The display flashes, and a thumbnail with screenshot tools appears. If your Galaxy has a physical Home button, use Power + Home instead. From there you can crop, draw, tag, share, or capture a scrolling page.
This guide covers the button shortcut, no-button gestures, S Pen and voice alternatives, long screenshots, storage locations, model-specific limitations, and fixes when capture does not work.
The quickest method: Power/Side + Volume Down
- Open the screen you want to save.
- Press the Power/Side button and Volume Down at the same time.
- Release both buttons immediately. Holding them too long can trigger a different power or volume action.
- Wait for the flash and screenshot thumbnail or toolbar.
The exact button position differs between Galaxy models. A case that fits tightly around either key can also prevent both buttons from registering together. On older Galaxy phones with a physical Home button, press Power and Home simultaneously instead.
What appears after capture
Samsung’s screenshot toolbar can offer Scroll capture, Draw, Crop, Add tag, and Share. Tap the thumbnail if you need to edit or send the image immediately; otherwise it is saved automatically.

Take a screenshot without pressing the buttons
Use Palm swipe to capture
- Open Settings.
- Look for Palm swipe to capture, commonly under Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Turn the option on.
- Place the edge of your hand against one side of the display and swipe horizontally across it.
The gesture is optional and not present on every Galaxy model. Samsung also notes that palm swipe is unavailable while the keyboard is showing. If the swipe does nothing, first confirm the setting is enabled, then try with the keyboard dismissed and your hand’s edge contacting the glass rather than a flat palm.
Use an S Pen
On a compatible S Pen Galaxy device, open Air Command and choose Screen Write. The phone captures the current display and opens annotation tools so you can write or mark it before saving or sharing. Screen Write and the available Air Command actions depend on the device and its software.
Use Bixby or Google Assistant
Samsung lists voice commands through Bixby or Google Assistant as another option. The exact phrase, assistant settings, and availability vary by model, region, software version, and which assistant you have configured. If the assistant does not respond, verify that voice activation is enabled and try the button or palm-swipe method instead.

Capture an entire webpage with Scroll capture
Scroll capture creates one tall screenshot from content that continues below the visible screen. It works only when the app exposes a compatible, scrollable page; it is not a way to combine unrelated screens.

Turn on the screenshot toolbar
- Open Settings.
- Go to Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder.
- Enable Show toolbar after capturing.
Labels and menu placement can differ on your Galaxy. Use Settings search for “screenshot” if the path is named differently.
Make the long capture
- Open the webpage or other long content and position it at the starting point.
- Take a normal screenshot with Power/Side + Volume Down, Palm swipe, S Pen, or another supported method.
- When the toolbar appears, tap Scroll capture.
- Keep tapping, or press and hold the scroll-capture icon, until the screenshot contains the required content.
- Stop when you reach the end, then let the phone save the result to Gallery.
The scroll control extends the image a section at a time. Review the final image before sharing, because stopping early omits content and continuing too far adds material you may not need.

Why Scroll capture may be missing
- The current page does not scroll or the app does not expose compatible content.
- The screenshot toolbar is disabled.
- The app or screen blocks screenshots for privacy, security, or copyright reasons.
- Your model, carrier, region, or software version uses a different menu or does not include the feature.
Find, edit, tag, and share screenshots
Where Galaxy saves screenshots
Screenshots are saved automatically in Gallery. Samsung’s regional instructions direct users to Gallery > Albums > Screenshots. You can also browse to My Files > Images. If you do not see the image immediately, open the Screenshots album rather than relying only on the most-recent view.
Edit from the toolbar
Tap the screenshot thumbnail or open it from Gallery. Depending on your model, the toolbar lets you crop unwanted edges, draw annotations, add a tag, and share the image. Cropping before sharing is useful for removing unrelated notifications or personal information visible at the top of the screen.
Share or organize later
Use Gallery’s Share action to send the file to an app or contact. Add a tag when you need to find a group of screenshots later. For sensitive captures, check the image at full size before sharing: notification previews, account names, addresses, and other private details may be present even when they are small on the phone.

When screenshots fail: symptoms and fixes
Nothing happens after pressing the keys
- Press Power/Side and Volume Down simultaneously, then release immediately.
- Remove or loosen a case that obstructs either button.
- On a physical-Home model, use Power + Home rather than Volume Down.
- Try Palm swipe or the S Pen method to determine whether the problem is the keys or the screen’s screenshot policy.
Palm swipe is not working
- Confirm Palm swipe to capture is enabled in Settings.
- Dismiss the on-screen keyboard; Samsung says the gesture is unavailable while it is showing.
- Swipe with the edge of your hand across the display.
- Check whether your model supports the gesture. Feature availability varies by model and software.
The toolbar or Scroll capture icon is absent
- Enable Show toolbar after capturing under Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder.
- Make sure the content extends beyond one screen and can actually scroll.
- Try a normal browser page. Some apps and protected screens do not provide compatible scrolling or block screenshots.
The phone refuses to capture a particular screen
Some apps and screens deliberately prevent screenshots because of privacy, security, or copyright controls. A blank or blocked result in one app does not necessarily indicate a hardware fault. Respect the app’s restrictions; switching to another capture method will not bypass a policy enforced by the screen.
Menus do not match these instructions
Samsung changes labels and placement across Galaxy models, regions, carriers, and software versions. Search Settings for screenshot, palm swipe, or screen recorder, and check the model-specific manual when a feature is not listed.
Practical tips for cleaner captures
- Scroll to the exact starting position before taking a long capture.
- Close menus, keyboards, and transient notifications that you do not want included.
- Use Crop or Draw from the toolbar to emphasize the relevant area before sharing.
- Review long screenshots for missing sections or accidental extra scrolling.
- Remove personal details before posting a screenshot publicly.

Which Galaxy method should you use?
Use Power/Side + Volume Down for a normal, one-screen image. Enable Palm swipe when you want a button-free gesture, choose Scroll capture for a compatible page longer than the display, and use S Pen or voice control when your model supports them. If one screen blocks capture, that is usually an app or content restriction rather than a shortcut problem.
