The quickest way to save your entire Windows display is Windows + PrtScn. Windows captures every visible monitor area and saves the image in PicturesScreenshots. If you press PrtScn alone, Windows copies the full screen to the clipboard instead, so you must paste it with Ctrl + V. For editing before saving, use Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode.
These instructions apply to current Windows 10 and Windows 11 interfaces; keyboard labels and behavior can vary by laptop manufacturer. Microsoft’s documented shortcuts are collected in its Windows keyboard-shortcuts reference.
Save a full-screen screenshot directly to a file
- Arrange your desktop exactly as you want it captured. Close or minimize anything that should not appear, and open any menus or windows you need visible.
- Press Windows + PrtScn together. The key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or a similar abbreviation.
- Open File Explorer and select Pictures in the left pane.
- Open the Screenshots folder. Windows places the captured image there, as documented by Microsoft Support.
The shortcut saves the capture without opening an editor. Use it when you need a file quickly for an upload, attachment, bug report, or archive.
What happens with multiple monitors?
Windows captures the screen output associated with the shortcut, which can include your entire desktop across connected displays depending on your Windows and display configuration. Check the resulting image before sharing it: sensitive content on a second monitor may be included. If you need only one application or one region, use the alternatives below.

Copy the entire screen to the clipboard
Press PrtScn by itself. No file may appear, because this command places a full-screen image on the Windows clipboard. Open Paint, Word, an email composer, a chat window, or another image-capable application and press Ctrl + V to paste it. Microsoft describes this clipboard workflow in its copy-the-window-or-screen-contents guidance.
Save a clipboard capture after pasting
- Press PrtScn.
- Open Paint from Start.
- Press Ctrl + V.
- Select File > Save as, choose PNG, JPEG, or another available format, and select a folder.
Clipboard contents can be replaced by your next copy operation. Paste the image before copying other content if you need to preserve it.
Capture and edit the full screen with Snipping Tool
Snipping Tool is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11 and provides an explicit full-screen mode, markup tools, and saving. Microsoft’s current instructions are in Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.
- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch the app.
- Choose the capture control (often labeled New), then select Full screen from the snip modes.
- Capture the display. Snipping Tool opens the result in its editor.
- Use the available pen, highlighter, crop, or other editing controls if needed.
- Select the save button, or use File > Save as, and choose the destination and format.
Open the capture overlay with Windows + Shift + S
Press Windows + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Depending on your Windows version and interface, it offers rectangular, freeform, window, and full-screen choices. Select the full-screen option when it is shown. The capture is generally placed on the clipboard and may also trigger a notification that opens the Snipping Tool editor, where you can annotate and save it.

Keyboard and laptop variations
Many compact keyboards combine Print Screen with another function. Try holding Fn while pressing the key labeled PrtSc or PrtScn. On devices without a dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space Bar as an alternative in its print-screen shortcut guidance. Manufacturer firmware can change which combination works, so test the shortcut and check the resulting folder or clipboard.
On-screen keyboards and accessibility
If a physical key is unavailable, open On-Screen Keyboard from Start and select PrtScn. You can then use the Windows shortcut where supported, or copy the screen and paste it into Paint. Accessibility and keyboard-layout settings may alter the exact labels shown.
Where did my screenshot go?
- You used Windows + PrtScn: check File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. If OneDrive backs up your Pictures folder, the path may appear under your OneDrive directory instead.
- You used PrtScn alone: paste with Ctrl + V; the image is on the clipboard, not necessarily in a folder.
- You used Snipping Tool: look for its notification and open the editor, then use Save as. A capture may remain unsaved until you explicitly choose a location.
- You used Windows + Shift + S: check the clipboard by pasting, and open the Snipping Tool notification if it appears.
Search File Explorer for recently modified image files if the expected folder is empty. Folder redirection, cloud backup, organizational policies, and Windows build differences can change the visible path.
Troubleshoot a failed full-screen capture
Nothing happens when you press Windows + PrtScn
- Confirm that you are pressing the Windows logo key and the Print Screen key simultaneously.
- Try Fn + Windows + PrtScn on a laptop or compact keyboard.
- If there is no Print Screen key, try Microsoft’s documented Fn + Windows + Space Bar combination.
- Use Snipping Tool as a fallback; it avoids relying on the keyboard’s Print Screen mapping.
The screenshot seems to have disappeared
First determine whether you pressed PrtScn alone. Paste into Paint with Ctrl + V. If it pastes successfully, save it from Paint. If you used the Windows shortcut, inspect both your local Pictures folder and any redirected or synchronized Pictures location.

The result shows the wrong window
Alt + PrtScn captures only the active window. Return to Windows + PrtScn for the whole display, or choose Full screen in Snipping Tool. For a specific application, activate that window before using the window-focused shortcut.
A menu closes before it is captured
Use Snipping Tool’s delayed capture option when available: set a short delay, open the menu during the countdown, and then choose the required snip mode. The exact delay controls can vary by Windows version.
The image contains private information
Review every monitor and notification area before sending the file. Crop or cover account numbers, messages, access tokens, and personal data in Snipping Tool or Paint. A full-screen image can include content outside the application you intended to demonstrate.
