TCL Is Right to Question Samsung’s Use of the Term “Mini LED”

TCL’s challenge to Samsung’s M-series Mini LED label has a credible technical basis, but the lawsuit is unresolved and no universal definition settles the term.

Yes—TCL has a credible technical reason to challenge Samsung’s Mini LED labeling, especially for the M80H. Display experts commonly associate Mini LED backlights with full-array local dimming (FALD), while Samsung describes the M70H and M80H’s “Supreme Mini LED Dimming” as software-based rather than full-array hardware dimming. But TCL’s claims are allegations, not court findings, and there is no universally enforced industry definition of “Mini LED.”

What is TCL challenging?

In a federal complaint filed on August 31, 2026, TTE Technology, doing business as TCL North America, alleges Samsung marketed the M70H, M80H and M90H as Mini LED televisions even though they were recycled standard LED models derived from Samsung’s Crystal UHD line. TCL says those sets lack the hardware and local-dimming capabilities it considers central to Mini LED. The lawsuit’s claims have not been adjudicated.

TCL’s complaint describes Mini LED as using LEDs typically 0.1 mm to 0.3 mm in size, with dozens to thousands of LEDs controlled individually or in zones across the backlight. It alleges the Samsung M-series LEDs are 0.5 mm, mounted on two aluminum strips, and lack the control circuitry for local dimming. Those sizes and product descriptions are claims made by TCL in its complaint; they are not a court’s findings.

TCL’s core technical point is that more, smaller light sources are not the whole story: controlling separate areas of the backlight is what enables local dimming and can improve contrast. The complaint puts it this way: “Mini LEDs are a technological advancement in the television market that allow for a substantially better picture with greater dynamic range and higher contrast ratios.”

Does Mini LED require full-array local dimming?

There is no binding, universally enforced definition that settles the question. Samsung’s buying guide defines Mini LED in terms of LEDs that are smaller and more densely packed than those in conventional LED displays. The company markets its 2026 M-series, including the M80H, as Mini LED and says the technology improves brightness, contrast and light efficiency.

However, display experts cited by Ars Technica broadly associate Mini LED with FALD. Display expert Virey said, “I think that is broadly agreed across the industry that FALD is a key and mandatory feature in Mini LED backlights.” Bob O’Brien described Mini LED as an improvement on FALD technology, with more dimming zones. That expert view gives TCL’s criticism technical weight, but without an industry body empowered to set and enforce a common standard, it does not by itself determine whether Samsung’s label is legally or universally incorrect.

How is software dimming different from FALD?

Full-array local dimming uses independently controlled zones of LEDs behind the screen. By adjusting those zones separately, a television can dim darker parts of an image while keeping bright parts illuminated. More zones can allow finer control, although zone count alone does not predict picture quality: processing, panel behavior and blooming also matter.

Tom’s Guide reports that the M70H specification footnote describes “Supreme Mini LED Dimming” as software-based, not full-array hardware-based. Samsung confirmed to the publication that both the QN70H and M70H support software-based Supreme Mini LED Dimming. That is materially different from establishing that a TV has independently controlled full-array backlight zones: a software dimming feature is not, on its own, evidence of FALD hardware.

Samsung disputes TCL’s characterization. It told Tom’s Guide it would “vigorously defend against” the lawsuit and said it “stand[s] behind the quality and accuracy of our product descriptions.” TCL also argues that using the same “Supreme Mini LED Dimming” phrase for the M-series and higher-end Neo QLED products may suggest equivalent technology, even though the Neo QLED sets have Mini LED and FALD.

What do the reported contrast results show?

Independent measurements reported by Ars Technica illustrate why it is useful to examine a specific model rather than rely on the Mini LED label. RTINGS’ 2026 figures below are model-specific contrast results, not guarantees for other televisions or a complete account of picture quality.

The results support checking measurements and specific backlight implementation instead of assuming that a product name guarantees a certain level of contrast. They do not show that every Mini LED television will match these figures, or that contrast alone settles overall picture quality.

Is the Samsung M80H really Mini LED?

Samsung markets the M80H as Mini LED, so the answer under Samsung’s own product terminology is yes. Under the stricter technical understanding shared by the cited display experts—one that treats FALD as a defining feature—the label is open to a substantive challenge because Samsung describes the M80H’s dimming as software-based rather than full-array hardware-based.

That distinction is why the most accurate answer is qualified: the M80H’s label is disputed, and the lawsuit has not resolved whether Samsung’s usage is misleading or otherwise improper. No final ruling or settlement is identified here. The M80H’s measured contrast result and Samsung’s own description of its dimming can inform a technical assessment, but they do not settle the legal dispute.

Should you compare the TCL QM6K with the Samsung M80H?

Compare the exact versions available where you live, and check independent reviews and current specifications. The contrast results above make the QM6K a useful example of why model-level testing matters, but the cited result does not establish that it will be the better choice for every viewer. The evidence here does not provide a complete, like-for-like comparison of refresh rates, gaming features, current prices or warranty terms for these two televisions.

  • Backlight design: Verify whether the model uses full-array or edge-lit backlighting; do not infer it from “Mini LED” alone.
  • Dimming control: Look for independently controlled zones and, when available, a zone count for the exact model and size. TCL’s 2024 product figures advertised up to 1,500+ local-dimming zones for the QM7 and up to 5,000+ for the QM8; those are manufacturer “up to” figures, not measurements for the QM6K.
  • Picture performance: Check measured contrast, black uniformity, blooming, HDR peak brightness and highlight gradation in independent reviews. A high contrast result does not by itself establish strong HDR performance, as the QM6K example shows.
  • Use and value: Compare refresh rate, gaming features, price and warranty for the specific listings you are considering. These can vary by region, retailer and product configuration.

What the dispute does—and does not—establish

TCL’s challenge is technically credible because FALD and separately controlled zones are central to the way many display experts describe Mini LED. Samsung’s software-based dimming description for the M70H and the reported M80H contrast measurement give readers concrete reasons to look beyond the badge. But the terminology has no universally enforced definition, Samsung stands behind its descriptions, and the complaint remains an allegation rather than a ruling. For buyers, the practical test is the exact television’s backlight hardware, zone control and independently measured performance—not the label by itself.
