But its independent testing record is comparatively thin: SE Labs reported useful but imperfect results in 2024, Comodo’s listed AV-TEST results date to 2019, and Comodo was not included in AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer tests. If you prioritize extensive, recent lab coverage and a low-maintenance experience, compare alternatives before choosing it.
What Comodo offers
Comodo presents a free Antivirus tier and a paid complete tier. Its suite brings together antivirus, a firewall, application controls, sandboxing or containment, host intrusion prevention, cloud-based scanning, secure shopping and web filtering. The vendor says CIS 2025 adds real-time scanning, application sandboxing, Intel Threat Detection Technology and Microsoft ByPassIO support. These are vendor-described features, not independent test results.

How effective is Comodo against malware?
SE Labs: a useful, imperfect 2024 result
In its Home Endpoint Security test for April–June 2024, SE Labs gave Comodo Antivirus 90% total accuracy. That figure combines protection and legitimate-accuracy measures; it is not a promise that Comodo will block 90% of malware in every situation. The more specific results were 76% protection accuracy, 98% legitimate accuracy and 2% false positives. The protection figure indicates that threats were missed in that test, while the false-positive figure reflects the test’s classification of legitimate items. AV-TEST: historical scores, not current measurements
AV-TEST’s Comodo consumer archive lists Comodo Internet Security Premium 12 at 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance and 5.5/6 for usability in August 2019. A June 2019 entry recorded 6/6 for protection, 4/6 for performance and 5.5/6 for usability. Those are dated results and should not be treated as evidence of Comodo’s performance in 2026. AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer report tested 19 Windows products across areas including real-world protection, malware detection, targeted attacks, performance and false positives. What are Comodo’s main strengths and trade-offs?
Strengths
- Broad feature set: Antivirus protection comes alongside a firewall, application rules, containment, secure shopping and web filtering, according to Comodo’s product description.
- Low listed price and a free tier: Comodo offers a no-cost option and lists the paid complete version at the prices above.
- Fine-grained controls: TechRadar describes application-level network permissions, containment tools, event views, quarantine and bootable cleanup options. - A recent independent test exists: SE Labs’ 2024 result gives readers a dated, transparent data point, even though coverage from other named labs is older or absent.
Trade-offs
- Limited recent lab coverage: The listed AV-TEST consumer results are from 2019, and Comodo was absent from AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer series. This makes it harder to assess Comodo against products with broader recent public testing.
- Protection was not flawless in SE Labs’ test: Its 76% protection accuracy is distinct from the 90% total-accuracy result and indicates missed threats in that test.
- More decisions for the user: Firewall rules, application permissions and containment offer control, but can mean more alerts and choices than a set-and-forget product. That is a usability trade-off suggested by the documented controls, not a measured slowdown.
Is Comodo better than Windows Defender?
The available results do not establish that Comodo is better than Windows Defender. The cited Comodo results come from SE Labs in 2024 and AV-TEST in 2019; no directly comparable Windows Defender result from the same test conditions and period is provided here. Instead of treating one product’s score as a head-to-head verdict, compare current independent results, false positives, performance impact, ease of use and the firewall or application-control features you actually need.
Who should choose Comodo?
Consider Comodo if
- You use Windows and are comfortable making firewall or application-permission decisions.
- You value sandboxing or containment and want security controls beyond a basic set-and-forget experience.
- A free option or a low listed price is important, and you are willing to verify current pricing and terms.
Look elsewhere if
- You want a quiet, simple product that requires little configuration.
- You place high importance on a broad, recent record of independent testing.
- You are choosing protection for less technical users and want fewer alerts and decisions to manage.
How to compare Comodo with alternatives
When current recurring lab coverage matters, Bitdefender Total Security and Norton Antivirus Plus are alternatives to investigate: both appear in AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer tested set, while Comodo does not. Their inclusion alone does not prove either product is better for your needs. Compare products on the same practical criteria:

- False positives: Consider whether legitimate software or sites are likely to trigger warnings.
- Performance impact: Look for measurements from comparable tests rather than assuming a large feature set is faster or slower.
- Control depth: Decide whether you want detailed firewall and application rules or prefer automatic decisions.
- Price and renewal terms: Check the current price, number of devices covered and what happens at renewal.
- Ease of use: Consider who will respond to alerts and maintain settings on the protected PC.
