Gamers Are Still Upgrading PCs Despite High Component Prices

Gaming-hardware spending is forecast to keep growing, yet surveys show high prices are delaying upgrades. Here’s how to decide whether to buy, wait or change your plan.

Yes—PC gamers are still buying, building and upgrading in 2026, but higher component prices are changing who buys and how. Enthusiasts continue to spend, while many more price-sensitive buyers postpone purchases, change specifications, wait for promotions or consider refurbished hardware.

The clearest distinction is between demand and affordability: forecasts and company-reported sales signals point to continued spending, while surveys show that price increases are already making some buyers wait. That does not mean every upgrade is good value—or that waiting is always the better choice.

Are PC gamers still upgrading in 2026?

Yes. Jon Peddie Research’s March 2026 gaming-hardware model projects spending growth at a 10.67% compound annual growth rate through 2028, toward roughly $52 billion. That is a forecast of spending based on purchase intent, not a count of shipped PCs or proof that every buyer is spending more. Jon Peddie Research’s model also covers gaming PCs, DIY builds, upgrades and peripherals, so it is broader than graphics cards alone.

There is a counterpoint in the same market: higher prices are delaying purchases. In a representative German survey commissioned by Bitkom among 1,205 people aged 16 or older, including 663 gamers, 37% of gamers said they had postponed a gaming-hardware purchase in 2026 because prices had risen. Bitkom reported that 48% had planned a purchase, while 11% said higher prices had not affected them and they bought as planned. These figures describe surveyed gamers in Germany, not PC gamers worldwide. Bitkom’s survey findings show a market where people are still interested in buying, but a substantial share are not buying on their original schedule.

One company-reported signal points in the same direction: Corsair’s Q1 2025 investor presentation said new Nvidia and AMD graphics-card launches helped catalyze an upgrade cycle and cited 20% year-over-year growth in US NPD component and memory categories in March 2025. That is a historical, US-specific category figure reported by Corsair—not a measure of global sales or a current 2026 growth rate. Corsair’s investor presentation provides evidence of launch-driven demand, not a guarantee that a particular new card is worth its price.

Why are higher prices delaying upgrades?

Prices can change the timing and shape of an upgrade without eliminating the desire to buy. Bitkom found that memory was the category most often delayed: 16% of gamers surveyed postponed a memory purchase, compared with 8% for graphics cards and 6% for hard drives. Those are German survey results, not a worldwide ranking of component availability or price changes.

Bitkom gaming expert Felix Ansmann attributed the pressure in part to wider chip demand, saying: “Der KI-Boom hat die weltweite Nachfrage nach leistungsfähigen Chips und Halbleitern deutlich erhöht” (“The AI boom has significantly increased worldwide demand for powerful chips and semiconductors”). That statement offers context for pressure on semiconductor supply; it does not establish how much any specific PC component’s price has risen or how long a shortage will last.

Price sensitivity also does not always mean abandoning a purchase. A 2026 study of 462 consumer PC buyers across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific by The Futurum Group examined hypothetical 10%, 20% and 30% price increases. Its public summary describes buyers adapting through specification changes, delays, promotional timing and refurbished channels. It does not publish the full questionnaire tables on that page, so it supports those as observed response strategies, not a precise forecast of how many buyers will choose each one. The Futurum Group’s study summary covers consumer PC buyers broadly, not only gaming-PC owners.

Is a gaming PC upgrade worth it at today’s prices?

It can be, if a targeted change removes a real bottleneck at a cost you can justify. Compare the total cost and expected benefit of each path instead of treating the most expensive component as the automatic priority. The table is a decision framework, not a claim that any option is universally cheaper or faster.

Option When it may make sense What to check before buying Main trade-off
GPU-only upgrade The current graphics card is the main limitation and the existing CPU and power supply can support the replacement. Compatibility, power-supply capacity and connections, case clearance, cooling, and whether the rest of the system can make use of the added GPU performance. It avoids replacing a whole system, but a new card can expose a CPU or other system limitation; the card’s price alone is not the full cost.
Memory upgrade The existing PC is otherwise capable, and insufficient memory is limiting the work or games you actually run. Motherboard and processor compatibility, the current memory configuration, and the total price of the required kit. It may extend the useful life of a system, but Bitkom’s German survey found memory was the component category most often delayed because of higher prices.
Complete prebuilt PC A retailer’s complete-system price is competitive with the parts you would otherwise buy, particularly if retail GPU or memory pricing is inflated. Exact component models, power supply, cooling, upgrade options, warranty and support, plus delivery and any other costs. A system price can bundle components competitively, but a low headline price is not enough if specifications or support are unclear.
Refurbished or used hardware The discount is meaningful and the seller provides enough information and recourse to make the risk acceptable. Condition, return terms, warranty, seller support, and whether the component meets the system’s compatibility and power needs. A lower purchase price may come with less certainty or support than a new item; compare the actual protections, not just the sticker price.
Wait and monitor promotions The current system still meets your needs and the proposed upgrade is not time-sensitive. How much a delay affects you, the price at which you would buy, and whether a promotion changes the all-in cost. You preserve your budget for now, but a future discount or improved availability is not guaranteed.

Should you buy a graphics card now or wait?

Buy now when the current PC is preventing you from doing something you care about, you have found a suitable card at a price you accept, and the rest of the system can support it. Wait when the upgrade is discretionary, current prices exceed your personal limit, or you have not yet checked whether the graphics card is actually the main constraint.

Before deciding, compare more than one route to the same outcome:

  • Set a total budget. Include any supporting changes the card requires, such as a power supply, cooling or a case that can accommodate it.
  • Check the platform. A GPU-only upgrade can be attractive when the CPU and power supply are adequate. If they are not, compare the cost of those changes with a complete-system price.
  • Compare like with like. Check the exact component models and support terms in a prebuilt against the parts you would buy separately. Do not assume that a prebuilt is cheaper—or more expensive—without comparing the full configuration.
  • Choose a personal buy price. If a card costs more than you consider worthwhile, waiting for a promotion is one available tactic, not a promise that prices will fall by a particular amount or date.

What is the best upgrade for an older gaming PC?

There is no single best component without knowing what is limiting the machine. Start with the problem you want to solve—such as graphics performance, memory capacity or broader system responsiveness—then identify the part most directly connected to it. A GPU-only upgrade is a sensible candidate when the graphics card is the bottleneck and the existing CPU, power supply and cooling are sufficient. A memory upgrade can make sense when memory is the constraint and the rest of the system remains capable, but current price pressure makes its cost worth checking carefully.

  1. Describe the actual limitation. Identify what feels inadequate in the games or tasks you use, rather than upgrading simply because a new component has launched.
  2. Check the whole system around the proposed part. Verify compatibility and any supporting requirements, including power, cooling and available space.
  3. Compare targeted and full-system costs. Include memory and other required components, and consider a prebuilt if individual component prices make a DIY route unattractive.
  4. Decide whether the improvement justifies the price. If it does not, changing specifications, watching for promotions or evaluating refurbished hardware are alternatives documented in Futurum’s 2026 buyer study.

What the market signals do—and do not—tell you

The evidence supports two conclusions at once: PC gaming hardware remains a substantial spending market, and higher prices are already changing purchase behavior. It does not prove that every category is growing at the same rate, that retail prices will soon decline, or that a specific upgrade is good value for a particular PC. Jon Peddie Research’s figure is a spending forecast; Bitkom’s delay figures come from German gamers; Corsair’s NPD figure is a company-reported US measure from March 2025; and Steam’s survey represents voluntary participants.

For an individual buyer, the useful question is therefore not simply whether gamers are still upgrading. It is whether the upgrade solves a problem in your own system at a total cost you are willing to pay. When the answer is no, delay or a changed specification is a rational response—not evidence that PC gaming demand has disappeared.
