Yes—but with an important limit. You can install Steam, authorize multiple computers and download your purchased games on each. Steam Guard says there is no limit to the number of authorized machines. However, one Steam account is not intended for two people to play simultaneously; concurrent use can end a session or produce an “Invalid Steam UserID Ticket” error.
The difference between installing, signing in and playing
These are separate actions:
- Installing Steam: You may install the client on multiple computers.
- Installing a game: Sign in on another computer and download any game activated on your account; you do not buy it again for your own second PC. Steam explains this at its account-use FAQ.
- Being authorized: Steam Guard does not set a two-computer cap. Its guidance says there is no limit to authorized machines: Steam Guard FAQ.
- Playing: The restriction is concurrent use of the same account, not the number of installations.
Steam may remember or authorize your account on more than one personal computer. That does not make simultaneous gameplay by multiple users supported.
How to install your library on a second computer
- Install the official Steam client on the second computer.
- Open Steam and sign in with the same account.
- Complete the Steam Guard code or other verification requested for the new device.
- Open Library and select the game.
- Choose Install, select the library drive or folder, and confirm.
- Let the download, installation and required updates finish.
- Launch the game once normally.
The title should appear in the second computer’s Library after you sign in. The second installation can have different graphics settings, configuration files and local data. Your computer must also meet that game’s hardware and operating-system requirements.
Can both computers play at the same time?
Not as two supported active game sessions on one account. Steam’s account-use guidance says one account is licensed for its owner and does not support multiple users playing simultaneously, whether they launch the same game or different games. Depending on the game, client state and network conditions, one computer may be disconnected or asked to sign in again. Steam identifies “Invalid Steam UserID Ticket” as a possible result; see Steam’s account-use guidance.

A temporary instance in which two games appear to run is not a reliable or permitted sharing method. Close the game and Steam on the computer you are not using before starting a session on the other one.
Dedicated-server edge case
If one machine runs a dedicated server while another plays, Steam may still treat that as simultaneous account use. Steam says a separate Steam account may be needed for a dedicated server. The exact server setup depends on the game.

What if two people want to play together?
Use separate Steam accounts rather than sharing one login. Steam explicitly advises users not to share account credentials: Steam account-security guidance. Sharing a password can expose payment information, inventory, saved credentials and personal data; activity by the other person can also put the account at risk.
For household sharing, consider Steam Families where it is available and the game qualifies. Steam Families supports up to six members and keeps each person’s achievements and saves on that person’s account: Steam Families FAQ.

Family members can play games from the family library at the same time in supported circumstances. Do not assume that one purchased copy always permits two people to play the same title simultaneously: check the game’s sharing eligibility and whether the family library has enough copies.
Saves, Steam Cloud and achievements
Achievements
Achievements belong to the Steam account, so they are not tied to a particular computer. With Steam Families, each member earns achievements on their own account.

Save files
Cross-computer progress depends on the game. A title may use Steam Cloud, local-only files, a third-party launcher or a separate publisher account. Steam ownership alone does not guarantee that every save will appear on both computers.
- Confirm that Steam Cloud is supported and enabled for the game.
- Back up important local saves before switching machines.
- If Steam shows a Cloud conflict, compare the local and cloud timestamps before choosing which version to keep.
- Mods, altered files and different game branches can change where or how saves are stored.
How to prepare the second PC for offline play
Offline Mode must be prepared while Steam is online. Follow Steam’s instructions at the Offline Mode FAQ:

- Start Steam while connected to the internet.
- Make sure the game is fully updated.
- Launch the game once online and complete any first-run setup.
- In Steam settings, make sure “Don’t save account credentials on this computer” is not selected.
- Open the Steam menu and choose Go Offline.
Offline Mode will not make an online-only game work. Multiplayer, games requiring an active connection, some external launchers and Steam features that need the network may remain unavailable. Updates wait until Steam reconnects, and a later login request requires the computer to go online again.
Security on borrowed, shared or old computers
Do not save your credentials on a public or untrusted computer. Keyloggers and other malware can capture a password or Steam Guard code. When finished, fully exit Steam; minimizing the window is not the same as signing out.
If a computer was sold, repaired, borrowed or used by someone else, review authorized devices in Steam’s account-security or Steam Guard area and deauthorize machines you no longer trust. Steam says deauthorization removes a computer’s Steam Guard authorization so it is treated as a new device at its next sign-in: Steam Guard FAQ. If access may have been unauthorized, change the Steam password and secure the email account attached to Steam as well.
Fixes for common two-computer problems
Steam Guard keeps requesting a code
A new or deauthorized computer can be treated as an unrecognized device. Complete the verification, and avoid saving credentials on a machine you do not control.

“Invalid Steam UserID Ticket” appears
- Close the game and Steam on both computers.
- Wait briefly for the old session to clear.
- Restart Steam on the computer you intend to use and sign in again.
- If the error continues, change the password and review authorized devices.
- For a dedicated server, follow Steam’s separate-account guidance.
The game is in the Library but will not launch
- Check that installation and updates are complete.
- Confirm the second computer meets the game’s requirements.
- Check whether the title requires an online connection, external launcher or third-party account.
- Make sure the same account is not being used to launch a game elsewhere.
Saves are missing or outdated
Check Steam Cloud support, local save locations, launcher accounts and any conflict dialog. Restore a backup rather than guessing when local and cloud timestamps differ.
