You can set up a TP-Link Wi-Fi extender with the Tether app, a web browser, or WPS—if your router supports it. Start with the extender plugged in near the router, then move it toward the weak-signal area after setup. The exact screens and button steps vary by model and hardware revision, so use the guide for your specific unit.
Choose a setup method
| Method | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Tether app | A smartphone, a compatible extender, and access to its temporary Wi-Fi network | A guided setup on your phone |
| Web browser | A phone or computer connected to the extender’s Wi-Fi network | A browser-based alternative to the app |
| WPS | A router and extender that both support WPS | Button-based pairing |
TP-Link documents all three routes for the RE305 V4, but setup details differ among models. If WPS is unavailable or pairing fails, use the app or browser route instead. TP-Link’s troubleshooting FAQ notes that instructions can vary by model.
Prepare the extender
- Plug the extender into an outlet near your router.
- Wait until the Power LED is solid before starting configuration.
- Find the model name and hardware revision printed on the extender. Use the support guide for that exact revision; button timing and screen sequences should not be assumed universal.
Starting near the router makes initial configuration easier. After setup, move the extender toward the weak-signal area while keeping it within usable router range.
Set it up with the Tether app
- Connect your phone to the extender’s temporary Wi-Fi network.
- Open TP-Link Tether and follow the prompts to find the extender.
- Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its Wi-Fi password when prompted.
- Complete the remaining on-screen steps.
If Tether cannot find the extender, confirm that the phone is connected to the extender’s temporary network. TP-Link also recommends turning off cellular data as a troubleshooting step in some guidance. The router’s Wi-Fi password is needed for this configuration route. See TP-Link’s troubleshooting guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set it up in a web browser
- Connect a phone or computer to the extender’s Wi-Fi network.
- Open a browser and go to tplinkrepeater.net.
- Sign in or create the extender login as prompted.
- Follow the configuration screens to select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
TP-Link lists browser access as a setup and management option. Login prompts and configuration screens depend on the model.
Set it up with WPS
- Check that both your router and extender support WPS, and consult the guide for your extender’s exact model and revision.
- Start WPS on the router.
- Use the extender’s WPS control as directed in its model-specific guide.
- Wait for pairing to complete, following the extender’s indicator guidance.
The extended network may retain the router’s Wi-Fi name or use a name ending in EXT, depending on the model and setup method. If WPS is not available or does not pair, configure the extender with Tether or a browser.

Move the extender to a useful location
Once configuration is complete, unplug the extender and place it roughly halfway between the router and the weak-signal area. This is a starting point, not a guarantee: the extender still needs a usable signal from the router. If the new location does not work well, try an outlet closer to the router.
Fix common setup problems
- The app cannot find the extender: Connect the phone to the extender’s temporary Wi-Fi network. If discovery still fails, try turning off cellular data, as TP-Link suggests in some troubleshooting guidance.
- App or browser setup rejects the connection: Check that you entered the correct router Wi-Fi password, then reboot and retry.
- WPS pairing does not work: Verify that the router supports WPS and follow the instructions for the extender’s exact model and hardware revision. Switch to Tether or browser setup if needed.
- The extender works near the router but not in the intended spot: Move it closer to the router until it receives a usable signal.
Check the exact model guide
TP-Link products and hardware versions can differ in regional availability and setup details. Before following button timing or screen-by-screen instructions, match the model and hardware revision printed on your unit to its support page. The TP-Link support FAQ is a general troubleshooting reference; it does not make one model’s procedure universal.
