Yes. Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-upscaling option for the standard PlayStation 5. The first announced games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, both patched to add QSSR on October 1, 2026. Sony says the technology is designed to improve image detail and stability, but has not published numerical performance or image-quality benchmarks.
What QSSR does on the standard PS5
Sony describes QSSR as a faster, streamlined AI-upscaling technology designed for the standard PS5’s performance limits. Like PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), it analyzes game images at the pixel level and uses AI to upscale them. Sony says QSSR combines a streamlined neural-network architecture with an implementation hand-tuned for PS5 performance.

The technology grew out of Project Amethyst, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI-graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony says QSSR improves image detail and image stability, but its October 1, 2026 announcement gives no resolution targets or measured figures for frame rate, latency, or image quality. The scale of improvement will therefore depend on the game and cannot yet be compared numerically from Sony’s published information.
QSSR and PSSR: how they differ
| Feature | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Target hardware | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| Design | Faster performance tier, with a streamlined neural network and implementation tuned for the standard PS5 | Sony’s higher-end reference technology; the announcement does not detail its architecture for a direct technical comparison |
| Image claims | Sony says it improves detail and stability | Sony describes PSSR as analyzing images pixel by pixel and using AI to upscale them |
| Announced game availability | Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei received QSSR options on October 1, 2026 | QSSR’s announcement does not provide a PSSR game list |
QSSR is not simply PSSR under another name. Sony presents it as a separate, faster tier for the standard console, while PSSR remains the higher-end option on PS5 Pro.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two initial games, each receiving a patch on October 1, 2026 that adds QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5:
- Marvel’s Wolverine
- Ghost of Yōtei
Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but has not published a complete list of future compatible games. Availability depends on developers adding support; the announcement does not say that QSSR applies automatically to every PS5 game.

Will QSSR make games look sharper?
That is Sony’s stated aim: more visible fine detail and steadier images. Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine character and environmental details with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developer descriptions, not published independent measurements, and Sony’s announcement does not quantify the gains.

Check each game’s graphics settings after installing its update to see which modes are available on your console.

What Sony has—and has not—confirmed
- Confirmed: QSSR is an AI-upscaling tier for the standard PS5, built for its performance constraints.
- Confirmed: It uses a streamlined neural network and a PS5-tuned implementation, and comes from Project Amethyst, Sony’s collaboration with AMD.
- Confirmed: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first announced games with QSSR options.
- Not published: Numerical benchmarks, resolution targets, frame-rate effects, latency figures, or a complete future compatibility list.
