Use the official app or movie store where the title is available, open its details page, choose Download, and test playback with Wi‑Fi and cellular data turned off. Whether that button appears depends on the movie’s rights, your plan, country, app, and device.
The quickest legal method
- Install or update the provider’s official app.
- Sign in to the account with the subscription, rental, or purchase.
- Connect to reliable Wi‑Fi and check free storage.
- Open the movie’s details page and select Download or the downward-arrow icon.
- Choose a quality setting if offered, then wait for completion.
- Open the app’s Downloads area and start the movie once online.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi and cellular data, then test playback before travelling.
Offline downloads are normally encrypted, app-controlled copies—not ordinary MP4 files you can move to another device.
What “download a movie” means
Subscription-service download
Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max and Prime Video may let an eligible subscriber save a temporary copy. It generally plays only in that service’s app, can expire, may require periodic internet checks, and can disappear when a title leaves the catalog, a plan changes, or an account is signed out.
Rental or purchase download
A rental has a viewing deadline and may be limited to one device. A purchase is usually redownloadable within its storefront ecosystem, but it is still account- and platform-dependent—not necessarily a DRM-free file. Google says purchased videos can be downloaded on up to five devices and rented videos on one device at a time (Google Play help). YouTube states the same limits and says YouTube Premium is not required for purchased movies on supported iOS and Android devices (YouTube help).

Ordinary downloadable video file
This exists only when the copyright owner or service explicitly supplies a normal file. Do not use pirate downloaders, cracked apps, torrents, screen recorders or DRM-removal tools; they create malware, account, legal and quality risks.
Which major services support offline movies?
Catalogs, plans and device support change, so confirm the Download control in the app for the specific title.
| Service | Offline-download position | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Selected Android, iPhone, iPad, Chromebook and Amazon Fire apps. | Rights and regional exclusions are common; certain ad-supported configurations have a provider-stated 15-download-per-device monthly limit (Netflix). |
| Disney+ | Selected iPhone/iPad, Apple Vision Pro, Android phones/tablets, Fire tablets and Meta Quest. | Eligible Premium plan or bundle required; current help says no downloads on computers, Windows 10/11 tablets or TV-connected devices; up to 10 supported mobile devices (Disney+). |
| Hulu | Official offline-download feature. | Title, plan, device and current Hulu rules determine availability (Hulu). |
| Max | iPhone/iPad/iPod touch, Android phones/tablets and Fire tablets. | Max’s help page lists Basic with Ads at zero downloads, Standard at 30 and Platinum at 100 account downloads; some NBCUniversal, Sony and Lionsgate titles are excluded (Max). |
| Prime Video | Verify the title and device in the Prime Video app. | Eligibility varies by title, channel rights, device and territory. |

Instructions by device
iPhone or iPad
Install the official app, sign in, open the movie, tap Download, choose quality, and confirm it under Downloads. Disney+ supports selected Apple mobile devices but not computers or TV-connected devices (Disney+ device guidance).

Android phone or tablet
Use the provider app, open the title, tap Download, select quality or storage options, and verify completion in Downloads. For a Google purchase, use Google TV/Google Play Movies & TV → Library → title → Download.
Amazon Fire tablet
Use the service’s official Fire app and its Download control. A Fire tablet does not make every service or title downloadable.
Chromebook
Netflix lists Google Chromebook support, subject to app, title and model availability (Netflix). Chromebook support does not guarantee that every service offers browser or Android-app downloads.

Mac or Windows PC
Browser streaming does not imply offline storage. Apple generally supports downloading purchased movies to Mac or Windows PC (Apple), while Disney+ currently says computer downloads are unavailable (Disney+). Check the specific desktop app or storefront.
Smart TV, Roku, console or streaming stick
Streaming capability does not equal download capability. Download to a supported phone or tablet unless the provider explicitly documents offline support for that hardware.
Choose quality, storage and network settings
- Low/standard: fastest and smallest; suitable for phones or several travel titles.
- Medium: a storage-and-picture-quality compromise.
- High: better on tablets and larger screens, but slower and much larger.
Disney+ documents Standard, Medium and High choices and says higher quality uses more storage and takes longer (Disney+). Download on Wi‑Fi, charge the device, leave spare storage, and avoid mobile data charges noted by Google (Google). Delete watched titles inside the app.

Why the Download button is missing
- The movie is licensed for streaming but not offline use.
- Your subscription tier does not include downloads.
- The device, operating system or app is unsupported.
- The title is unavailable in your country.
- The account or entitlement is incorrect.
- Storage is insufficient.
- The app is outdated or experiencing an error.
- A device or download limit has been reached.
Netflix cites licensing, exclusivity, regional factors, cost, popularity and studio arrangements as reasons a streamable title may lack downloads (Netflix). Disney+ lists unsupported devices, ineligible plans and title restrictions (Disney+); Max lists studio exclusions (Max).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long do offline downloads last?
They are not automatically permanent. A service may require an active subscription, periodic reconnection, or playback before a rental deadline. A title can expire, leave the catalog, become invalid after a plan change, or be deleted when you sign out. Disney+ requires an internet connection at least every 30 days, says some content expires sooner, and removes downloads after logout (Disney+). Netflix also documents title-specific redownload restrictions after a download limit (Netflix).
Subscription download or purchase?
| Your need | Usually better choice |
|---|---|
| One trip or a movie already included | Subscription download |
| Title absent from your subscriptions | Authorized rental or purchase |
| Repeated viewing over a long period | Consider an authorized purchase |
| Computer playback | Check storefront and operating-system support first |
| Transferable file | Only an explicitly authorized DRM-free download |
Apple says purchased content can generally be downloaded to compatible devices but warns that rights changes can affect future access or redownloads; download purchases to a device you control (Apple).

Fix a failed or incomplete download
- Check free storage and network strength.
- Pause and resume, then force-close and reopen the app.
- Restart the device and update the app.
- Delete the partial title and try again at lower quality.
- Confirm the title, plan, account, region and device limit.
- Contact the provider if those checks are correct.
These steps align with Disney’s troubleshooting guidance (Disney+ troubleshooting).
Can you copy a streaming download to USB?
Usually no. Protected app downloads are managed for in-app playback and are not intended to appear as transferable files in Files, Finder or Downloads. Copying app data or bypassing DRM may violate service terms and applicable copyright law. Use the official app, choose a storefront that supports your device, buy physical media, or obtain an explicitly authorized downloadable file instead.
