Redeeming a tokenized real-world asset (RWA) means asking the issuer or its appointed agent to process your token under the product’s terms. You might receive cash, the referenced asset, or something narrower, such as a contractual claim to income. The blockchain transaction is only one possible step: eligibility checks, valuation, issuer processing, banking or custody arrangements, and delivery can all affect when you receive the proceeds. There is no standard RWA redemption timeline.
What redemption involves
A token represents a claim defined by the product’s legal documents; it does not, by itself, establish a right to take possession of the asset it references. The U.S. Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee describes tokenization as representing claims digitally on a programmable platform. It distinguishes the layer that records information about the asset and ownership from the service layer that governs transfers and settlement. That distinction matters at redemption: a token can be transferred, locked, or burned on a ledger without that action alone establishing that off-chain payment or delivery is complete.

The exact process varies, but a typical redemption request moves through these stages:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the terms and eligibility. Confirm who may redeem, which jurisdictions and wallets qualify, the minimum amount, acceptable settlement methods, and any request cutoff. Some routes are open only to verified customers or institutional participants.
- Submit a valid request. The issuer may require an app request, a form, an instruction to an agent, or a transfer of tokens to a designated address. The Federal Reserve’s 2023 MatrixDock STBT case study describes an app request or transfer to the issuer’s designated address.
- Validation and valuation. The issuer or agent checks the request and calculates the cash or asset amount due under the product’s price, valuation, and fee rules. A quoted token value is not necessarily the redemption price.
- Token accounting. Depending on the terms, the token may be surrendered, burned, locked, or otherwise removed from the holder’s balance. The time of this ledger action is not automatically the time of final settlement.
- Settlement and delivery. Cash may have to pass through payment or bank rails. Physical assets may require custodian handling and shipping. These steps can have separate completion times.
For covered asset-referenced tokens under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), Article 39 requires issuers to describe redemption conditions, thresholds, timeframes, valuation principles, and settlement conditions. It establishes a right of redemption against the issuer for that defined category. Its fee provision is subject to the qualification in Article 46. These requirements do not apply to every token marketed as an RWA.

How long redemption can take
The published examples below measure different products, settlement stages, and participant types. They are not a market-wide range, and their durations cannot be averaged into a reliable expectation for a different token.
| Example | Reported timing | What the timing covers |
|---|---|---|
| MatrixDock STBT, Federal Reserve Board case study (2023) | T+4 New York Banking Days | A product-specific redemption timeline. It is not a general schedule for Treasury tokens. |
| Tether Gold, issuer terms accessed in 2026 | Several business days | Tether says it makes commercially reasonable efforts to process verified physical-redemption requests promptly; its terms allow delays in specified circumstances. |
| Tokenized gold fund, SEC-filed document (2025) | Second business day after the redemption order date | Distribution to an authorized participant, provided the filing’s stated DTC credit condition is met. This is not a retail-holder benchmark. |
| Ondo Finance cross-border pilot (2026) | Under five seconds | The reported XRPL asset leg in an institutional transaction. A separate fiat payout instruction and bank-infrastructure settlement followed; the figure does not time retail bank-credit delivery. |
| Covered payment tokens under a Central Bank of the UAE rule effective in 2024 | By the same time on the next business day after a request, unless the Central Bank permits otherwise | The stated outer timing applies to that rule’s specified payment-token category, not to RWA tokens generally. |
These examples show why it helps to ask what the clock measures. Request review, token processing, issuer payment, credit to your bank account, and physical delivery are distinct milestones. The issuer’s current terms—not another product’s timeline—are the relevant source for a specific redemption.
What you may receive depends on the claim
“Redeem” does not always mean “exchange a token for the underlying asset.” The legal and operational route depends on what the token represents and who holds it.

Cash or the value of referenced assets
For the asset-referenced tokens covered by MiCA Article 39, the issuer’s redemption policy must describe whether redemption pays funds corresponding to the market value of the referenced assets or delivers those assets. The policy also defines the applicable conditions and settlement process. This statutory right is specific to the covered EU regulatory category.
Physical gold, if the product’s conditions are met
Paxos describes PAXG as representing one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold held in London vaults and says it is redeemable one-to-one for physical gold. The product also allows fractional gold ownership; that does not mean every fraction can be delivered independently as a bar.
Tether Gold’s terms permit verified customers to request physical gold subject to conditions that include minimum size and fees. The terms describe delivery of a London Good Delivery bar, whose actual weight and purity can vary rather than equaling exactly 400 fine troy ounces. They give 430 tokens as an example of a requested deposit, with the amount actually redeemed adjusted for the bar’s size and purity. These are issuer-specific terms, not a general rule for tokenized gold.

Income or another contractual claim, not the property
The Federal Reserve’s 2023 Lofty case study describes property held through an LLC, with tokens representing membership shares and returns from rent and appreciation. It notes that redemption of the underlying property is unlikely because the token refers to a legal claim to returns, not the property itself. Read the governing documents to identify the claim before assuming a property-linked token can be exchanged for real estate.

A physical asset only after collecting all fractions
In the Federal Reserve paper’s Tangible TNFT example, the reference asset is redeemable only when a holder owns all fractions. That is one product design; it is not a rule for non-fungible tokens generally.
Fund units through an institutional route
A 2025 SEC-filed tokenized gold fund document describes redemptions by authorized participants in creation units of 50,000 shares. Tokenized shares may first need to be converted to traditional shares for the relevant redemption process. The filing also reserves the ability to reject, suspend, or postpone redemptions in specified circumstances. This route is not an ordinary retail redemption option.

Price, fees, and timing conditions to check
Before submitting a request, find the product’s current redemption instructions and look for the details that determine what you actually receive:
- Eligibility and minimums: holder type, identity verification, jurisdiction, wallet requirements, minimum token balance, whole-unit requirements, or physical-delivery threshold.
- Settlement choice: cash, a cash equivalent, the referenced asset, or a contractual claim to returns. Check whether the chosen route is available to you.
- Valuation formula: market value, net asset value, a settlement or execution price, or another method. Do not assume a one-token-to-one-dollar payout. In the Federal Reserve’s 2023 MatrixDock STBT example, early redemption used an execution price that could be below one dollar per token.
- Costs: issuer redemption fees and any separate network, custody, delivery, or bank charges. The MatrixDock STBT case study reports a product-specific 0.1% redemption fee; that figure is not a general RWA fee. Applicable regulation may constrain charges for some categories.
- Clock and cutoff: whether the stated period uses calendar days, business days, or banking days; which banking jurisdiction applies; and how cutoffs, weekends, and holidays affect processing.
- Delays or suspension: circumstances in which the issuer can reject, suspend, or postpone a request, including compliance review, market disruption, or reserve illiquidity or unavailability.
For a realistic estimate, record separately the expected time for request validation, token processing, issuer payment, bank credit, and—if relevant—custodian release and physical delivery. A displayed transaction confirmation may show only that an on-chain step has completed.
