How to Find the AppData Folder in Windows 11: A Step-by-Step Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fastest method: press Windows + R, type %userprofile%AppData, and press Enter. Windows opens the hidden AppData folder for the account you are currently using. You can also use %appdata% for Roaming or %localappdata% for Local.

Where is the AppData folder in Windows 11?

The normal path is C:Users<username>AppData. The username, drive letter, or profile location can differ if Windows is installed on another drive or your profile has been redirected. Microsoft documents these known-folder locations at its Known Folder documentation.

AppData contains user-specific application data such as settings, profiles, logs, templates, caches, mods, and sometimes game saves. It is not normally where the installed program files live; those are usually under locations such as Program Files. Not every application uses AppData: some store data in Documents, Saved Games, a platform folder, cloud storage, or a custom location.

Method 1: Open AppData with the Run command

This is the quickest approach and does not require hidden folders to be visible.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter %userprofile%AppData.
  3. Press Enter.

Windows opens the AppData root for the signed-in user. These shortcuts open its common branches:

Command Opens Use it for
%appdata% AppDataRoaming User settings and data that an application may be designed to roam in managed environments
%localappdata% AppDataLocal Machine-specific settings, larger caches, and local data
%userprofile%AppDataLocalLow AppDataLocalLow Data created by applications running with lower-integrity or restricted permissions

These are environment variables, so Windows resolves them to the current user’s profile. The folder choices are general conventions, not guarantees; an application can split its data between branches.

Method 2: Use File Explorer’s address bar

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click the location bar at the top of the window, not the search box on the right.
  3. Type %userprofile%AppData, %appdata%, or %localappdata%.
  4. Press Enter.

The address bar navigates directly. Entering the same text in the search box searches for matching files instead, which can produce unrelated results. Windows 11 may label the starting view Home; older guides may call it Quick access. The navigation controls remain in File Explorer, as described by Microsoft’s File Explorer guide.

Method 3: Browse to AppData manually

  1. Open File Explorer and select This PC.
  2. Open the Windows installation drive, usually C:.
  3. Open Users.
  4. Open the folder for the account currently signed in.
  5. Open AppData.

AppData is hidden by default. In current Windows 11 releases, select View > Show > Hidden items. Microsoft documents this control at File Explorer in Windows. If that menu is unavailable or your interface differs, use View > Show > Options, open the View tab, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and click OK; see Microsoft’s hidden-files instructions.

What are Roaming, Local, and LocalLow?

The three folders serve different typical purposes, but developers decide where each file belongs.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Roaming: commonly holds user preferences and application data intended to follow a profile in a managed or roaming setup. “Roaming” does not guarantee successful synchronization.
  • Local: commonly holds computer-specific settings, databases, downloads, and caches. It can also contain important settings or saves, so do not treat it as disposable.
  • LocalLow: is used by software operating with lower integrity or more restricted permissions.

Microsoft identifies the standard Roaming and Local locations in its known-folder documentation.

How to find a particular app, game, or configuration file

  1. Check the instructions or support page to see whether they specify Roaming, Local, or LocalLow.
  2. Open the matching branch with %appdata%, %localappdata%, or the LocalLow path above.
  3. Look for the publisher or application name. It may differ from the product’s marketing name.
  4. Close the application before replacing or editing a file.
  5. Copy the target file or folder to a safe backup location before making changes.

Do not assume every program has a plainly named AppData folder. Microsoft’s application-data guidance explains that packaged apps can use package-specific storage. A missing folder may mean the app has not created user data yet, stores saves in Documents or Saved Games, uses a game-platform directory, or synchronizes data in the cloud.

If AppData is missing or a shortcut fails

The folder is not visible

Confirm that you are in your own profile rather than C:UsersPublic, then enable View > Show > Hidden items. The Run shortcuts bypass the visibility setting entirely.

%appdata% opened the “wrong” folder

This command intentionally opens AppDataRoaming. Use %localappdata% for Local or %userprofile%AppData for the root.

The profile is not on C:

Press Windows + R, enter %userprofile%, and press Enter. Windows opens the actual profile location; append AppData there, or use the other environment-variable shortcuts. Folder redirection and installation choices can change the apparent path.

You are using another Windows account

Each account normally has a separate profile, such as C:UsersAliceAppData and C:UsersBobAppData. The shortcuts always target the account currently signed in.

Access is denied

Close the related application and verify that you are working in your own profile. Do not take ownership, weaken permissions, or disable security controls just to inspect a file. Use the application’s supported export, repair, reset, or backup feature when available.

For additional Windows search and File Explorer guidance, see Microsoft’s file-and-app search guide.

Is it safe to delete files in AppData?

Opening AppData is safe; changing its contents is not automatically safe. Never delete the entire folder, and do not remove an unfamiliar directory simply because its name suggests temporary data. A cache may be regenerated, but it can also contain profiles, saved games, licenses, or settings.

  • Close the application first.
  • Back up the file or folder before editing or deleting it.
  • Follow the application publisher’s instructions for resets or cache cleanup.
  • Do not copy another user’s entire AppData folder into your profile.
  • Expect some files to be locked, protected, encrypted, or recreated automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Is AppData hidden by default?

Yes. Windows hides it in File Explorer, but %userprofile%AppData, %appdata%, and %localappdata% can open it without changing visibility settings.

Do not move it manually. Windows and applications expect profile locations and known-folder settings to remain consistent; use supported Windows profile or folder-redirection controls instead.

Why can’t I find my game’s save files?

The game may use Roaming, Local, LocalLow, Documents, Saved Games, a launcher-specific folder, or cloud storage. Check the game publisher’s documentation and search the correct branch rather than the entire drive first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does `%appdata%` open the main AppData folder?

No. It opens `AppDataRoaming`. Use `%userprofile%AppData` for the root or `%localappdata%` for `Local`.

How do I find AppData for another Windows user?

Sign in to that account and use the shortcuts there. Each account has its own profile; browsing another user’s protected files may require permission and is not a routine troubleshooting step.

What if my application stores data outside AppData?

Check its official support documentation. Common alternatives include Documents, Saved Games, launcher folders, package-specific storage, and cloud synchronization.
