Nanosecond timing is a system property, not a laser-driver specification. In direct time-of-flight (ToF), a 1 ns error in the measured round-trip interval corresponds to about 15 cm of one-way range error. Improving range therefore means controlling and validating the entire path from trigger to optical emission, through the returning echo and receiver, to the timestamp—not just choosing a driver with a fast edge.
What nanosecond timing means for range
A direct-ToF system measures the elapsed time between transmitting a light pulse and detecting its return. For a round-trip interval t, one-way distance is D = ct/2, where c is the speed of light. Using c ≈ 3 × 108 m/s, a 1 ns error in that interval produces about 0.15 m of one-way range error.
Be precise about what the system calls a timestamp. The transmit reference might be a trigger edge, a measured electrical pulse, or an estimate of optical emission; the receive timestamp might be a comparator transition or a processed signal event. Fixed offsets can be calibrated, but the calibration is only useful if the delay chain remains stable under the operating conditions. A change in driver delay, pulse shape, receiver response, or threshold crossing can appear as a range change even when the target has not moved.
Build a timing budget across the whole chain
Start with the allowable range error and convert it to a round-trip time error using Δt = 2ΔD/c. Then allocate that timing allowance across the actual sources of error. Separate fixed delay, which can often be calibrated, from variable delay and measurement uncertainty, which determine repeatability and residual accuracy.

Transmitter contributions
- Trigger-to-optical-emission delay: Account for propagation through the driver and the time between the electrical command and actual light emission. Measure its variation with temperature, supply voltage, pulse repetition rate, and self-heating; a stable fixed delay is less concerning than drift.
- Rise and fall time: The edge shape affects when an electrical or optical waveform crosses a chosen detection level. A fast nominal edge alone does not guarantee a stable crossing if its amplitude or shape changes.
- Pulse-to-pulse variation: Track timing jitter and pulse-amplitude consistency. Amplitude changes can alter the pulse envelope and shift a threshold receiver’s timestamp.
- Electrical parasitics: Package and PCB inductance, along with diode and output capacitance, constrain edge speed and repeatability. Current-delivery paths and layout are therefore part of the timing design, not only power-integrity concerns.
Receiver and timestamp contributions
- Echo-dependent time walk: Target reflectivity and geometry change the received echo amplitude. A fixed threshold detects a weak and a strong echo at different points on the rising edge, shifting the timestamp.
- Comparator delay variation: Comparator overdrive dispersion is the change in propagation delay as input overdrive above threshold changes. A comparator’s nominal propagation speed does not describe this amplitude-dependent contribution; see TI’s ToF application brief on overdrive dispersion.
- Bandwidth and noise: Receiver bandwidth that is too low can attenuate or broaden the response; unnecessarily high bandwidth can admit more noise. Both can make the chosen timing point less reliable.
- Timing electronics: Include the receiver output stage, clocking and time-to-digital conversion in the budget. TI’s ToF systems note discusses a TDC7201-based timing example.
Do not combine every error term as if it were random jitter. For a conservative bound, add worst-case limits; use a root-sum-square estimate only for contributions that are demonstrably independent and specified statistically. Keep calibration residuals, drift, systematic time walk, and random jitter identifiable rather than hiding them in one headline number.
Choose a timing discriminator that fits the echo
Leading-edge threshold
A fixed threshold is straightforward, but its timestamp moves with echo amplitude: a stronger echo crosses the threshold earlier on its rising edge than a weaker one. That time walk matters across targets with different reflectivity or geometry. Comparator overdrive dispersion adds a separate delay change as the signal’s overdrive changes. Characterize both effects over the amplitude range expected at the receiver instead of relying on the comparator’s nominal delay alone.

High-pass zero-crossing timing
ams OSRAM describes high-pass timing discrimination as an alternative: filtering can turn a pulse into a bipolar waveform whose zero crossing provides a timing point that is less dependent on amplitude than a fixed leading-edge threshold. The method depends on the receiver remaining linear and the waveform not being distorted; it is not automatically superior in every design. The same application note discusses matching pulse width to receiver bandwidth, detector dynamic range, and optical filtering to reject ambient light: ams OSRAM AN106.
Whatever discriminator is selected, define the timing point explicitly and test it across the full echo-amplitude range. A timing method that performs well on one clean, high-amplitude bench waveform may not remain stable with weak returns, ambient light, or a distorted pulse.

Match pulse width, receiver bandwidth, and system needs
Pulse width affects the shape and duration of the received response, while receiver bandwidth determines how faithfully that response is preserved. A receiver with insufficient bandwidth can attenuate or broaden the pulse; excessive bandwidth can increase noise and destabilize the timing estimate. Choose these together, then validate the resulting timing behavior—not by assuming that the narrowest pulse or widest receiver is always best.
The transmitter choice is also constrained by the application. Before settling on a topology, establish the required target range, field of view, pixel count, frame rate, wavelength, peak optical power, pulse repetition rate, scan and synchronization needs, ambient-light rejection, optical attenuation, interference environment, and eye-safety limits. EPC’s application note discusses these system-level considerations alongside high-current nanosecond resonant laser-diode drivers and low-inductance layouts: EPC AN032.

Validate the optical timing, not just the electrical command
- Define the event pair. State what starts and stops the measurement, where each event is observed, and how fixed delays are calibrated. Keep the electrical trigger, optical emission, received waveform, and final timestamp distinct in test records.
- Measure the transmitter chain. Capture the driver output and optical pulse together with a timing reference. Measure trigger-to-light delay, rise and fall behavior, pulse width, amplitude stability, and pulse-to-pulse timing variation.
- Repeat over operating conditions. Vary temperature, supply, repetition rate, and thermal state. This reveals delay drift and edge or amplitude changes that a room-temperature, single-pulse test will miss.
- Test the receive chain across echo levels. Use representative weak and strong returns to measure threshold time walk, comparator overdrive effects, receiver bandwidth behavior, and ambient-light sensitivity. Confirm that the detector and receiver remain within their linear operating range.
- Verify end-to-end range. Compare reported range against a known geometry across target types and signal levels. Separate fixed offset from repeatability and amplitude-dependent bias; recalibrate only after the underlying timing reference and conditions are defined.
- Check the complete operating envelope. Confirm that optical output, wavelength, pulse repetition, scan behavior, and environmental conditions meet the design’s safety and system requirements. The cited sources identify IEC 60825 as relevant, but the applicable requirements must be checked for the actual product and jurisdiction before sign-off.
What published hardware figures do—and do not—show
Published figures can help select evaluation hardware or understand a particular design, but they are not a controlled comparison of driver performance and should not be treated as expected system-level range accuracy.
| Example | Reported figure | Scope and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| TI LMG1020EVM-006 | TI states 1 ns pulse capability above 50 A, 2.5 ns typical and 4.5 ns maximum propagation delay, and 210 ps typical rise/fall time. | These are TI’s stated evaluation-board specifications. The board uses an integrated resistive load and does not include a laser; it is a development aid, not a finished sensor. TI product page. |
| TI TIDA-01187 reference design | TI states measurement range up to 9 m or greater, mean error under ±6 mm, standard deviation under 3 cm, and a 5.75 W pulsed 905 nm laser diode with under 1 mW average output power. | These are figures for TI’s specific transmitter/receiver reference design, not general ToF-system performance. TI reference-design page. |
| Eight-channel laser-diode array prototype | The authors report gate-driver pulse-width jitter standard deviations of 46–102 ps across eight channels. | These are measurements from the specific prototype and setup described in the 2024 paper, not a universal driver specification. Applied Sciences paper. |
The LMG1020EVM-006 is relevant when evaluating a fast GaN low-side driver and GaN FET arrangement, but a resistive-load result does not establish optical timing with a particular laser diode, layout, or receiver. EPC AN032 is relevant when investigating resonant high-current approaches. Select between implementations using measured delay and drift, pulse shape and jitter, optical stability, channel and repetition requirements, parasitics, thermal behavior, receiver time walk, and safety constraints; the cited material does not establish a universal winner.

Design priorities that most directly improve timing
- Make the timing reference optical and end-to-end where possible; otherwise characterize the offset from the electrical reference to actual emission.
- Stabilize the current pulse and the physical current loop. Minimize layout and package parasitics that change edge shape or pulse repeatability.
- Budget receiver time walk explicitly across expected echo amplitude, and choose the comparator and discrimination method for that range.
- Match pulse width and receiver bandwidth, then check both noise and distortion on realistic return signals.
- Measure variation across temperature, supply, repetition rate, and warm-up state, rather than relying on nominal delay or a single test waveform.
