It changes the camera’s controls, animations and settings organization, but available reporting does not establish a broad improvement in photo or video quality. The “[U]” in the original headline indicates an updated report, not a separate feature.
Version 10.0 introduced this visual language on Pixel 10 devices. Version 10.1 began reaching older Pixels in a staged Google Play rollout in October 2025.
When Pixel Camera 10.1 rolled out
Early reports appeared on October 13 and 14, 2025. On October 16, 9to5Google reported that version 10.1 had broadly rolled out to older Google phones, while Droid Life noted that availability was still uneven on some devices. This was a staged Play Store distribution, not a simultaneous release to every Pixel.
The update is delivered independently through the Pixel Camera app, so a phone can receive it without installing a complete Android system update. A reported sideload package was approximately 1.47 GB; that figure describes the package used for sideloading and is not necessarily the size of the Google Play download. 9to5Google’s report and Droid Life’s rollout coverage provide the dated observations.

Which Pixel phones get it?
Google began extending the redesign to older Pixel phones through Google Play. Reports specifically documented the interface on devices including the Pixel 8 Pro and referenced Pixel 6-and-newer families, but a definitive, current compatibility list is not consistently published in the available coverage. Eligibility can therefore vary by model, Android version, region and rollout stage.
Pixel 10 owners may already have most of this design through Camera 10.0. Foldables and other models can show different controls because of their displays and hardware. A settings list or screenshot from one Pixel should not be treated as universal.

- Last-photo preview: the preview uses a new photo-booth-like animation.
- Zoom shortcuts: typography and sizing are adjusted.
- Color treatment: some icons use less Dynamic Color than the previous interface.
These are visual and interaction-cue changes. Reporting does not describe a new shooting mode or a fundamental change in how the phone captures images.

Photo-mode controls now make state more apparent: inactive choices appear in rounded-square containers, while the selected choice uses a circular treatment. The General and Pro tabs follow the same Material 3 Expressive styling.
More settings moved from the bottom of the panel to a three-dot button in the upper-right corner. That reduces the panel’s vertical footprint and changes the place longtime users will look for secondary options.

How the main Camera settings page is organized
The old Advanced section was removed and its options were regrouped into labeled Material 3 Expressive containers. In a Pixel 8 Pro example documented by 9to5Google, the page was arranged as follows:
| Section | Examples of settings |
|---|---|
| General | Save location, camera sounds, device storage, camera scan suggestions |
| Composition | Framing hints, grid type, Keep selfies as seen, Guided Frame |
| Fast access | Quick access controls, volume-key action, palm timer |
| Photo | Rich color in photos, Ultra HDR, social-media depth features, frequent faces, astrophotography, RAW/JPEG control |
| Video | Video stabilization, audio zoom, Store videos efficiently, Optimize FPS |
| Advanced capture | Timer light, dirty-lens warning and, on some newer devices, underwater photography and video |
| Help & feedback | Support and feedback tools |
This inventory is a device example, not a promise that every Pixel exposes every item. Camera hardware, Android version and model-specific features determine which controls appear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat Optimize FPS does
Optimize FPS is described as automatically switching video recording from 60 frames per second to 30 fps when needed to optimize the recording experience. It may be an existing video option that was surfaced or relocated in the new structure rather than an entirely new recording technology.

Its availability and behavior can depend on the device and recording mode. The available reporting does not establish changes to resolution, HDR, stabilization or low-light processing, so it should not be presented as a guaranteed quality upgrade.

- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your account avatar.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Open the available-updates view and install Pixel Camera if version 10.1 is offered.
- Launch Camera and check the redesigned viewfinder and Camera settings page.
Play Store wording can differ slightly by Android and Play Store release.
If the update is not listed
- Wait for the staged rollout to reach your device.
- Verify the intended Google account and Play Store region.
- Search the Play Store directly for “Pixel Camera.”
- Restart the Play Store, then check again later.
- Do not assume that a missing listing proves the phone is unsupported.
Sideloading an APK adds provenance, signature, architecture and rollback risks. Use it only if you can verify the package and understand how to recover from an incompatible build.

Does 10.1 improve image quality?
No controlled comparison in the available reporting demonstrates better detail, dynamic range, autofocus, noise reduction, portrait segmentation, stabilization, battery life or computational photography. The established changes are the interface redesign, menu relocation and settings reorganization. Treat 10.1 as a usability and consistency update, not a camera hardware or processing upgrade.
What changed after version 10.1?
Later Pixel Camera 10.2 coverage reported that Google restored the earlier order of the quick-access brightness and shadow controls. PhoneArena and Gadinsider described that reversal. Consequently, a phone running 10.2 or newer may not match every 10.1 screenshot or control arrangement.
Bottom line
Pixel Camera 10.1 brings older Pixels much closer to the Pixel 10 camera experience through Material 3 Expressive styling and a reorganized settings page. Install it from Google Play when it appears, but expect a staged rollout and model-specific menus—and do not expect the update itself to produce proven gains in photographic quality.
