Columbus erased an early deficit with three first-period goals in less than six minutes, then relied on timely scoring and a perfect penalty kill to keep Buffalo at arm’s length.
How Columbus turned an early deficit into a lead
Buffalo struck first through Mattias Samuelsson, but Columbus answered with a three-goal burst in a 5:53 span late in the opening period. Knies’s first goal came on the power play at 17:58: Charlie Coyle fed him in the slot, and Knies finished with a one-timer to put the Blue Jackets ahead 2-1. Columbus added another goal before the period ended, carrying a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
The NHL’s game recap and the Sabres recap both confirm the final score and the first-period momentum swing.
Knies scores again after a key penalty kill
Buffalo’s Jack Quinn and Konsta Helenius scored as the Sabres tried to stay in the game. Knies restored Columbus’s two-goal cushion at 7:45 of the second period, making it 4-2 shortly after the Blue Jackets killed a Buffalo two-man advantage. His two goals and one assist made him one of the central figures in his first game with Columbus after arriving from Toronto earlier that week.

Columbus acquired Knies from Toronto on Monday in a six-player trade that sent Kirill Marchenko to Toronto. The NHL recap identifies those details but does not establish further trade terms.
Special teams helped decide the opener
Columbus converted two of its three power-play opportunities and killed all five Buffalo power plays, including the two-man advantage before Knies’s second goal. That 5-for-5 penalty kill prevented the Sabres from turning their opportunities into goals.
