Many standard black cartridges are rated for about 700–3,000 pages, high-yield models for roughly 3,000–10,000 pages, and larger business cartridges for 10,000–41,000 or more. Those are manufacturer-declared results under standardized tests, not guarantees. Heavy graphics, photos, dark spreadsheets and other high-coverage pages can reduce the result substantially.
Typical toner yields
| Cartridge type | Approximate declared yield | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Starter toner | 500–1,500 pages | Cartridge supplied with a new printer |
| Small standard black | 700–2,000 pages | Home and light-duty printing |
| Standard office black | 1,200–3,500 pages | Small offices |
| High-yield black | 3,000–10,000 pages | Regular document printing |
| Super/high-capacity black | 10,000–25,000 pages | Larger office printers |
| Enterprise extra-high-yield | 18,000–41,000+ pages | High-volume business systems |
| Color toner | About 1,200–6,000+ pages per color | Color laser printers |
Examples illustrate the spread: Brother lists approximately 700 pages for a starter cartridge, 1,200 for a TN730 standard cartridge and 3,000 for a TN760 high-yield cartridge. Other Brother families include cartridges rated around 11,000, 18,000 and 25,000 pages. HP lists its 159X high-yield black cartridge at approximately 10,000 pages and some enterprise cartridges at up to 41,000 pages. See Brother’s yield guidance, Brother’s capacity examples and HP’s 159X specification.
What “page yield” means
Page yield is the manufacturer’s average or declared number of standard pages produced before the cartridge reaches its defined end of life. It is not the amount of powder in the cartridge, a guaranteed minimum, the printer’s remaining-toner estimate, or the life of the drum.
Monochrome laser yields commonly use ISO/IEC 19752; color laser yields use ISO/IEC 19798. Inkjet cartridges generally use ISO/IEC 24711, so inkjet figures should not be applied automatically to laser toner. Brother publishes its monochrome and color declarations at ISO/IEC 19752 and ISO/IEC 19798.

Why your cartridge may print fewer pages
Toner coverage
Testing commonly uses a sample page with approximately 5% of the printable area covered. A normal text memo may be reasonably close; a flyer, photo, shaded table, large bold heading or full-page background is not. Brother reports that printing at approximately 10% coverage significantly reduces yield and identifies graphics, charts, reports and the amount printed on each page as important variables. Read its explanation at Brother support.
A useful planning illustration is:
Estimated pages ≈ rated yield × 5% ÷ actual coverage
For a 3,000-page cartridge, this suggests roughly 3,000 pages at 5%, 1,500 at 10% and 750 at 20%. These are illustrations, not promises: calibration, cleaning, image processing and end-of-life detection prevent a perfectly linear result.

Starter cartridges
The cartridge shipped with a new printer often contains less toner than a replacement cartridge. For one Brother family, the starter is approximately 700 pages, compared with 1,200 for standard and 3,000 for high-yield toner. Do not use the first cartridge as the expected life of every replacement.
Color printing
Color printers normally use separate cyan, magenta, yellow and black cartridges, each with its own rating. Brother’s TN229 family, for example, is rated at approximately 1,500 pages for standard black, 1,200 for each standard color, 3,000 for high-yield black, 2,300 for each high-yield color, 4,500 for super-high-yield black and 4,000 for each super-high-yield color. The first cartridge to run low can determine when color printing is restricted. See Brother’s color figures.
Paper, job size and printer operation
Check whether the declared figure uses Letter or A4, and distinguish printed sides from sheets when using duplex. Short, repeated jobs can involve more initialization or calibration than longer runs. Registration, cleaning routines, paper type, firmware, environment and cartridge-end detection can also affect actual use; manufacturers do not provide one universal percentage loss for these factors.

How to find the exact yield for your printer
- Read the printer’s exact model number.
- Read the cartridge number, such as TN760 or 159X.
- Open the manufacturer’s supplies or support page and search that cartridge number.
- Locate “page yield,” “declared yield” or “average cartridge yields.”
- Confirm whether it is starter, standard, high-, extra- or super-high-yield, and whether it is black or a specific color.
- Check the stated test standard and paper-size qualification.
HP’s toner catalogue is at HP toner cartridges. Brother’s yield support is at Brother support. For Canon laser printers, use the exact printer and cartridge support page; Canon’s page-yield methodology page is primarily for inkjet cartridges: Canon page yields.
Standard versus high-yield toner
| Choice | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Lower upfront cost; sensible for occasional printing | More replacements and often a higher rated cost per page |
| High-yield | More pages, fewer interruptions and often lower cost per rated page | Higher initial price; savings depend on the actual price difference and your volume |
High-yield is generally practical for regular office printing. Occasional users may prefer standard capacity, particularly when the price difference is small or the cartridge may remain unused for a long time. Always verify model compatibility.
Toner is not the drum
The toner cartridge holds powder. In printers with a separate drum unit, the drum transfers the image and has its own service life. Brother documents a separate drum example rated at approximately 17,000 pages, independent of toner yields; see Brother’s drum guidance. Repeating marks, streaks, gray backgrounds or other persistent defects can indicate the drum, transfer belt, fuser, laser window or another maintenance part rather than empty toner.

Cost per page and monthly planning
Compare cartridges with:
Cost per rated page = cartridge price ÷ declared page yield
A $90 cartridge rated for 3,000 pages costs $0.03 per rated page. A $150 cartridge rated for 10,000 pages costs $0.015 per rated page. Include shipping, return terms, warranty, cartridge type and whether a drum is included. For color, account for toner consumed from black, cyan, magenta and yellow rather than comparing one color cartridge in isolation.
To estimate months of use, divide yield by your monthly printed pages: 1,200 pages at 300 pages per month is approximately four months; 3,000 at 500 per month is approximately six months; 10,000 at 1,000 per month is approximately ten months. For unusually dark mixed-content work, budgeting for only 70%–80% of the declared yield is a conservative planning rule, not manufacturer data.

OEM, compatible and remanufactured cartridges
Genuine (OEM)
OEM cartridges usually provide the clearest official yield, manufacturer support and predictable chip and firmware behavior, but commonly cost more.
Compatible
Compatible cartridges can reduce purchase price and may offer a lower cost per page. Quality varies: check exact model compatibility, chip reliability, leakage and print-quality guarantees, warranty and returns.
Remanufactured
Remanufactured cartridges reuse or rebuild cartridge components. Results depend on the remanufacturer; worn drums or wipers can affect quality and yield. Compare the supplier’s stated yield and policies rather than assuming every remanufactured cartridge is good or bad.
When the yield seems too low
- Confirm that the cartridge was not a lower-yield starter model.
- Check the official rating for the exact printer and cartridge number.
- Review how much of each page is covered by toner and whether color supplies were involved.
- Confirm Letter versus A4 and whether the page counter includes earlier printing.
- Consider toner used during setup, calibration or maintenance.
- Inspect for drum or other imaging defects when pages are streaked or gray.
A toner-low warning is an estimate, not necessarily the exact moment the cartridge is empty. Some Brother models display the warning with approximately 30% of toner life remaining, but that figure is model-specific. Printing may continue until quality falls or the printer stops. Gentle cartridge redistribution may temporarily improve coverage on some models, but it does not restore toner and can create a mess; replace the cartridge and follow the exact manufacturer troubleshooting instructions when pages are pale, blank or streaked.
Bottom line
Start with the exact cartridge’s declared yield, then adjust your expectation for coverage, color, paper size and printer operation. For many users that means roughly 1,000–3,000 pages from standard black toner and 3,000–10,000 from high-yield toner, while business cartridges can go far beyond those figures. Cost per rated page—not the cartridge’s shelf price—is the useful comparison.
