Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo take a screenshot in Windows 10, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform, and select what you want to capture. The image is copied to the clipboard and opens in Snipping Tool (or Snip & Sketch) so you can edit, save, copy, or share it.
Take a screenshot with Windows + Shift + S
This is the quickest Windows 10 snapshot workflow and works without installing another app.
- Open the page, application window, menu, or image you want to capture.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and a snipping toolbar appears.
- Choose a capture mode: Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- Drag over the area, select a window, or let Full screen capture immediately.
- Click the notification that appears. The capture opens in Snipping Tool/Snip & Sketch, where you can annotate, copy, save, or share it.
Microsoft describes this shortcut as a way to bring up a toolbar, snip a rectangle, a freeform area, or the full screen, and send the result to the clipboard.
Choose the right capture mode
| Mode | What it captures | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | A rectangular area you draw | A portion of a webpage, document, or app |
| Window | A complete application window or dialog | Sharing one app without the desktop around it |
| Full screen | The entire display immediately | Capturing everything visible on a monitor |
| Freeform | An irregular outline you draw | Isolating a non-rectangular object or region |
On a multi-monitor setup, Full screen includes the display selected by the snipping interface; use Window or Rectangle when you need a specific application or region.

Capture a menu before it disappears
Menus often close when you press a shortcut or move the pointer. Use Snipping Tool’s delay instead:
- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and select the app.
- Choose Delay and select a delay such as five seconds.
- Select New, then choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- During the countdown, open the menu or arrange the screen.
- When the display turns gray, select the area to capture (Full screen captures automatically).
The delay is useful for context menus, hover menus, drop-down lists, and any state that vanishes when you click elsewhere.
Other ways to open the snapshot tools
Start menu
Select Start, type snipping tool, and open the app. This gives you access to Delay and the editing window before you capture.
Print Screen key
Press PrtSc (sometimes labeled PrtScn) for a static full-screen image copied to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, an email, a document, or another image editor with Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V as appropriate. On Windows 10’s Snip & Sketch, you could enable Use the Print Screen key to launch screen snipping in Settings; the Action Center also offered a Screen snip quick action.

If your keyboard has no usable Print Screen key, Windows + Shift + S is the direct built-in alternative. A USB keyboard with a clearly labeled PrtSc key is only needed for the PrtSc workflow.
Edit, annotate, and extract text
After an image snip opens, the tool provides:
- Pen and highlighter for marking details.
- Shapes for arrows, boxes, and callouts.
- Eraser to remove annotations.
- Crop to trim the image.
- Undo and Redo while editing.
- Text actions for optical character recognition (OCR).
Text actions recognize text in the image and let you copy it. Microsoft says recognition runs locally on the device. The same tools include quick redaction for detected email addresses or phone numbers, which is useful before sharing a screenshot containing personal information.
Copy, save, and share a snip
Copy immediately
Every image snip is copied to the clipboard. Use Ctrl+C from the Snipping Tool window, then paste it into the destination application.
Save a file
Current Microsoft guidance says captured snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, and that automatic-save behavior and the default folder can be changed in Settings. Choose Save as when you need a different folder or filename, or press Ctrl+S.

Microsoft documentation for the built-in tool lists PNG, GIF, JPEG, and HTML as available formats; PNG is usually the safest choice for text and interface screenshots, while JPEG produces smaller files for photographic content.
Share
Use the share command in the Snipping Tool window or attach the saved image to your normal mail, chat, or cloud-storage workflow. Check the image for account names, notifications, email addresses, and other private data before sending it.
Which Windows 10 method should you use?
| Method | Speed | Scope | Output | Delay | Editing and OCR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | Fastest | Rectangle, Window, Full screen, Freeform | Clipboard plus Snipping Tool window | Use the app’s Delay first | Yes, after opening the notification |
| Snipping Tool app | Moderate | All modes | Clipboard and file | Built in | Yes |
| PrtSc | Very fast | Full screen | Clipboard | No | Only after pasting into an editor |
| Action Center Screen snip | Moderate | Snipping selection | Clipboard and Snipping Tool | Use the app’s Delay | Yes, after opening the capture |
Developer option: launch capture with the ms-screenclip URI
Microsoft Learn documents the ms-screenclip:// URI scheme for packaged Windows apps. An app can use Launcher.LaunchUriAsync to ask Snipping Tool to start an image or video capture, select enabled modes, request automatic saving, and receive a callback containing status and a file-access token. This is intended for an app integration rather than a normal desktop shortcut; the packaged app must use the Windows launcher API so Snipping Tool can return the response.
Troubleshooting Windows 10 snapshots
Windows + Shift + S does nothing
- Press the Windows logo key and Shift together, then tap S; do not use Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Open Start and launch Snipping Tool directly to confirm the app is available.
- If another utility has reassigned the shortcut, use the Start-menu method or PrtSc instead.
The screenshot is not where you expected
A shortcut capture is initially in the clipboard and appears in the Snipping Tool notification. Open that notification and choose Save as. If automatic saving is enabled, check the Screenshots folder and the save-location setting in Snipping Tool.
Rank #4
A menu vanished before capture
Start Snipping Tool first, set Delay (five seconds is a practical starting point), choose New, and open the menu during the countdown.
Only part of a window was captured
Choose Window mode and click the window border, or use Rectangle and drag beyond the content you need. Full screen is appropriate when the complete display matters.
Text actions cannot find words
OCR works on the pixels in the captured image. Capture a sharper, larger region, avoid heavy compression, and use the Text actions command after the image opens. Recognition is performed locally, so the device must be able to process the image but does not need to upload it for recognition.
PrtSc is unavailable
Use Windows + Shift + S, or connect a keyboard with a clearly labeled PrtSc key. If you enabled the Print Screen launch option in Snip & Sketch, verify that the setting remains enabled.

Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a public webpage rather than your local Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It handles the browser work for you: cookie and consent banners are accepted and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all parameters. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
For automation, you can request full-page captures with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selected element, dark mode, any viewport or one of 12 device presets, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/orientation/page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, a click before capture, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, blocked ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which simplifies migration. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
