Error 0x8007010B usually appears when Windows Update cannot use an update file, folder, download cache, or servicing component. The code alone does not prove one specific cause, so use a staged repair: restart and run Microsoft’s troubleshooter, reset the update cache, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then investigate storage, network/security conflicts, or the individual KB package.
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; a Windows 10 PC may still receive updates only through an applicable extended-support, managed, or other eligible program. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter guidance for current support details.
What error 0x8007010B means
You may see the code in Windows Update history after a cumulative, feature, or servicing update fails, or in a repeating “Retry” and “Install failed” cycle. It can also occur in other Windows deployment contexts. Microsoft does not publish a dedicated consumer diagnosis that assigns every occurrence to one cause, so treat it as an update installation or download failure associated with required files, folders, or servicing state—not proof that one particular directory is corrupt.
Before troubleshooting, record the failed KB number, Windows edition and version, architecture (x64, x86, or ARM64), whether failure happens during download, installation, or restart, and any accompanying message. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history (or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history on Windows 10).

Before changing Windows
- Save work and restart once.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB drives and peripherals.
- Ensure the system drive has adequate free space and back up important files.
- Use an administrator account.
- Do not interrupt a BIOS, firmware, or feature-update restart.
- On a work or school PC, get approval before changing WSUS policy, security software, or update settings.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Select Run beside Windows Update.
- Restart when prompted, then open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Microsoft also directs current Windows 11 users to the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. The exact interface can change; Microsoft’s troubleshooter page has the current route.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart, return to Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
A troubleshooter result saying that a problem was fixed is not proof that the failure cannot return. If the same KB fails again, continue below.
2. Reset Windows Update components
This is a controlled, reversible reset. It renames update stores rather than deleting system directories. Windows will recreate them, but previously downloaded update data may need to be downloaded again and local update history may be rebuilt.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator (search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator).
- Run each command separately:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptsvc
Clear the Background Intelligent Transfer Service job database:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoftNetworkDownloaderqmgr*.dat"
Rename the update stores:
Ren %Systemroot%SoftwareDistributionDataStore DataStore.bak
Ren %Systemroot%SoftwareDistributionDownload Download.bak
Ren %Systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.bak
Start the services again:
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start cryptsvc
- Restart Windows and select Check for updates.
These steps follow Microsoft’s documented component-reset procedure in Additional resources for Windows Update. If a rename reports “access denied” or “file in use,” a service did not stop completely; restart and retry rather than force-deleting active servicing files.

3. Repair Windows servicing files with DISM and SFC
Open an administrator Command Prompt and run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
After it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and retry Windows Update. Microsoft explains why DISM should precede SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
- DISM completed successfully: continue with SFC.
- SFC found no integrity violations: protected system files look intact, although the update cache, disk, policy, or servicing state may still be faulty.
- SFC repaired files: restart and retry.
- SFC could not perform the requested operation: retry in Safe Mode or proceed to a repair source.
- DISM cannot obtain repair files: use a matching installation source, replacing the example path:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
4. Check storage, networking, security, and disk health
Free space
Insufficient space can block updates. Microsoft cites minimums of 16 GB for a 32-bit OS and 20 GB for a 64-bit OS for the upgrade scenario described in its guidance; those figures are not a guarantee for every update. Keep substantially more space free when possible. See Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →VPN, proxy, and managed networks
Temporarily disconnect a VPN and retry. Proxy, firewall, DNS filtering, or WSUS policy can interfere on managed networks; do not bypass organizational controls—contact the administrator instead.
Third-party security software
Endpoint protection can block update operations. Prefer temporarily pausing protection or using a clean boot. Fully uninstall security software only if you know how to reinstall it and retain any required license information, as Microsoft cautions in its update troubleshooting guidance.

Disk errors and pending restarts
Restart normally before more invasive work. If disk errors are suspected and important data is protected, run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the scan for the next restart. Do not treat this command as a substitute for backing up a drive that may be failing.
5. Install a known failed KB manually
Use the Microsoft Update Catalog only when Windows Update identifies a specific KB number.
- Open the Microsoft Update Catalog.
- Search for the exact KB.
- Match the Windows product and version, architecture, edition/build where relevant, and package type (cumulative, preview, or servicing-stack).
- Download the
.msupackage, run it as administrator, and restart if requested.
The Catalog is a targeted workaround, not a general replacement for automatic updating. A wrong architecture may not install; a package may require prerequisites or be superseded. If the same error occurs in the standalone installer, the problem is more likely deeper servicing, system-file, storage, or policy trouble than only a download cache.
6. Use a clean boot to find software conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with minimal drivers and startup programs. Try it when the failure began after installing antivirus, VPN, backup, system-tuning, or disk-management software, or when the reset and repairs did not help. If the update succeeds, re-enable startup items and services in groups until the conflict is identified, then return Windows to Normal startup. A clean boot isolates interference; it does not repair a damaged component store.

- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
7. Collect logs for persistent failures
For repeated failures, collect the KB number, Windows version/build, update-history details, DISM and SFC results, and whether both Windows Update and the standalone .msu fail. Review C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log and applicable Windows Update logs around the failure time. Search for the KB, 0x8007010B, Failed, or Error instead of reading every line. Microsoft identifies CBS.log as a key servicing source in its Windows Update failure troubleshooting.
8. When to repair or reinstall Windows
Escalate to an in-place repair installation with matching Windows media when multiple unrelated updates fail, DISM cannot repair the image, SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired corruption, the standalone package also fails, or Windows services and Settings are malfunctioning. Choose the installation path that explicitly preserves files and applications, and back up first.
A full Reset or clean installation is a last resort: depending on the option, it can remove applications, settings, and files. Managed devices should go to IT, especially where WSUS or endpoint policies apply.

| Situation | Next step | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| First occurrence | Restart, troubleshooter, retry | May not clear a persistent cache problem |
| Same KB fails repeatedly | Reset update components | Update data is downloaded again |
| Several Windows components malfunction | DISM, then SFC | DISM may need a matching source |
| Failure only with VPN/security active | Temporarily disable or clean boot | Restore protection afterward |
| Exact KB known | Use Microsoft Update Catalog | Match version and architecture exactly |
| Windows Update and .msu both fail | Logs, disk checks, repair installation | Suggests deeper servicing or OS damage |
| Managed business PC | Contact IT/WSUS administrator | Local resets may violate policy |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is error 0x8007010B dangerous?
It is an update failure code, not by itself evidence of malware or hardware failure. Persistent failures can indicate damaged servicing files, storage problems, policy conflicts, or software interference and should be investigated.
Will resetting Windows Update delete my personal files?
Renaming the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 stores does not remove personal files or installed applications. It can remove cached update data and require downloads again.

Should I delete the SoftwareDistribution folder?
No. Stop the relevant services and rename the documented subfolders so the change is reversible.
Why did the troubleshooter say it fixed the problem when the error returned?
The troubleshooter may correct a condition for one attempt without repairing an underlying cache, servicing, disk, network, or policy problem.
Does this apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes, but the Settings paths differ. Windows 10 standard support ended October 14, 2025, so check whether your installation has eligible extended or managed support.
What if I see 0x8007010B outside Windows Update?
The code can occur in other deployment contexts. Record the application, operation, and accompanying message; do not assume the Windows Update cache reset is the correct fix.
