US Arrests California Tech CEO Accused of Smuggling More Than $300 Million in GPU Servers to China

Federal prosecutors allege that Greg Lui used a California company and third-country shipping routes to send export-controlled GPU servers to China without required licenses. The DOJ announcement describes the charges, a 27-server example, and the unresolved case status.

Federal prosecutors allege that Greg Lui, a California technology-company owner, helped route export-controlled servers containing graphics processing units (GPUs) through Malaysia and Singapore for delivery to China without required U.S. licenses. The indictment alleges more than $300 million in servers were involved. The U.S. Department of Justice announced Lui’s arrest on October 1, 2026; the charges are allegations, not a conviction.

What is Greg Lui accused of?

The U.S. Department of Justice says Greg Lui, 38, also known as Yiu Kong Lui, of San Gabriel, California, was arrested under a three-count federal indictment returned on September 29, 2026. Prosecutors allege that he and co-conspirators used Earthmade Computer Inc.—a closely held technology company Lui owns and which is based in City of Industry, California—to buy high-end computer servers containing U.S.-manufactured GPUs and send them to China without required export licenses.

The indictment alleges the scheme involved more than $300 million worth of servers. That is the alleged value of the servers described in the smuggling charge, not a finding by a court. The DOJ release does not identify the GPU models or name their manufacturers, so it does not establish that the chips were made by Nvidia.

How did the alleged shipping route work?

According to the DOJ’s summary of the indictment, the servers were sent through Malaysia and Singapore before onward shipment to China. Prosecutors allege that purchase and shipping paperwork falsely represented permissible end users and destinations, concealing the goods’ alleged ultimate destination and bypassing the license requirement.

A 27-server example

In one example cited by the DOJ, Lui allegedly submitted a purchase order in January 2024 for 27 servers costing approximately $7,614,000. The servers were shipped from Los Angeles to Kuala Lumpur. A co-conspirator later allegedly told a Malaysian official that the 27 servers had been transshipped to a buyer based in China.

Payments described by prosecutors

The DOJ says Earthmade received more than $176 million from two Malaysia-based shipment companies between January and October 2024, according to the indictment’s summary. This payment figure is separate from the indictment’s allegation of more than $300 million in servers and from the approximately $7.614 million order for 27 servers; they measure different aspects of the alleged scheme and should not be added together.

What charges does the indictment contain?

The three counts allege conspiracy to violate the Export Control Reform Act and Export Administration Regulations, outbound smuggling, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The DOJ says that, if convicted on all charges, Lui could face statutory maximum prison terms of 20 years for the export-control conspiracy count, 10 years for smuggling, and 20 years for money-laundering conspiracy. These are potential legal maximums, not predicted or imposed sentences.

Has Lui been convicted, and what is known about the case status?

No conviction is established in the DOJ announcement. An indictment sets out prosecutors’ allegations; it does not prove them. The DOJ states that defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
