The same TechBullion article promotes Pepeto presale and staking claims that also remain unverified. These are separate stories: one concerns a derivatives-market measure; the other is a token-sale pitch.
What the Bitcoin open-interest report says—and what it does not
TechBullion’s October 3 article attributes a $39.8 billion Bitcoin open-interest reading on October 2, 2026, and a $2.3 billion increase over the preceding three days to CoinDesk. The article is the available source for those numbers; they have not been independently confirmed against CoinDesk’s original report or primary market data. Read them as article-reported figures, not as a verified, comprehensive total for every Bitcoin derivatives venue. TechBullion’s article
Open interest is the number of futures contracts that remain open. It is not the same as trading volume: volume counts contracts traded over a period, while open interest changes as positions are opened or closed. Every open futures contract has both a long side and a short side, so a rise in open interest does not mean that the market has become net long, nor does it establish which side is likely to win.
CME Group describes open interest as one variable traders may use alongside other analysis to support decisions. A jump can indicate that more positions are being carried, but the figure alone cannot establish whether the added exposure reflects hedging, speculation, or a coming price move. Why the venue matters
CME Bitcoin futures are USD cash-settled contracts based on the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate. They can provide Bitcoin price exposure or a way to hedge without directly owning bitcoin, but CME’s contract data is not a count of every offshore or crypto-native derivatives market. TechBullion also reports that BTC briefly topped $86,000 before standing at $84,636 on October 3, says funding rates on major exchanges turned positive, and mentions $103 million in spot ETF inflows on the first day of October. The article attributes these details to CoinDesk, but no underlying price, exchange-rate, or ETF-flow data was independently checked here. The funding-rate claim does not identify the exchanges, rates, or observation times. Treat these as attributed reports rather than verified current market readings.

Even if confirmed, price, funding rates, ETF flows, and open interest measure different things. They should not be collapsed into a single bullish or bearish conclusion: open interest tracks outstanding futures contracts, funding rates relate to perpetual-contract positioning, ETF flows track fund activity, and spot prices record trading in the underlying market.

How to read the two stories without conflating them
- For the BTC headline: distinguish the reported open-interest figure from a verified venue-by-venue measurement, and do not infer price direction from the increase alone.
- For the Pepeto pitch: treat fundraising, yield, exchange, audit, and listing statements as unverified until supported by accessible primary documentation.
- For either: check what a number measures, who reported it, the relevant date and scope, and whether the underlying evidence is available. A derivatives statistic and a presale promotion are not equivalent investment choices.
