Threads is reportedly testing a way to place a quoted post over a photo or video while composing an image post. The option is described as limited to some users, so check your Threads composer to see whether it is available to your account.
How the visual quote-post test reportedly works
According to Social Media Today’s October 1, 2026 report, people included in the test see a “Quote” option in the editing menu while preparing an image post. They can choose a post from their liked posts, saved posts, or their own updates, then layer it over an attached photo or video.
The reported workflow combines the quoted post and media in the composer. The report does not establish that every Threads user has the option or provide a confirmed public release date.
How to put a Threads post over a photo

- Open the editing menu and look for “Quote.”
- Select an eligible post from your liked posts, saved posts, or your own updates, then position it over the media as the editor allows.
- Review the composition and publish if it matches what you intend to share.
This is the flow described in secondary reporting, not a confirmed step-by-step guide from Meta. If “Quote” does not appear in your composer, the test may not be available to your account. The report does not specify supported app versions, eligibility rules, or countries.

What Meta has confirmed
Meta’s April 2025 Threads web update says users can copy a Threads post as an image to share on Instagram and other apps. That establishes a related post-as-image workflow, but it does not announce or confirm the newer photo-overlay test.
Meta’s March 2025 Threads feature announcement discusses quote posts and references quote controls introduced in November 2024. It provides context for conventional quote-post functionality, not for placing a quote over attached media. No matching official Meta announcement confirming the overlay test or its rollout details is established by these sources.

Social Media Today also describes stickers, layouts, and an option to divide one photo into as many as nine parts in the image composer. These are separate reported editing options, not requirements for using the quote overlay.
