Register a .SHOP Domain With Bluehost: Costs, Steps, and Store Setup

Bluehost supports .shop domains, but the domain is only your address. Follow the exact registration, pricing, connection, transfer, renewal, and troubleshooting steps before launching your store.

Yes. Bluehost currently lets you search for and register a .shop domain through its domain-search flow or Bluehost Portal. The domain is only your web address: you still need hosting or an ecommerce platform, store software, payments, shipping, and email to operate a store. Before paying, compare the exact first-year and renewal prices shown for your name.

Is .shop a good extension for an online store?

.shop is a generic top-level domain designed to signal shopping or commerce. It is not tied to a country, and it can suit product retailers, digital sellers, subscription brands, creators, dropshippers, service businesses, and local stores with an online presence.

Its main benefit is clarity in branding: a name such as oakandember.shop immediately suggests a storefront. Bluehost says the extension does not directly improve search rankings, so choose it for memorability and customer recognition rather than an SEO promise.

.shop versus .com

  • Choose .shop when the business is clearly commerce-focused, the .com is unavailable or expensive, or the .shop version is shorter and easier to remember.
  • Choose .com when the brand may expand beyond retail, customers already know the business by a .com, or a reasonably priced .com is available.

Neither extension automatically establishes trademark rights or legitimacy. Check trademarks, company-name conflicts, and matching social handles before registering.

Is .shop available through Bluehost?

Bluehost advertises .shop registration and provides a search field for checking a specific name (Bluehost’s .shop page). Availability is name-specific:

Status What it means
Available You can normally register it immediately, subject to checkout validation.
Premium The name is available but may cost substantially more than a promotional price.
Unavailable Another registrant controls it.
Backorder Bluehost may attempt to acquire it if it is released; this is not immediate registration.

A search result is not a completed purchase. A name can be taken or repriced before payment is submitted.

How much does a .shop domain cost at Bluehost?

Bluehost’s current .shop landing page advertises a broad range of $2–$30 per year, depending on the name, promotions, and premium status (Bluehost .shop pricing page). Treat that as a range, not a quote. The checkout total and your account’s renewal center are authoritative for your region and domain.

Cost item What to check
Initial registration The exact term and price displayed for the selected name.
Renewal The post-promotion annual rate; Bluehost says included domains renew at the then-current rate.
Premium charge Whether the name is excluded from promotional or free-domain offers.
Privacy Bluehost’s registration guide says privacy is included in the flow, but availability and the final line item can vary by registry and account; confirm the cart.
Tax EU customers may have VAT added separately.
Hosting and add-ons These are separate products and can increase the checkout total.

Do not assume .shop is free with a hosting plan. Bluehost’s published eligible free-domain list includes .store but does not list .shop. Any free-domain offer is term- and promotion-specific; Bluehost describes current offers involving 12- or 36-month hosting terms and redemption within up to 90 days (Bluehost domain-pricing guidance).

Registration is generally nonrefundable once completed. Bluehost says a registered domain cannot be canceled for a refund, so verify the spelling, extension, registrant details, term, privacy selection, and renewal price before submitting payment (Bluehost registration guide).

Prepare before you register

  • Choose a short, pronounceable name that is easy to spell aloud.
  • Prepare a backup name or extension in case the preferred name is unavailable or premium-priced.
  • Check trademarks and business-name conflicts; domain availability is not trademark clearance.
  • Use accurate registrant contact information and an email account you will keep accessible.
  • Decide whether Bluehost will host the store or only register the domain for Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, BigCommerce, Squarespace, or another provider.
  • Plan an address such as [email protected] and note which provider will handle email.

How to register a .shop domain with Bluehost

Route A: Bluehost’s website

  1. Go to Bluehost, open For Business, and choose Domain Name Search.
  2. Enter the desired name with the .shop extension and submit the search.
  3. If the result is available, select Continue. If it is premium, inspect the premium price; if unavailable, consider an alternative or backorder.
  4. Review the cart, privacy or protection options, hosting, email, and other add-ons.
  5. Create a Bluehost account or sign in.
  6. Choose the billing term and enter billing information.
  7. Read the final spelling, extension, ownership details, registration term, and renewal information.
  8. Click Submit Payment.
  9. Complete any email verification Bluehost sends after registration.

Route B: An existing Bluehost account

  1. Sign in to the Bluehost Portal.
  2. Select Domains from the left-hand menu and choose Add a Domain.
  3. Select Get a brand new domain, search for the .shop name, and complete checkout.

Bluehost also documents a Marketplace → Domains route. Labels can differ for legacy accounts or different hosting products.

What happens after purchase?

You should receive an order confirmation and a registration-verification request. The domain then appears in the Bluehost Portal for management. Registration makes Bluehost the registrar managing the name; it does not create a website.

  • Hosting supplies the server that runs a site.
  • DNS records direct web traffic, email, and verification services.
  • Website connection assigns the domain to a particular site.
  • SSL enables HTTPS after the site and DNS are correctly configured.
  • Email requires separate mail hosting and correctly preserved MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records.

Enable auto-renewal, keep the payment method current, and retain access to the registrant email. Bluehost says failed renewal attempts trigger email notices; an expired domain may be held for up to 30 days as a courtesy before redemption. Its cited guidance lists a $99 redemption fee, but extension-specific prices and deadlines should be checked in the renewal center (Bluehost domain-pricing guidance).

Connect the .shop domain to Bluehost hosting

A domain purchased with Bluehost hosting may be associated automatically with the default site. For an existing account or another site, use the Portal connection controls:

  1. Log in to the Bluehost Portal and open Domains.
  2. Select the domain.
  3. In the Connections panel, find the relevant service and click Add beside the website or hosting service.
  4. Select the correct site or hosting plan and complete the connection.

The exact controls vary by account, hosting product, and whether the domain is new or already connected. Bluehost documents this workflow in its domain-assignment guide.

Bluehost cites approximately 24–48 hours for nameserver propagation. That is a typical window, not a guarantee; different DNS resolvers may show changes sooner or later.

Use a Bluehost .shop domain with Shopify or another platform

You do not need Bluehost hosting to use a domain registered at Bluehost with Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, or Squarespace. Bluehost lists compatibility with these platforms, but compatibility does not mean automatic configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create the store and add a custom domain in the ecommerce platform’s settings.
  2. Copy the platform’s required DNS records or nameserver instructions.
  3. In Bluehost DNS management, add or edit exactly those records, or delegate nameservers if the platform instructs you to do so.
  4. Verify the domain in the platform.
  5. Wait for propagation, then confirm HTTPS, the preferred canonical domain, and redirects.

Record existing DNS entries first. Changing nameservers can remove or bypass MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, payment, and marketing-platform records. In some setups, nameservers handle the website while individual host records continue to handle email. Bluehost explains these alternatives in its connection guidance.

Connect an existing domain without transferring it

Hosting and registrar management are separate. You can keep an existing .shop registration where it is and connect it to Bluehost:

  1. Sign in to Bluehost, open Domains, choose Add a Domain, and select Connect an external domain.
  2. Enter the domain and add it.
  3. Select it, open Connections, click Add in the Website card, choose the hosting plan, and connect it.
  4. At the current registrar, point nameservers to Bluehost or add the specific DNS records Bluehost requires.

Use Bluehost’s external-domain instructions for the account-specific screens. This option is usually preferable when the current registrar has better renewal pricing, the domain is in a transfer lock, or business email is already configured there.

Should you transfer an existing .shop domain to Bluehost?

A transfer moves registrar management; it is not required for Bluehost hosting. Bluehost generally says a transfer includes a one-year renewal, but verify the exact .shop price and terms at checkout (Bluehost transfer page).

Typical transfer prerequisites

  • The domain is eligible and not within a registry transfer-lock period.
  • It is unlocked at the current registrar.
  • You have the authorization or EPP code.
  • Privacy or transfer restrictions are disabled when required.
  • The registrant email can approve transfer messages.

Bluehost says transfers typically take 5–7 days, although approval, locks, and registry conditions can change the timing. A newly registered domain may also face a 60-day transfer restriction. Keep DNS and email records documented throughout the move.

Common problems and fixes

The name looked available but checkout failed

Someone may have registered it first, the name may be premium or restricted, the cart price may have changed, or the spelling may contain an unsupported character. Recheck the ASCII spelling, inspect premium status, and try an alternate name. Do not treat search availability as registration.

The domain is registered but the site does not load

  • Confirm the domain is active and verification is complete.
  • Check that it is connected to the intended Bluehost website.
  • Verify nameservers or DNS records.
  • Confirm the site’s primary domain and redirects.
  • Allow for DNS propagation and SSL issuance.

Bluehost lists incorrect nameservers, propagation, domain conflicts, pending transfers, and domain-not-found errors among common connection causes (connection troubleshooting).

Email stopped working

The likely cause is missing or replaced MX, SPF, DKIM, or DMARC records. Restore the email provider’s required records, avoid deleting verification entries, and test both sending and receiving. Do not change nameservers without first recording the current DNS zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The spelling is wrong

Bluehost says a registered domain cannot be edited. Register the correct name separately if it is available; the original registration remains subject to its terms and cost.

The domain expired

The website and email can stop working, auto-renewal may fail, and redemption can add a substantial fee. Check Bluehost’s renewal center for the extension-specific deadline rather than relying on a generic grace-period assumption.

Bluehost or a separate registrar?

Option Advantages Cautions
Bluehost domain only One account and an easy path to Bluehost hosting. Check renewal, privacy, premium, tax, and add-on pricing.
Bluehost plus WooCommerce WordPress, hosting, DNS, and store tools in one ecosystem. Requires more WordPress maintenance than a fully hosted ecommerce service.
Bluehost domain plus Shopify Keep registration at Bluehost while using Shopify’s hosted store. DNS must be configured correctly; Bluehost hosting may be unnecessary.
Separate registrar plus separate platform Potentially lower renewals, independent DNS, and easier host changes. Support and management are split across dashboards.

For comparison, Namecheap’s .shop page displayed a promotional $0.98 registration price and a listed $38.98 transfer price when captured; promotions and renewal terms can change (Namecheap .shop page). Compare like-for-like renewal, privacy, transfer, and DNS terms rather than only the introductory fee.

Recommendation

Bluehost is a sensible choice when you want domain registration and Bluehost hosting, WordPress, DNS, and support under one account. A separate registrar is often more flexible for Shopify or another hosted platform, and may suit buyers focused on long-term renewal economics. In either case, the decisive check is the final checkout total and the renewal price for the exact .shop name, followed by a careful DNS and email plan.
