On Google Play, start with the app’s listing and inspect the developer name and any developer contact details shown. Compare them with the developer’s official website or support channels if available. For apps installed from participating stores, Android’s Developer Verifier may also check whether the app is registered to a verified developer. These checks establish identity or registration—not whether an app is safe.
Check the developer details on Google Play
- Open the app’s Google Play listing. Find the developer name and open the developer or contact information shown on the page.
- Review the details that are actually public. Google says the fields shown vary with the developer’s account type and whether the app is monetized. The email address and phone number Google uses to contact the developer are not necessarily displayed to users. Google Play’s developer contact-information guidance explains which details may be visible.
- Compare the identity with the developer’s own channels. If the listing links to a website, check whether that site identifies the same person or organization as the app’s developer and whether its support details are consistent. A matching name is a useful cross-check, not an official verification test or proof of identity.
For merchant accounts that monetize through paid apps or in-app purchases, Google says the full legal address associated with the linked Google Payments profile must appear on Google Play. This does not mean every developer’s home address is publicly displayed. Google’s guidance for verified Play Console accounts describes the merchant-address requirement.
Understand Android’s developer-verification signal
Android’s newer verification system involves two related checks: verifying the developer’s identity and registering app package names. Android Developer Verifier checks whether an app is registered to a verified developer; this registration signal is separate from the public details on an app’s store listing. Android Help explains the verifier and installation experience.
If Android blocks an installation because the developer is unverified, Android Help says you can contact the developer and ask them to complete verification. The help page also describes a one-time advanced flow to bypass the block. A bypass does not verify the developer or establish that the app is safe.

For apps distributed through Google Play, developers must verify their identity and register app package names. Developers can check identity status in Settings > Developer account; package registration status appears on the Android developer verification page or in Home-page notifications. Google states a September 30, 2026 deadline for Play package registration. Google’s package-name registration guidance gives the account paths and deadline.
Where Android’s rollout applies
As described in Android Help, starting in September 2026, apps from participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand must be registered by a verified developer to install and receive updates. The named stores are Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, V-Appstore, and GetApps. Google describes a global rollout across installation sources as planned for 2027. The guidance applies to certified devices running Android 8 and later; AOSP and non-certified devices are exempt. Because rollout scope and dates can change, check Android Help’s current rollout guidance for the latest details.

What verification does—and does not—tell you
Google distinguishes developer identity checks from app review. Its Android Developer Console Help states: “we will be confirming who the developer is, not reviewing the content of their app or where it came from.” Google’s developer-verification explanation uses an airport ID check as an analogy: confirming someone’s identity does not validate what they are carrying.
- Developer identity verification establishes that the developer’s identity has been checked.
- App package registration associates an app package with a verified developer for Android’s registration checks.
- Neither check is an endorsement, malware scan, privacy review, or guarantee that the app behaves safely.
Google says the legal name and address associated with a Play developer account come from its linked Google Payments profile. Developers can see a read-only version on the Android developer verification Identity tab. Public display is a separate question and depends on account circumstances, including the merchant-address requirement described above. Google’s contact-information guidance explains the user-facing fields.

A practical way to judge the result
- Use the Play listing’s developer details as a starting point, not as a safety verdict.
- Cross-check the name and support channels against the developer’s own website when one is available.
- If Android displays a registration warning, treat it as an installation and registration signal; contact the developer rather than assuming the warning proves the app is malicious.
- Do not treat a verified identity or registered package as evidence that the app’s permissions, privacy practices, or behavior are trustworthy.
