The key distinction is that Gemini can interpret your words and return a structured function call, but your app’s code must validate that proposal and make the change. Google’s documentation puts it plainly: “The model doesn’t execute the function itself. Extract the name and args and execute in your application.”
What happens when you talk through your day?
A voice-driven task app is a pipeline, not a single Gemini feature. It captures your words or audio, asks Gemini to identify task actions, and then uses application code to decide whether those actions should affect the task list.
- Capture the account. A client device can stream audio to the Gemini Live API, or an app can work from text. Google’s Live API documentation covers real-time audio, video, and text input, along with audio and transcription capabilities. The API does not mean Gemini automatically has microphone access: the app needs to capture and provide the input. See Google’s Live API capabilities guide and Live API setup guide.
- Interpret the account. The app can give Gemini a narrow set of tools, such as
create_task,update_task, andcomplete_task, with typed parameters. Gemini can return the proposed function name and arguments—for example, a task description and due date—rather than directly editing a list. - Validate and apply changes. Your application receives the proposed call, checks that its arguments are valid and allowed, then interacts with its own storage or task service. If the conversation needs a confirmation or follow-up, the app can send the operation’s result back to Gemini. Google describes this application-executed flow in its function-calling guide and function-calling codelab.
Function calls and structured output do different jobs
These approaches are related, but they are not interchangeable. Function calling lets the model propose an action for application code to carry out. Structured outputs constrain a response to a specified schema, which can be useful when the app needs a predictable final result for display or storage. Google explains the distinction in its guide to using tools with the Gemini API.
A task app may use both: function calls for operations such as creating or completing a task, and a schema for a final task record or a consistently formatted summary. Google’s November 5, 2025 developer blog describes expanded JSON Schema support and schema key ordering for Gemini 2.5 models and beyond. Check the current API documentation for the exact model and schema features available when implementing an app; support can vary by model and evolve over time. See Google’s structured outputs update.

Where the app needs safeguards
A model-generated task operation is a proposal, not proof that the task details are correct. The app should define a small, explicit contract for each operation and validate proposed values before changing anything. For ambiguous or consequential changes—such as completing the wrong task or assigning an uncertain deadline—the interface can ask the user to confirm or clarify. These are prudent product-design choices; Gemini function calling does not guarantee that an interpretation is correct or that an operation is safe.
- Keep each tool focused, with only the parameters the action needs.
- Check required fields, formats, and permissions in application code.
- Ask for clarification when the account does not identify a task or date clearly enough.
- Show the resulting changes so the user can catch mistakes.
What you need for voice input
The Live API documentation describes sending audio captured by a client device, such as a browser, as raw PCM data. It supports a voice interface, but does not establish that any particular hardware is mandatory. An app must implement audio capture and send that input; an external microphone is not a documented requirement. The setup details are in Google’s Live API SDK guide.

Can I tell Gemini about my day and have it make a to-do list?
Yes, if an app captures your speech, uses Gemini to interpret it, and has application code validate and carry out the resulting task operations. Gemini can supply the interpretation and proposed structured actions; the app remains responsible for microphone access, task storage, permissions, and the actual changes.
