
Axios’s figure of more than $20 billion is a reported contract value, not a published unit cost. The reviewed public reporting does not establish an F/A-XX price per aircraft; figures associated with the separate Air Force NGAD program should not be treated as F/A-XX costs.
