For a current installation that automatically rotates Bing-related images, use Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper app—not an old installer from a download mirror.
What Bing Desktop originally did
Bing Desktop combined several features in one Windows utility:

- Desktop search without opening a browser.
- An optional search bar docked at the top of the desktop or shown on the taskbar.
- News, weather, trending stories, images and videos.
- Automatic use of the Bing homepage image as the Windows background.
- Access to recent Bing images.
Microsoft’s legacy documentation names the wallpaper control “Make the Bing homepage image your desktop background.” It describes the current image and the previous nine daily images, while warning that licensing restrictions could make images differ between Bing.com and the desktop application.

No, not for a new installation. Microsoft’s current consumer download pages promote Bing Wallpaper. The legacy help page remains online, so old articles and search results may still call the utility “Bing Desktop,” but that does not verify that an official, current Bing Desktop installer is available.

Do not download a renamed Bing Desktop executable from an unofficial mirror. An old file may be unsigned, modified, incompatible with current Windows, or unsafe. The current Microsoft flow uses an installer named BingWallpaper.exe or BingWallpaperInstaller.exe.
What Bing Wallpaper does
Bing Wallpaper is a lightweight Windows app that runs from the notification area (system tray). It downloads a new desktop background each day using images that have appeared on the Bing homepage, and it lets you browse image information. Microsoft also notes that the app may display in-app promotional offers.
It is related to the old wallpaper function, but do not assume it always displays the exact image currently visible on Bing.com; licensing restrictions can affect availability.

How to download and install Bing Wallpaper
- Open Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper page, or its official Bing.com download flow.
- Select Install now, Get it now or the equivalent download control.
- Save the downloaded
BingWallpaper.exeorBingWallpaperInstaller.exe. - Open the file and select Install now.
- Select Finish when setup completes.
- Open the Bing icon in the Windows system tray to browse images and access the app’s controls.
Microsoft’s installation instructions describe the same download-and-run process and provide a manual-download option if the automatic download does not start.
Review browser settings during setup
The installer may ask whether you want to try Bing as your browser homepage and search engine. This is separate from the wallpaper feature. Read the setup screen carefully and clear or decline any option you do not want; Bing Wallpaper can be used without intentionally changing those browser preferences.
Let the app change your wallpaper each day
After installation, leave Bing Wallpaper running and look for its icon in the system tray. The app needs an internet connection to retrieve or update the daily image. If you close or disable it, another wallpaper manager takes control, or Windows policy enforces a fixed background, the image may not change.

To stop automatic changes, use the Bing Wallpaper tray menu to disable the wallpaper feature or exit the app. You can also remove it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Windows compatibility and support status
Microsoft publishes Bing Wallpaper as compatible with Windows 7 and above, but that is a product-page claim rather than a guarantee for every build, edition or managed PC. The app does not run on Android or iOS.
Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft support on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 computer may run the app while the operating system itself no longer receives Microsoft’s normal free security fixes or technical support. Windows 7 users should be especially cautious with legacy installers even though older Microsoft software once supported that operating system.

Download only today’s Bing image
You do not need an app to save a single image:
- Open Bing.
- Hover over the image caption or information area.
- Select Download today’s image, when that option is offered.
- In Windows, right-click the downloaded file and choose Set as desktop background.
Microsoft says most daily images can be downloaded, but licensing restrictions prevent downloads of some images. In those cases Bing may suggest Bing Wallpaper instead. You can also set a file manually through Settings > Personalization > Background > Picture; see Microsoft’s Windows background instructions.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Windows Spotlight, which can show a new image from around the world each day without installing a separate wallpaper app. It is related to Bing imagery, but it is not guaranteed to match the exact Bing homepage image.

- Select Personalization.
- Select Background.
- Under Personalize your background, choose Windows spotlight.
Availability and controls can vary with Windows edition, organization policy and device management. Microsoft’s Windows Spotlight documentation describes additional managed-device restrictions.

Troubleshoot common problems
The installer does not download
- Confirm you started from Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper domain or Bing.com.
- Check the browser’s Downloads list and blocked-download notices.
- Use the manual-download control on the official instruction page.
- Avoid mirror sites offering renamed executables.
The wallpaper does not change
- Confirm the Bing Wallpaper tray icon is present and the app is running.
- Check internet access.
- Check Windows startup settings and make sure the app was not disabled.
- Disable competing wallpaper tools, slideshows or OEM customization utilities.
- Check whether organization policy enforces a fixed background.
The image differs from Bing.com
This can be expected. Microsoft documents licensing-related differences between images shown on the website and those available to desktop software.
Bing changed browser preferences
Review the installer’s homepage and search-engine options, then restore your preferred settings in your browser if necessary. Those options are not required for daily wallpaper rotation.
Windows Spotlight is missing
A managed PC, Windows edition restriction, policy setting or confusion between lock-screen and desktop Spotlight can explain the missing option. Check the edition and organization policies before treating it as an app failure.
Several wallpaper tools are installed
Use one automatic wallpaper controller at a time. Bing Wallpaper, Windows Spotlight, Wallpaper Engine, OEM utilities and slideshow settings can overwrite one another.

Bottom line
If your goal is the old “Bing Desktop” behavior—an automatically changing Bing-style desktop image—install Microsoft’s current Bing Wallpaper app from an official Microsoft page. Use Bing’s homepage download for a single image, Windows Spotlight when you want a built-in alternative, and avoid unverified legacy installers.
