To level a 3D printer bed, follow the procedure for your exact printer, then print a first-layer test and adjust the nozzle gap only if the pattern shows it is needed. A rounded line with gaps usually means the nozzle is too high; a very flat, ridged line or scraping usually means it is too low. Poor adhesion can also come from a dirty or incorrectly seated build plate, extrusion problems, or unsuitable temperature settings.
Before you adjust anything, identify the printer’s leveling system
“Leveling” can mean several related jobs. Manual tramming adjusts the bed’s mechanical plane relative to the nozzle’s travel. Mesh leveling measures variation across the surface and compensates for it in software. Z-offset sets the nozzle-to-surface distance. They are not interchangeable, and menu names, procedures, and offset directions vary by printer.
| Method | What it changes or checks | How to tell it worked |
|---|---|---|
| Manual tramming | Mechanical bed alignment at adjustment points; use only if your printer supports it. | A repeatable gap check at the prescribed points, followed by a consistent first-layer test. |
| Mesh leveling | Measures bed variation and compensates for it over a grid. | The printer completes its probe routine without errors and the first layer is consistent. |
| Z-offset or live Z | Nozzle-to-surface gap during printing or calibration. | Test lines are joined and gently flattened without ridges or scraping. |
Check your printer’s manual for the required bed temperature, corner order, probe sequence, and controls before changing knobs or firmware settings. Do not assume that automatic probing eliminates all setup: Creality’s K2/K2 Pro guidance says to adjust an uneven bed mechanically before running its leveling calibration (Creality K2/K2 Pro adhesion troubleshooting).
Check the plate and printer before tramming
- Make sure the build surface is clean and correctly seated. If it is removable, check for debris between the sheet and its mount.
- Remove loose filament from the nozzle, which can interfere with homing or probing.
- If your printer’s instructions permit it, check for an obstructed or loose nozzle and other loose components.
- Follow the care guidance for your specific plate coating. Creality’s K2/K2 Pro guide recommends dish soap and water for a contaminated platform, but that advice should not be applied blindly to other surfaces.
- Do not press on the bed while a probe routine is running. Prusa lists pressure during probing and debris as possible reasons its mesh routine may retry.
A bed adjustment will not fix a greasy plate, under-extrusion, a loose sheet, or a temperature setting that does not suit the filament. Prusa’s first-layer calibration guidance also lists print settings and calibration as possible causes when adhesion is poor.

- 【Strong compatibility】Creality CR Touch auto leveling kit Compatible with PEI / sticker / glass / metal platform.
Manually tram the bed when your printer calls for it
Example: Creality Ender-3
The steps below apply to the manual bed-adjustment procedure in the Creality Ender-3 manual, not to every printer. That manual specifies ordinary A4 paper and adjustment at the four corners.
- Auto-home the printer, then disable the steppers as the manual directs.
- Move the nozzle over one of the designated corner adjustment points.
- Slide a sheet of standard A4 paper between the nozzle and bed. Adjust that corner until the nozzle lightly scratches the paper.
- Repeat the check at the other three corners, following the machine’s prescribed sequence.
- Repeat the four-corner sequence one or two times if needed, since changing one corner can affect the others.
The CrealityOfficial Ender-3 V3 KE leveling guide emphasizes consistent friction rather than an exact paper thickness or force: “The exact amount of friction felt isn’t crucial, just as the amount of thermal expansion and exact width of the paper isn’t crucial. Just try to obtain the same amount of friction each time one runs the test.” For other printers, use the maker’s own prescribed points and procedure; do not assume the Ender-3 paper test applies.

Read the first-layer pattern before changing Z-offset
Run your manufacturer’s first-layer calibration or a suitable single-layer test, and watch the deposited lines. Make small adjustments with the printer’s own live-adjust or Z-offset control while the pattern prints, then assess the result.
- Nozzle likely too high: Lines look rounded, sit loosely, or fail to join, leaving gaps. Prusa’s calibration guidance also identifies gaps in the end square as a sign that the nozzle is set too high.
- Nozzle likely too low: Lines are excessively flattened, rough, or ridged; the nozzle may scrape the surface. Stop if it is visibly scraping, and raise the nozzle using the control appropriate to your machine.
- Gap looks right but lines still will not stick: Look at plate cleanliness and seating, filament and bed-temperature settings, extrusion, and calibration rather than continuing to alter height.
Offset direction is not universal. On the Prusa models covered by its Live Adjust Z guidance, making the value more negative moves the nozzle closer to the bed. Do not apply that sign convention to other firmware. Use your printer maker’s instructions and let the printed pattern—not another model’s numeric offset—guide the adjustment.

- The 3D Touch auto leveling sensor is a device that uses the Hall defect to achieve leveling .The position of the point can be obtained by touching the point on the heated bed ,and then compensated by adjusting the Z-AXIS height during printing ,Printing can also be achieved even though the platform is not flat .
- Features simple, smart and precise. It could work with nearly any kind of bed materials, such as glasses, woods, metals and so on. The position of the point can be obtained by touching the point on the heated bed, and then compensated by adjusting the z-axis height during printing.
- The main functions and controls of 3D touch are the same as most auto bed leveling sensors, which consists of a RC servo and a micro switch,thus,3D printer touch can be used on almost every 3D printer control board.
- NOTE: Pulling/pushing hardly on the push-pin may damage Touch sensor and make it less accurate. Any problem when you receive the order, CONTACT US FIRST please!
- By using progressively designed solenoid and hall sensor, it can integrate high precision in such a simple structure. To make it more user-friendly and to bring you more enjoyable printing experience.
Understand what automatic mesh leveling can and cannot do
A probe or mesh routine measures surface variation and applies compensation; it does not necessarily correct a grossly uneven bed, a seating problem, or a faulty probe. Creality’s K2/K2 Pro guidance calls for manual adjustment when the bed is uneven before calibration.
Some systems handle first-layer calibration differently. Prusa says load-cell-equipped MK4/S, MK3.9/S, and XL/+ families calibrate the first layer automatically during mesh bed leveling after self-test, so manual Live Z and steel-sheet profiles are not normally required on those documented models (Prusa load-cell calibration). Prusa also documents mesh leveling and bed-level correction options for covered MINI and MK3-family machines (Prusa mesh bed leveling). These model-specific features are not a general rule for other printers.

On Prusa’s documented 7×7 mesh system, the manufacturer notes that readings at three of 49 points can be off by as much as 80 μm because those points are close to magnets. That is a specific detail about that system, not a general allowance for bed-leveling error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If probing or calibration fails
A failed probe routine does not by itself prove the bed is out of level. For the Prusa families covered in its probing-failure guidance, check for filament residue on the nozzle or bed, confirm that the steel sheet sits flat, and check for nozzle obstruction or looseness. Custom start G-code and probe or load-cell problems can also interfere. Use the diagnostic steps for your own printer; if its documented checks do not resolve the error, inspect the relevant probe or load-cell wiring and mounting only as its manufacturer directs.
