Verdict: The Netgear RAX20 remains a capable entry-level Wi-Fi 6 router for ordinary broadband, but it is not a sensible new primary router in 2026. NETGEAR lists it as End of Support (EoS) and says no security updates are planned for EoS models. Existing owners can use it temporarily with careful hardening, but should plan a replacement.

What AX1800 actually means
AX1800 is a theoretical class total, not a promise that one phone or laptop can download at 1.8 Gbps. The figure adds the maximum PHY rates of both radios: 600 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 1,200 Mbps on 5 GHz. A client normally uses one band at a time, and real throughput is reduced by protocol overhead, interference, signal strength, channel width, client capability and competing traffic. NETGEAR explains the theoretical rates in its user manual.

The 5 GHz band is the better choice for nearby high-speed devices. The 2.4 GHz band generally travels farther through obstacles and supports older devices, but is usually more congested.

Performance and range
Historical throughput
Independent testing by TechGearLab found the RAX20 generally average rather than class-leading. In its nine-foot 2.4 GHz tests, it measured approximately 100 Mbps unobstructed and 90 Mbps with an obstruction. Those are historical results from that outlet’s equipment, firmware and test conditions—not a guarantee for every home.
See the methodology and results at TechGearLab’s RAX20 review. No current laboratory result establishes that the RAX20 can saturate a gigabit internet connection over ordinary Wi-Fi.
Coverage expectations
“Small to medium homes” is NETGEAR’s positioning, not a universal square-foot rating. Dense walls, neighboring networks, metal, appliances, floor layouts and client antennas can change coverage dramatically. Five-gigahertz signals lose strength through walls faster than 2.4 GHz. Place the router centrally, high up and with as few walls and ceilings as possible between it and clients, as NETGEAR recommends in the manual.
Recommended Free Tools
A single RAX20 is not a dependable substitute for a supported mesh system in a large or multistory home.
Gigabit and wired use
Its four Gigabit LAN ports are suitable for wired PCs, consoles, TVs and access points on gigabit-class service, subject to Ethernet overhead. There is no multi-gigabit WAN or LAN port. Wireless AX1800 labeling should not be confused with guaranteed gigabit Wi-Fi throughout a home.

Features and everyday usability
Wi-Fi 6 and WPA3
Wi-Fi 6 features such as OFDMA can improve efficiency when several compatible clients share a busy network. Benefits depend on client support, radio conditions and configuration; a Wi-Fi 6 badge does not automatically beat every Wi-Fi 5 router. WPA3 is listed, but older clients may require WPA2 or a mixed security mode.
Nighthawk management
The Nighthawk app handles guided setup and common management. Browser administration is available at http://www.routerlogin.net, http://www.routerlogin.com or http://192.168.1.1. The default LAN address is 192.168.1.1, with DHCP normally covering 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.254.

The USB 3.0 port can share compatible storage locally. The manual lists FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, NTFS with compression, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, HFS and HFS+ support. Drives requiring special computer drivers may not work, and a bus-powered drive may need its own power supply. NETGEAR says a drive can take up to two minutes to become ready.
ReadySHARE is a convenience file-sharing feature, not a NAS replacement: it lacks the performance, redundancy, applications and management of dedicated network storage. Remote FTP or Dynamic DNS access increases exposure and should not be enabled casually.
Armor and parental controls
NETGEAR advertises Armor, but applicable products require a paid subscription after any trial period. Historical materials also mention Smart Parental Controls; exact filters, schedules and free-versus-paid functions can depend on the app, account and firmware. These services are not a reason to buy an unsupported router.

Setup and administration
- Download the Nighthawk app using cellular data or an existing internet connection.
- Open the app and follow its setup instructions.
- Connect your phone to the RAX20’s Wi-Fi when prompted.
- Complete the internet connection and create a unique administrator password.
- Allow the app to check for available firmware, then review wireless security and guest-network settings.
The router does not provide internet access until setup is complete, so a phone connected only to the new router may need cellular data to download the app. For browser administration, connect locally and open one of the addresses above. Menu labels can vary by firmware.
- Change the administrator password immediately.
- Use WPA3 where all important clients support it, or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode when necessary.
- Disable remote administration unless there is a specific, understood need.
- Turn off unused services and avoid exposing ReadySHARE or FTP publicly.
- Back up the configuration before major changes.
Security and firmware support in 2026
This is the decisive issue. NETGEAR’s June 2026 security advisory identifies the RAX20 as EoS and states that no security updates are planned for models in that status. The advisory lists firmware version V1.0.18.144 in several vulnerability tables. That identifies a firmware version associated with the listed fixes; it is not a promise of future maintenance.
An “up to date” message on the router does not mean the product remains actively supported. Check the installed version through the Nighthawk app or web interface and verify downloads through NETGEAR’s official support pages, not an unknown third-party mirror. Historical release information is documented at NETGEAR’s RAX20 firmware knowledge-base page.
When an existing owner can keep it temporarily
- The router is behind an ISP gateway or another firewall.
- Remote administration and unnecessary services are disabled.
- The administrator password is unique.
- It does not control sensitive business systems, smart locks, cameras or alarms.
- A supported replacement is already planned.
This is temporary risk management, not evidence that an EoS router is secure indefinitely.
Replace promptly when
- It is directly exposed to the internet.
- It handles remote work, business traffic or sensitive IoT devices.
- The firmware history or administrator credentials are unknown.
- It reboots, loses settings or has a damaged power supply.
- You are buying it secondhand for long-term primary use.
- You require continuing security updates.
A factory reset is mandatory for a used unit, but it does not change the RAX20’s EoS status.

Current alternatives
| Router | What is established | Best fit | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASUS RT-AX1800S | AX1800 dual-band Wi-Fi 6, four Gigabit LAN ports, one Gigabit WAN port and AiProtection; ASUS U.S. store showed $69.99 when checked. | Low-cost current replacement for a small apartment or modest home. | Still dual-band and budget-class; ASUS range claims are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. |
| NETGEAR RAX5 | Current NETGEAR catalog product, displayed at $49.99 when checked, rated up to 1.6 Gbps. | Lowest-cost option for buyers who prefer NETGEAR. | Not a direct RAX20 specification match; verify ports, USB availability, hardware revision and support duration. |
| NETGEAR RAX9 | Current AX1800-class listing, displayed at $99.99, positioned for small-to-medium homes. | Readers wanting a current NETGEAR AX1800-class model. | Costs substantially more; confirm that its extra features justify the price. |
| Supported mesh system | Appropriate response to large, multistory or heavily obstructed homes. | Whole-home coverage problems. | Unnecessary expense for a small apartment served by one current router. |
Prices are U.S. vendor-page signals observed in August 2026 and can change. Do not automatically choose the familiar TP-Link Archer AX20: TP-Link’s EOL documentation lists multiple AX20 hardware versions as discontinued or end of life.
Who should buy or keep the RAX20?
Buying new
Do not buy it as a normal 2026 primary router. The hardware is adequate for sub-gigabit service, streaming, browsing, video calls and a modest client count, but active security support matters more than its old AX1800 rating or a low used-market price.
Already own it
It can serve as a short-term router for a small or medium home if exposure and services are minimized, but replacement should be part of the plan—especially when the router is directly internet-facing or carries sensitive traffic.
Best choice by need
- Cheap current single-router setup: compare the ASUS RT-AX1800S with supported NETGEAR models.
- Whole-home coverage: choose a supported mesh system rather than adding an obsolete extender.
- Multi-gigabit service: skip the RAX20 because all Ethernet ports are Gigabit.
- USB storage: use ReadySHARE only for occasional local sharing, or buy a dedicated NAS for serious storage needs.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The RAX20 was a reasonable budget Wi-Fi 6 router when current, but NETGEAR’s End-of-Support status and lack of planned security updates make it a poor new purchase in 2026. Existing owners should harden it temporarily and budget for a supported replacement.
