To make a WooCommerce store members-only, use WooCommerce Memberships to decide how people qualify, create a membership plan, connect it to a product or another access method, and set rules for what members can see. Add WooCommerce Subscriptions only if access should renew with recurring charges. The key distinction: restricting a product page is separate from restricting who can buy a product.
Choose how people become members
WooCommerce Memberships manages access rules; it does not introduce a special membership product type. A plan can be granted when a customer buys an ordinary WooCommerce product, when someone registers, or when an administrator assigns access manually. - Paid, self-serve access: Create a product that grants the membership plan when purchased.
- Free registration: Grant access through account registration.
- Curated access: Assign membership to individual customers manually.
Install Memberships and create a plan
- Purchase and download the WooCommerce Memberships extension, then in your WordPress dashboard go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, upload the ZIP file, and install and activate it.
- Open WooCommerce > Memberships > Membership Plans and create a plan.
- Choose the access method and connect the plan to the product or products that grant it, if you are using purchase-based enrollment.
- Set the membership term: unlimited, a specified duration, or a fixed start and end date. For purchase-based plans, access is created after the qualifying order is paid.
WooCommerce’s quick-start documentation assumes that the content you intend to protect already exists. See the Memberships setup guide for the extension’s setup and plan workflow.
Decide whether membership expires or renews
Memberships can set access duration and expiration, but that alone does not charge a recurring fee. If members should be billed automatically on a recurring schedule, add WooCommerce Subscriptions and integrate it with Memberships. Without Subscriptions, select an unlimited term or a fixed duration according to the access you want to grant. Memberships documentation · Memberships integrations

Set rules for member-only content
In the plan’s Restrict Content settings, choose the pages, posts, custom post types, taxonomies, or content types members may access. You can grant access immediately or delay it after membership begins; delayed access is content dripping. Content without an applicable restriction rule remains public. Memberships documentation
By default, a restriction applies to the whole post or page. If only part of an article should be members-only, configure excerpts or use Memberships shortcodes to protect a section rather than applying a whole-page restriction. Memberships FAQ

Choose what non-members can see and do
Memberships lets you control the visitor experience for restricted content. The restriction mode affects direct visits, excerpts, redirects, and whether restricted products appear in the shop catalog. Select a mode deliberately: hiding the full content is not the same as displaying a teaser that invites visitors to join. Content restriction settings · Restriction modes and visibility
- Hide completely: Restricted content is inaccessible to non-members; a direct visit returns a 404.
- Show an excerpt: Visitors can see an excerpt, not the protected full content. WooCommerce says excerpts can be used with “Hide content only” or “Redirect to page” when excerpt indexing is desired.
- Redirect to a page: Send visitors to an explanatory page that describes the membership or next step.
Do not treat excerpt visibility as public access to the protected material: the full content remains restricted. Configure shop-catalog visibility separately if you also want restricted products removed from listings.

Restrict product viewing separately from purchasing
Product rules are separate from rules for pages and posts. You can restrict a product’s viewing, which also prevents non-members from purchasing it, or restrict purchase only, leaving its product page publicly visible. Configure benefits and explain access
A plan can offer product discounts. The member area can list content and products a member is entitled to, discounts, and notes. Customize restricted-content notices so visitors know whether they need to join or sign in, and explain what membership provides. Memberships documentation

Protect member downloads, not just pages
A restricted page does not automatically secure a downloadable file’s direct URL. WooCommerce says Memberships does not specifically restrict direct file URLs; someone who obtains and shares a URL may bypass a page-level restriction because the file access is separate from ordinary page visibility. To limit access, add the file to a downloadable WooCommerce product and restrict that product. If the membership uses Subscriptions, WooCommerce also recommends Subscription Downloads. Check compatibility notes against your store
The Memberships overview states that Cart and Checkout blocks are compatible with the extension as of WooCommerce 8.3. Because compatibility can change with software updates and store configuration, check the current documentation and your own setup before relying on that version-scoped note. Memberships overview
