Tennessee’s September 30, 2026, attempt to execute Christa Pike failed after officials administered two doses of pentobarbital, according to reports by AFP and Le Monde. Volker Türk, the UN human-rights chief, urged Tennessee not to try again and said his office saw the case as evidence for abolishing the death penalty. That was a call from Türk’s office—not evidence of a unanimous global response.
What happened during the execution attempt
Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed at a Tennessee prison on Wednesday, September 30. AFP reported that two pentobarbital doses were administered but the execution did not proceed. Its account said Pike was taken to a hospital, though officials did not explain how she survived the doses in that report.
Le Monde, reporting on October 2 with details attributed to Pike’s attorney and journalists at the scene, described an attempt lasting roughly half an hour after about an hour of efforts to establish IV access. The first dose was administered at 7:42 p.m.; after a second dose, witnesses heard groaning and labored breathing. The attempt ended around 8:15 p.m., according to that account.
These accounts are not a definitive medical chronology or an official finding. AFP described two failed attempts and said Pike’s condition was unknown at the time of its October 1 report. Le Monde later reported that she was in intensive care on the evening of October 1. It also reported that an ambulance was dispatched at 8:50 p.m. AFP noted an ambulance leaving the prison but said it was unclear whether Pike was aboard.

What Tennessee officials and the governor said
The Tennessee Department of Correction said it “followed every step of the state’s lawful, established execution protocol” and that Pike was taken to an “off-site medical facility,” AFP reported. Those are the department’s statements; the reports reviewed do not independently establish what happened procedurally.
Governor Bill Lee called for a “comprehensive, third-party review,” according to AFP. In its October 2 report, Le Monde said Lee had announced a suspension of capital punishment in Tennessee and an inquiry, including a full review of the procedure. Neither report provided review findings.

Why the UN human-rights chief objected
AFP reported that Volker Türk urged Tennessee not to make another attempt to execute Pike. His office said: “The case of Christa Pike lays bare multiple reasons why the death penalty should be abolished.” It described the “prolonged suffering — physical and mental — arising from multiple failed execution attempts” as “abhorrent, and cruel,” and also raised “key fair trial questions still unresolved.”
The UN statement connects the reported suffering during the failed attempt with broader concerns about the death penalty and Pike’s case. It does not establish that governments or publics around the world issued a coordinated call for abolition. The reports also do not resolve the fair-trial questions cited by Türk’s office.

Who Christa Pike is and what her lawyers argued
Pike was convicted of the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, when Pike was 18. Le Monde reported that Pike pleaded guilty and had spent 30 years on death row.
Her attorneys sought clemency, citing her age at the time of the crime, childhood sexual abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and a blood condition. Le Monde also described other diagnoses and the lawyers’ argument that relevant evidence was not presented at trial. These are claims advanced by her current attorneys, not findings established by the news reports.

What is known about a possible next step
The legal consequences of the failed attempt were unclear in Le Monde’s October 2 account, which noted that precedents are scarce. The article recounted that Willie Francis survived an improperly set-up electric chair in 1946 and was executed the following year. That history does not determine whether another attempt on Pike would be lawful. The reports do not establish a current court ruling or a new execution date.
Political responses differed. Le Monde quoted Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn calling for a return to the electric chair, while Amherst College law professor Austin Sarat described a period of national reconsideration and noted that some states continue executions. These are attributed opinions, not evidence of a national consensus. AFP, citing the Death Penalty Information Center, reported that 18 women have been executed in the United States since 1976; the figure was attributed to DPIC and was not independently verified in the report.
