Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

To target a customer’s first purchase, create the coupon in core WooCommerce, then use an extension such as WooCommerce Coupon Restrictions or WooCommerce Smart Coupons for first-time eligibility. Decide separately whether shoppers enter a code, receive an automatically applied discount, or get a coupon by email after completing their first order.
What WooCommerce can and cannot do by itself
Enable coupons under WooCommerce > Settings > General > Enable coupons, then save. Core WooCommerce provides coupon types, product and spending restrictions, expiry dates, stacking controls, and usage limits.
The cited WooCommerce core coupon documentation does not provide a first-customer-only setting. The explicit eligibility controls described below belong to extensions, so do not expect a “new customers” checkbox in the standard core coupon editor.
Create the base coupon in WooCommerce
- Open Marketing > Coupons in WordPress admin and select Add coupon.
- Enter a coupon code or generate one.
- Choose a discount type: percentage discount, fixed cart discount, or fixed product discount.
- Enter the discount amount. Choose an amount that fits your margins and business objective; the official setup documentation does not establish a universally correct percentage.
- Set an expiry date when the offer should end.
Set restrictions and limits deliberately
Use the coupon’s Usage restriction and Usage limits panels to prevent unintended redemptions.

- Minimum or maximum spend: require a qualifying basket or cap eligibility at a specified order value.
- Products: include or exclude selected products or categories as appropriate for your margins.
- Individual use: prevent the coupon from being combined with other coupons when stacking would be unprofitable.
- Usage limit per coupon: cap total redemptions across all customers.
- Usage limit per user: set this to 1 when each customer should redeem this particular coupon only once.
- Expiry: stop redemption after the offer’s closing date.
Add first-time-customer eligibility with an extension
WooCommerce Coupon Restrictions
Coupon Restrictions adds New customers only in the coupon’s Usage restriction area. Its documented definition is that customers are new when they have not yet completed an order on the site. A first order that is still processing therefore remains eligible under that definition.
The extension also documents an option to check guest orders against existing orders. Its guidance recommends disabling guest checkout for the most reliable account-based check, or explicitly enabling the guest-order checking setting if you intend to allow guests.
WooCommerce Smart Coupons
Smart Coupons documents a For new customers? option for a new-customer coupon. Its guide says that, for guest shoppers, prior orders are checked against the billing email entered at checkout. This is a Smart Coupons mechanism; do not assume another extension uses the same matching method.

Understand guest-checkout eligibility
Guest checkout means there may be no persistent customer account to inspect. The result depends on the extension and its configured matching rule:
| Setup | Documented eligibility behavior | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Coupon Restrictions with account-focused checking | New status is based on whether the customer has completed an order. | Disable guest checkout for the most reliable account-based check. |
| Coupon Restrictions with guest-order checking enabled | The extension can check guest orders against existing orders. | Enable that setting and verify how your installed version matches records. |
| Smart Coupons | Prior guest orders are checked against the billing email entered at checkout. | Explain this email-based rule in your offer terms and test reused billing addresses. |
Because these checks differ, state the selected extension’s rule in your internal launch notes and test both logged-in and guest scenarios before promoting the offer.
Choose how the discount is redeemed
Customer-entered coupon code
In the core workflow, shoppers enter the code at cart or checkout. WooCommerce core does not automatically apply coupons, so include the exact code and redemption conditions in your promotion.
Automatically applied first-order coupon
Smart Coupons documents optional auto-application for a new-customer coupon. This removes manual code entry, but eligibility still depends on the extension’s new-customer and guest-order checks. Confirm that the discount appears only when the configured conditions are met.
Coupon sent after the first order
A post-purchase email is a different offer. AutomateWoo documents a workflow that triggers when a first order is completed and sends a coupon for a future purchase. It does not discount the order that triggered the workflow. Use this pattern when the goal is repeat purchase rather than acquisition-order savings.

Run these checks on the live configuration or a safe staging copy before publicizing the code:
- Use an account with no completed orders and confirm the intended discount is accepted.
- Use an account that has completed an order and confirm it is rejected.
- If guest checkout is enabled, retry with a billing email that appears on a previous guest order and verify the selected extension’s documented behavior.
- Confirm the expiry date blocks redemption after the specified time.
- Try combining the code with another coupon if stacking should be prohibited.
- Reach the overall coupon cap and confirm further redemptions are blocked.
- Redeem once, then attempt a second redemption by the same user to verify the per-user limit.
- If using auto-application, check that the coupon appears only for eligible shoppers.
- If using an AutomateWoo follow-up, complete a qualifying order and verify that the email coupon is issued for a later purchase, not retroactively applied.
Which setup fits your goal?
| Goal | Recommended configuration | Key caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Discount an eligible shopper’s first order with manual entry | Core coupon plus Coupon Restrictions or Smart Coupons new-customer control. | Guest identification follows the selected extension’s rules. |
| Remove code entry for eligible first-time shoppers | Smart Coupons new-customer coupon with its auto-application option. | Core WooCommerce does not provide auto-application. |
| Encourage a second purchase after the first order | AutomateWoo workflow triggered by a completed first order and an emailed coupon. | The email coupon applies to a future order. |
| Run a general promotional coupon without first-order qualification | Core WooCommerce coupon settings alone. | No built-in first-customer-only filter is provided by the cited core documentation. |
Version and configuration note
Admin labels, extension behavior, compatibility, and terms can change. Confirm the exact controls in the versions installed on your store, especially guest-order matching and automatic application, before publishing the offer.
