The shortcut depends on your laptop’s operating system. On Windows, press Windows logo key + Shift + S; on a Mac, press Shift-Command-3 for the whole screen or Shift-Command-4 for a selection; on a Chromebook, press the dedicated Screenshot key or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The sections below explain each capture mode, where the image goes, and how to save or share it.
Choose the right capture mode first
Use a full-screen capture when someone needs to see everything on your display. Use a window capture for one application, or a rectangular/partial capture for a specific chart, message, or setting. Selecting only the useful area keeps unrelated tabs, notifications, and personal information out of the image.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture a selected area, window, or full screen
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, choose Freeform, Rectangle, Window, or Full-screen capture.
- For a freeform or rectangle snip, drag around the area you need. For a window snip, select the application window. Full-screen capture takes the entire display.
- The result is copied to the clipboard and opened in Snipping Tool. Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to edit, save, or share it.
Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen. A selection capture is usually the safest choice for support requests because it excludes unrelated content.

Use Print Screen when you need the whole display in the clipboard
Press Print Screen to capture the full screen to the clipboard. Laptop keyboards may label this key PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. Open the destination app, press Ctrl + V, and paste the image. If you need a file rather than a pasted image, use the Snipping Tool workflow and press Ctrl + S to save.
Save, edit, or share a Windows snip
After a capture, the Snipping Tool window provides the editing, saving, and sharing controls. Use Ctrl + C to copy the edited image or Ctrl + S to save it. If you close the notification without saving, the clipboard copy may be replaced the next time you copy something, so save important captures promptly.
Mac laptops
Capture the entire screen
Press Shift-Command-3. macOS saves the screenshot to the desktop by default and briefly shows a thumbnail. Click the thumbnail to mark up or edit the image before it disappears.
Capture part of the screen
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Drag over the portion you want.
- Release the pointer to take the screenshot.
- Open the desktop file or click its thumbnail to edit it.
macOS also supports window capture in its screenshot controls. Choose the window option when you want one application without the rest of the desktop.

Know when macOS may refuse a capture
Some applications restrict screenshots. Apple specifically notes that apps such as Apple TV may not allow screenshots of their windows. If a capture is blank or blocked only in one application, the restriction may belong to that app rather than your Mac’s shortcut.
Chromebooks
Use the Screenshot key
If your Chromebook keyboard has a dedicated Screenshot key, press it to open Screen Capture. Select Full screen, Partial, or Window, then complete the on-screen selection.
Use the keyboard shortcut on other Chromebook keyboards
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the key with a rectangle and two vertical lines, commonly on the top row.
- Choose full-screen, partial, or window capture from the Screen Capture controls.
- Make the selection or select the window.
If you are using an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative. You can also open the on-screen Screen Capture control instead of using a physical shortcut.
Find and move Chromebook screenshots
ChromeOS saves screenshots to Downloads by default. Open the Files app, select Downloads, and open the image to review, delete, or share it. To use another folder, change the destination in Screen Capture settings. The same location rule applies to screen recordings unless you select a different folder.

What to do when the shortcut does not work
Windows shortcut produces nothing
- Confirm that you are pressing the Windows logo key, Shift, and S together.
- If your keyboard has a different Print Screen label, use Windows logo key + Shift + S instead; that shortcut does not depend on a dedicated Print Screen key.
- If the snip appears but you cannot find a file, open the Snipping Tool notification and save it with Ctrl + S.
Mac shortcut is unfamiliar
Mac screenshot shortcuts use Command, not a Print Screen key. Use Shift-Command-3 for the entire display and Shift-Command-4 for a selected portion. Check the desktop for the saved image and click its thumbnail for editing.
Chromebook has no Screenshot or Show windows key
Open the on-screen Screen Capture control. With an external keyboard, try Ctrl + Shift + F5. Once the control is open, choose full-screen, partial, or window capture without relying on the laptop’s printed key labels.
The image is blank or the wrong content appears
Re-select the intended window or region and wait for the page or application to finish drawing. A blank result limited to a particular protected app may be an application policy; Apple lists Apple TV as an example of software that may block window screenshots.
Save, edit, and share without exposing extra information
- Crop before sharing: remove account numbers, private messages, browser tabs, and notifications.
- Use a window or region: it is faster to understand than a full desktop image and reduces accidental disclosure.
- Save immediately: Windows captures can remain only in the clipboard until you save them; Mac files are normally on the desktop; Chromebook files are normally in Downloads.
- Annotate the important point: arrows or a short highlight help a support agent find the error without guessing.
- Choose the destination deliberately: on Chromebook, set a different Screen Capture folder if Downloads is not where your team looks; on Windows, use the Snipping Tool save command; on Mac, move the desktop file after editing.

Where should I look first after taking the image?
Check the Snipping Tool and clipboard flow on Windows, the desktop on macOS, and Downloads on ChromeOS. Those are the documented immediate destinations for the three platforms.
Why would a web-page screenshot be cleaner than a laptop screenshot?
A laptop screenshot includes browser chrome, notifications, and whatever else is visible on the desktop. A website screenshot service can load the page directly and remove consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before returning the page image.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does taking a screenshot include the mouse pointer?
The platform instructions covered here describe the screen content and capture area, but do not establish a universal pointer-inclusion rule. Check the preview or saved image and use the platform’s capture controls if pointer visibility matters.
Can I change where screenshots are stored?
ChromeOS provides a Screen Capture setting for choosing another folder. Windows saves through Snipping Tool, and macOS uses the desktop by default; move the saved file afterward if you need a different folder.
