WhatsApp scams often rely on impersonation, urgency, secrecy, suspicious links, or a request for a verification code or money. Pause before acting, verify the claim through a separate trusted channel, and never share your WhatsApp registration code. If you already shared a code or lost access, use WhatsApp’s official recovery steps immediately.
How to recognize a WhatsApp scam
A message can look as if it came from someone you know, a business, or a government agency. The display name or familiar profile photo is not proof that the sender is genuine. Treat unexpected requests as suspicious when they pressure you to act quickly, keep the conversation secret, open a link, share personal information, or send money.
- A request for a verification code: Someone may claim they sent a code by mistake or need help with an account. Your WhatsApp registration code is an account key; do not share it in a chat, even if the request appears to come from a friend or relative. The FTC puts it plainly: “Anyone who asks you for your account verification code is a scammer.” (FTC Consumer Advice, March 2024.)
- An urgent or unusual request from a familiar person: A scammer may impersonate someone you know and ask for money, a code, or personal details. Contact that person using a phone number or app you already know is theirs—not contact details in the suspicious message.
- A link or login prompt you did not expect: Do not follow a link or enter credentials just because a message says your account, delivery, or payment needs attention. Verify through the service’s official app or website.
- A job or task that asks you to pay: The FTC warns that task scams can begin with an unexpected message on WhatsApp, Telegram, text, or social media. The pitch may promise easy online earnings, show fake balances, then demand a deposit—often in cryptocurrency—to unlock more tasks or withdraw supposed earnings. “Never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job,” the FTC says in its August 2025 task-scam guidance.
- Secrecy or a promise to recover lost money: Be cautious if someone tells you not to discuss a payment with anyone or asks for money to recover losses. Investment, romance, shopping, and recovery scams also occur across social media and other channels; they are not all specific to WhatsApp.
For any claim from a person or organization, verify independently with a number already on file or the official app or website. WhatsApp’s guidance on account safety is available in its Help Center.
What to do if you receive a suspicious message
- Stop interacting. Do not reply, click a link, install an app, share a code, or send money.
- Check the claim separately. Contact the supposed sender through a known-good number or app, or visit the organization’s official website yourself. Do not use links or phone numbers supplied in the suspicious message.
- Block and report the account or message in WhatsApp. This is separate from reporting the incident to a government agency or payment provider.
If your WhatsApp account may have been taken over
If you shared your registration code or can no longer access your account, re-register your phone number in WhatsApp and enter the six-digit code sent by SMS or delivered by a call. WhatsApp says this logs out other devices connected to the account. Follow the official compromised-account recovery instructions.

If WhatsApp asks for a two-step verification PIN you do not know, its Help Center says you may have to wait seven days before trying again. Do not give anyone a registration or recovery code while you wait.
After regaining access, review linked devices and remove any you do not recognize. Turn on the security features available in your app, and alert friends and family that your account may have been compromised—especially if messages could have been sent in your name. WhatsApp’s Help Center covers account security, blocking, and reporting; the exact settings and feature availability can vary.

If you sent money or shared other information
If you paid
Contact the bank, card issuer, payment app, or transfer provider immediately and ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed. The options depend on the payment method and timing; recovery is not guaranteed. Use the provider’s genuine app, website, or contact details rather than a number sent by the suspected scammer.
If you shared a password or login details
Change the exposed password and secure the affected account. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Enable two-factor authentication where available.

If you shared sensitive identity information
Use official identity-theft recovery guidance for your country. In the United States, the FTC directs people to IdentityTheft.gov for identity-theft recovery and ReportFraud.ftc.gov to report scams. These are US resources, not a global reporting directory. Elsewhere, contact your national fraud-reporting authority and notify your financial provider if financial details were exposed.

Meta announced on August 25, 2026, that WhatsApp was strengthening two-step verification with a longer alphanumeric password, adding context for some calls from unknown numbers on Android, and supporting passkeys. The announcement describes a rollout, so availability may vary by platform and account; inspect your current app settings rather than assuming every feature is available. Meta also described Strict Account Settings in January 2026 as a lockdown-style option for people who may face rare, sophisticated cyberattacks—not a routine requirement for every user.
